Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus Christ the Divine Man, His Life and Times If any apology be needed for adding another to the various lives of Christ already before the public, it may be well to state how far this little book occupies any independent ground of its own. The object of the writer has been to make some small contribution to the moral and spiritual history of the Life of lives, and this in some especial relation to missionary work and the contact of Christianity with non-Christian religions. "The ethical," as Prof Kuenen well says, "is the universal human." Ethical and spiritual sequences of cause and effect have been especially before the writers mind. The Gospel history is "a history, which in every part of it," as Weiss says, "must be considered in the light of Him who transcends all history." The superhistorical relations of the historical life have been touched upon in some of their bearings upon the past, present, and future of Christianity. Even Keim, from whose point of view the present writer wholly differs, while gladly acknowledging his great ability and learning, and not infrequent reverence of tone and enthusiasm of humanity, affirms of Christ's life that it is "bounded at its circumference by the human limitations of His age, in its centre exalted above all." Such language may imply nothing but hero worship, but it is at all events a recognition of the incomparable grandeur of Christ's life and character. While the moral and spiritual aspects of the Life have been placed in the foreground, every effort has been made to present the physical and social environment briefly, yet accurately, in the light of modern research. In this connection the archaeological and geographical labours of the Palestine Exploration Society have been largely drawn upon, and the most recent records of travel, especially those of Captain Conder, Mr. Lawrence Oliphant, and Dr. Selah Merrill. Upon the whole, the greatest obligations are due to Dr. Edersheim His wealth of Rabbinical lore, his great theological erudition, his deep sympathy with Israel, springing from the strongest of all sources, the fountain of blood relationship, and his true spirituality of touch, place his work, in the writers estimate, at the head of all the contemporary literature of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walks With Jesus, or Days of the Son of Man His book of Days in the life of the Son of Man begins with the divine Birth in Bethlehem, and it ends with the divine Ascension from Olivet. But it only takes here and there one of the more human and home-like scenes in the great biography, and tries to make it clear for modern eyes to see. No attempt has been made to write a connected life of Jesus, or to weave into consecutive order the chief events of the Gospel story. Very little exposition has been given of the meaning of the gracious words of Jesus, or of the mystery of his mighty works. We have only tried to put ourselves in the place of thoughtful men, who were looking for the Messiah in his day, and who wondered and wished to know whether Jesus of Nazareth were he that should come. With no theory to defend, no prejudices to gratify, further than the one desire to hear what truth will say from sacred lips, and what love will do with human hands, we have tried to fix a calm and steady gaze upon that wonderful Galilean teacher, as he was seen by the men of his time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The God-Man, or the Life and Works of Jesus, the Christ and Son of God: A Poem in Fifteen Parts By asserting, argumentatively as well as historically, in the following, necessarily, elaborate and extensive Poem, that Jesus is the Christ, the God-sent (messiah) and God and Men-attested Son of God, the argument centering first in the proofs of His divine authority and power to perform Miracles, and extending to the far reaching proofs of His divine character as the only acceptable, appreciated and fully recognized Mediator between God and men, He being, therefore, the exclusive divine Saviour of men who are His followers the undersigned claims to present distinctively, essen tially (with many of the foremost Biblical proof-texts, quotations from and references to various authors and their works, in foot-notes), the scriptural and rational answers, not only in regard to some philosophical and scientific problems involved, but also to some of the so-called burning questions of all times in the Christian era, even from the beginning, and, especially, of this our present time and age, focused in the undisguised sceptic questions, asking: What of Jesus Christ, His Life, Miracles, Doctrines and Teachings, as presented in the New Testament? That my work, in its greatly epitomized, and its fluent poetical form and expression, its sublimity and spirituality of its subject-matter from an orthodox Christian point of View, may find acceptance and many readers, and redound to the glory of God and His Christ, is my most Sincere desire. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Incarnate Saviour: A Life of Jesus Christ We endeavour to illustrate three main propositions in the following pages. First, Jesus Christ was God and man in two distinct natures and one person. His humanity was true and proper, but through it we see continually gleams of the Godhead. As the Apostle John says in the preface to his Gospel, The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld Hz'sglory. This glory, as we understand the words, was not merely beheld by the apostle in such great and signal manifestations as the transfiguration, the resurrection, and the ascension, - it was beheld more or less clearly even in the lowly actions and the ordinary tenor of His common life and speech. For example, we are told that after one of His miracles the disciples put the question, What manner of man is this? That He was a man they never doubted, yet ever and anon there was something which suggested He was more. The look in His face, the tone in His voice, the work of His hands, constantly startled them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Devotional Life of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ It has been necessary, for these ends, to consider in some detail all which the Gospel tells us of the Divine Infancy, Childhood, and Youth, and also all which it tells us of the closing scenes of the Divine life. But it has been thought sufficient to summarise the events of the Ministry, dwelling only on such features Of it as seemed necessary to the main pur pose of the work. This has been done partly for the sake of reducing the size Of the book, and partly in order to present in fewer traits, and therefore more easily grasped at one view, what IS Intended to be a Portrait rather than a Biography. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Man Called Jesus IT is a matter of prime importance that the Christian should gain as true and deep an insight as he possibly can into the Character of Him whom he professes to adore and serve. The goal of the Christian life is the attainment of Christlikeness. But, if we are to try to be like Christ, we must know what He was like. Nay further, if we are to gain a true knowledge of God, we must learn to know Him through the Man who alone fully declares Him. We apprehend the Character of God, truly, only to the extent to which we have apprehended the Character of Jesus Christ. But though the witness of the Gospels has been before the world for eighteen centuries, it will hardly be seriously questioned by any thoughtful mind that we are still very far indeed from a true and thorough apprehension of Him whose life and teaching they so simply and graphically record. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ Even in the period next after this violent stifling, this mysterious stillness of the new Spirit in the world lasts on until it irresistibly penetrates it ever more strongly, and then soon both Jews and heathens say enough of it, when they had already lost the opportunity of being able to know most accurately about Christ. Thus Flavius Josephus is the only non-christian historian of the first century we possess who speaks of Christ. In the first indeed of his two great works - the history of the Jewish War - he did not speak of Him, he had no need in respect of the principal subject of it. But we cannot see how he, in the Antiquities, should have neglected to speak, however briefly, of Christ and His followers; as there he mentions much far less important, and that work professes to give a general history of the people, according to all its aims, various divisions, and manifold crises. Had he also in this work said nothing of Christianity, that could only be explained from a want of clear views on the subjects which had so completely fettered him, that he preferred to be silent on a matter so imperfectly known to him. He had certainly, when he wrote his work for the roman-greek world, a secret horror of every thing Messianic, and Christianity must have appeared to him, as to all the Jews of his views, something incomprehensible; and' besides, as it was felt how much this last division had injured the Jews, it must have been a subject disagree able and repugnant. But these grounds seem insuflicient for his entirely overlooking it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Widely proclaimed a classic work of Christian faith, Life of Christ has been hailed as the most eloquent of Fulton J. Sheen's many books. The fruit of many years of reflection, prayer, and research, it is a dramatic and moving recounting of the birth, life, Crucifixion, and Resurrection of Christ, and a passionate portrait of the God-Man, the teacher, the healer, and, most of all, the Savior, whose promise has sustained humanity for two millenia. With his customary insight and reverence, Sheen interprets the Scripture and describes Christ not only in historical perspective but also in exciting and contemporary terms -- seeing in Christ's life both modern parallels and timeless lessons. His thoughtful, probing analysis provides new insight into well-known Gospel events. An appealing blend of philosophy, history, and biblical exegesis, from the best-known and most-loved American Catholic leader of the twentieth century, Life of Christ has long been a source of inspiration and guidance. For those seeking to better understand the message of Jesus Christ, this vivid retelling of the greatest story ever lived is a must-read.
