Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible gives us the history of the human experience with God: The triumphs, the failures, the redemptions, and ultimately, the enduring love of the Father for His Creation. Nowhere is this love seen more clearly than through the life of Jesus Christ. In this foundational message by the best-selling author of When Heaven Invades Earth, Bill Johnson shares the importance of Jesus in understanding God's love for humankind. Modern interpretations and theology point to God as being angry, vengeful, and genocidal, attributing to Him some of the very worst aspects of the human condition. The Old Testament is an incomplete picture, as God portrayed through Jesus is a very different God indeed. In Jesus Christ is Perfect Theology, Bill Johnson reveals how Jesus completes the picture of God presented in the Bible, and provides to us the measure by which we should judge all things.

Book excerpt: In this important study Hays argues against the mainstream that any attempt to account for the nature and method of Paul's theological language must first reckon with the centrality of narrative elements in his thought. Through an in-depth investigation of Galatians 3:1-4:11, Hays shows that the framework of Paul's thought is neither a system of doctrines nor his personal religious experience but the "sacred story" of Jesus Christ.

Book excerpt: We live in an age of skepticism. Our society places such faith in empirical reason, historical progress, and heartfelt emotion that it’s easy to wonder: Why should anyone believe in Christianity? What role can faith and religion play in our modern lives? In this thoughtful and inspiring new book, pastor and New York Times bestselling author Timothy Keller invites skeptics to consider that Christianity is more relevant now than ever. As human beings, we cannot live without meaning, satisfaction, freedom, identity, justice, and hope. Christianity provides us with unsurpassed resources to meet these needs. Written for both the ardent believer and the skeptic, Making Sense of God shines a light on the profound value and importance of Christianity in our lives.

Book excerpt: Why is God's beauty often absent from our theology? Rarely do theologians take up the theme of God's beauty—even more rarely do they consider how God's beauty should shape the task of theology itself. But the psalmist says that the heart of the believer's desire is to behold the beauty of the Lord. In The Beauty of the Lord, Jonathan King restores aesthetics as not merely a valid lens for theological reflection, but an essential one. Jesus, our incarnate Redeemer, displays the Triune God's beauty in his actions and person, from creation to final consummation. How can and should theology better reflect this unveiled beauty? The Beauty of the Lord is a renewal of a truly aesthetic theology and a properly theological aesthetics.

Book excerpt: Liberal attacks on the doctrine of the divinity of Christ have led evangelicals to rightly affirm the centrality of Jesus's divine nature for his person and work. At times, however, this defense of orthodoxy has led some to neglect Christ's full humanity. To counteract this oversight, theologian Bruce Ware takes readers back to the biblical text, where we meet a profoundly human Jesus who struggled with many of the same difficulties and limitations we face today. Like us, he grew in faith and wisdom, tested by every temptation common to man. And like us, he too received power for godliness through the Holy Spirit, and thus serves not only as the divine Lord to be worshiped, but also the supreme Human to be followed.

Book excerpt: The gospel of Jesus Christ is not one theory of the world’s origin and purpose standing behind or alongside other competing viewpoints. Neither is it one of many components of the Christian religion. It is the central purpose, heartbeat, and jewel of the entire universe. It is the power of God Almighty. It is the set of glasses we must wear to rightly understand all of God’s Word and all of God’s world. Whether we acknowledge it or not, Jesus Christ is the Lord, Savior, and Treasure. This gospel of Jesus Christ is God’s grace for individuals, and God’s grace for all of creation. John Kuyper Liberty explains from Scripture that the gospel transforms how we understand and relate to God and his revelation (upward theology), how we understand and relate to ourselves and other Christians (inward theology), and how we understand and relate to God’s broader creation, our communities, our cultures, and those who are not Christians (outward theology). This monumental resource written for all people includes chapter titles like The Good News of God’s Word, Gospel Worship, Gospel Joy, The Gospel and Money, The Gospel-Centered Home, The Gospel and Work, and Gospel Society. Jesus Christ, by his perfect life, bloody cross, resurrection in power, and ascension into Kingship, is reconciling all things to himself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purchase one of 1st World Library's Classic Books and help support our free internet library of downloadable eBooks. Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - Science is a systematic presentation of truth. Theology is the most important of all sciences. It is the science that treats of God and of man in his relation to God. It is a systematic presentation of revealed truth. As the basis of Astronomy is the universe of worlds revealed by the telescope, and as the basis of Geology is the crust of the earth, so the basis of Theology is the Divine revelation found in the Holy Scriptures. The Theology of Entire Sanctification, therefore, is a systematic presentation of the doctrine of entire sanctification as derived from the written word of God. Such a presentation we hope - with the help of the Holy Spirit, which we here and now earnestly invoke - to attempt to give in this book. May God bless the endeavor, and overrule our human weakness, to the glory of His Name. Amen. It is a lamentable fact that there is a large class of Christians to whom the subject of entire sanctification is a matter of indifference. They hope, with or without sufficient reason, that their sins are forgiven. They propose to live moral and useful lives, and trust, again with or without sufficient reason, that they will go to heaven when they die.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following book is the author's seminal work on his Christian faith. The author of this work happens to be John Brown of Wamphray. He served as the minister of the parish of Wamphray in Annandale and for many years he seems to have been quietly engaged in his pastoral duties, in which he must have been very efficient, for his name still lives in the district in affectionate remembrance. After the restoration he was not only compelled by the acts of Parliament of 1662 to leave his charge, but he was one of a few ministers who were arrested and banished, owing to the ability and earnestness with which they had opposed the arbitrary conduct of the king in the affairs of the church. On 6 November 1662 he was sentenced to be kept a close prisoner in the Tolbooth of Edinburgh, his crime being that he had called some ministers 'false knaves' for keeping synod with the archbishop. The state of the prison causing his health to break down, he was banished 11 December from the king's dominions, and ordered not to return on pain of death.
