Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus Christ the Proof of Christianity Whatever there was in the East worthy of perpetuation continues. But it is modified and exalted, and enters into higher forms as the result of the contact of Grecian thought. The empire of Alexander falls in pieces at his death. But the mighty fragments are all Grecian. They are under Greek rulers. They are essentially Greek states. His far-reaching statesmanship had builded better than he knew. We need not trace their fortunes. They only now concern us, in so far as they helped to bring in the fulness of time and to prepare for the dispensation of the Gospel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations on the History and Evidences of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ But as the resurrection's having been fully proved to the apostles, though absolutely necessary, yet is not of itself sufficient to authorize at this time and establish the faith of a Christian, I imagined, that what I had alreadywritten would be imperfect, at least, if not al together useless, unless I added some arguments and reasons'i had'to offer, to 'induce us, who live at the distance of seventeen hundred years from the date of that miraculous event, 'to believe that Christ is risen from the dead. These reasons, therefore, I have thought proper to subjoin under two heads, viz thetestimony of the chosen Witnesses of the Resurrection recorded in-tlie Scriptures, and the Existence of the Christian Religion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christianity of Christ But, alas, the roots of the tree penetrated to the fountain, and the whole was tainted, and now the spring is neglected and its waters forsaken. So men have often spoiled the truth as it is in Jesus by attempting to improve it. Instead of accepting it as it is in all its native plainness, undoctored and un alloyed, they have sought to subtract from it here and add to it there, and thus have either robbed it of its strength and glory, or turned thirsty souls from it altogether. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of the Person of Jesus Christ That there is a main stream, that the authors of the New Testament are eventually one in their view of Christ, with a unity which is powerful enough to absorb and subdue their differences Of interpretation, is not indeed to be lightheartedly assumed. But it is rendered ex tremely probable by the simple experimental fact that the Church has always found it possible to nourish her faith in the Redeemer from every part of the apostolic writings. Further, this natural presumption is vindicated by a closer scrutiny of the facts. Two certainties are shared in common by all New Testament writers: First, that the life and consciousness of Jesus was in form com pletely human; second, that this historic life, apprehended as instinct with the powers of redemption, is one with the life of God Himself. In Christ they find God personally present for our salvation from sin and death. Yet in spite or rather because of this basal agreement it is the more impressive to contemplate the sovereign freedom with which they surveyed Christ, telling what they saw in books which have been quite justly described as literature, not dogma. Each looked at Jesus with his own eyes; each Spoke out of his own mind; and to force their words about Him into a mechanical and external harmony is simply to misconceive the genius of Christian faith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus Christ and the Christian Character When one turns with this new problem to the Gospels, he discovers with fresh surprise the ex traordinary richness and variety of the teaching of Jesus. Each period in history goes with its question to the simple record, and finds an an swer which seems written to meet the special problem of the time. In an age of theology the Gospels were a source of theological doctrine; in an age of ecclesiasticism they fortified the Church; in an age of emotionalism they kindled the flame of piety. The same adaptability is now discovered once more by the age of the Social Question. As others have found in the teaching of Jesus the key Of doctrine or organization or religious experience, so there is now delivered by the same teaching to the mind of the present age a key of the Social Question. Remote from the condition of the modern world as was the life of Jesus, and pri marily directed as was his teaching, not to social but to spiritual ends, he has much to say of social duty. His ethics are not individualist, atomic, a doctrine of the single soul; but organic, social, a doctrine Of the common life. There are abundant promises which speak of the kingdoms of the world becoming the kingdoms of Christ - promises that the earth shall be full Of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. He must reign until he hath put all enemies under his feet. These glorious events shine ever before us - the Church's hope and joy and strength. From age to age the conviction abides that as the Almighty Father made the world, as the Son of God redeemed it, so assuredly the Holy Ghost is come to regenerate the world and to fill it with the glory Of God. Book excerpt: In Did Jesus Exist? historian and Bible expert Bart Ehrman confronts the question, "Did Jesus exist at all?" Ehrman vigorously defends the historical Jesus, identifies the most historically reliable sources for best understanding Jesus’ mission and message, and offers a compelling portrait of the person at the heart of the Christian tradition. Known as a master explainer with deep knowledge of the field, Bart Ehrman methodically demolishes both the scholarly and popular “mythicist” arguments against the existence of Jesus. Marshaling evidence from within the Bible and the wider historical record of the ancient world, Ehrman tackles the key issues that surround the mythologies associated with Jesus and the early Christian movement. In Did Jesus Exist?: The Historical Argument for Jesus of Nazareth, Ehrman establishes the criterion for any genuine historical investigation and provides a robust defense of the methods required to discover the Jesus of history.
