Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus in the Nineteenth Century and After The present volume is based on Dr. Weinel's Jesus im 19. Jahrhundert which has already had an exceptionally large circulation. The whole has been revised and brought up to date, and its scope has been widened by the consideration of English, American, and French life and thought, and of one Italian thinker, Mazzini. It has now, therefore, a reference to almost the whole sphere of western civilisation. The plan of the volume is largely, and what is best in it entirely, due to Dr. Weinel. The English form - often an adaptation - given to the revised and enlarged German original is due to me, as is also the Introduction, and, with the exception of the portions treating of Renan and Oscar Wilde, everything that is said with reference to Mazzini, and the English, American, and French thinkers and the problems raised by them. Though the work, as its title implies, is predominantly historical, even the most cursory perusal of it will reveal that a definite attitude towards the religious and social questions of our time is here advocated. In contrast with the tendency of that modern mysticism, orthodox and unorthodox, which finds its intellectual support in Ecclesiastical Dogma, Absolute Idealism, or Neutral Monism, the personal and the historical are here regarded as fundamental in Reality and vital in Religion. All mysticism is not thereby denied, for in the relation of person to person thought is faced with something indefinable, something ultimate, something mystical. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in the Nineteenth Century From God; the other is at once formal and material, pro A csode from man, and is of the earth. What is achieved through the Spirit may be done by one church, but is the common possession and glory of all the Churches what is performed in the weakness and imperfection of the human conditions is, and remains, the church's own, evidence of the incomplete subordination of the society on earth to the Lord in heaven. The extraordinary thing is, not that the Churches have so often fatally erred and disastrously failed in duty, but that they have been able, in spite of their errors and failures, so far to obey the Christ, and to render so much service to man. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ's Kingdom and Church in the Nineteenth Century "Kingdom of God"; "Kingdom of Heaven"; "Church;" "World." Leaving over for a time the consideration of the last named, what, we may ask, are the data furnished by the New Testament for enabling us to discriminate between these terms? What is the meaning, and what the precise relation to each other, of the things or ideas signified by the terms in question? Let the familiar facts be rapidly summarised once more. Christ's favourite expression is "Kingdom." In the Gospels it occurs some hundred and twelve times, and for the most part as Christ's own word. Sometimes He speaks simply of "My Kingdom," but more frequently we have the fuller expression, "Kingdom of God" or "Kingdom of Heaven." Because we need a brief history. Richardson's great work, Memoirs of A. Campbell, a classic of its kind, and a book with a permanent place in literature, has pages. The masses will not read it because of its size. Only the preacher and teacher, and not all of them, will read it. Moore's Comprehensive History of the Disciples of Christ, of one volume, has 860 pages, and is therefore subject to the same objections. The demand is for a book not half so large as these, and yet sufficiently large to give a clear conception of this Resto ration movement.
