Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus Christ in the Talmud, Midrash, Zohar, and the Liturgy of the Synagogue The attractive subject of Heir Laible's recently published essay ("Jesus Christus im Thalmud") leads me to think that the passages on which he bases his work, and the comments which he makes upon them, cannot be without interest for the English reader, even though the conclusions which he reaches may not on all occasions appear entitled to equally full assent. On my suggesting this to Dr Hermann L. Strack of Berlin (at whose suggestion, as will be seen from the preface to the German edition, Herr Laible undertook the task) I received permission to make use of a large number of spare printed copies of the original texts (numbers I - xxiv; pages 5 - 19) which had been edited by Dr Gustaf H. Dalman of Leipzig. In order to secure in each case the best available (unexpurgated) text, the following editions were used by him: 1. Palestinian Talmud, Venice, 1523 - 4. 2. Babylonian Talmud, Venice. B'rakhoth, Shabbath, Sota, Gittin, Sanhedrin, 'Aboda zara, 1520; Chagigah, 1521; Soph'rim, 1522; Aboth, 1526; 'Erubin, Kallah, J'bamoth, 1528. Variants in the MSS. used by Rabbinovicz (Dikduke Soph'rim, or Variae Lectiones in Mischnam et in Talmud Babylonicum, Munich, 1867 - 1886) are indicated thus: M = the Munich, 0 = the Oxford, Fl = the Florence, K= the Karlsruhe MS. For the treatises not dealt with by Rabbinovicz, 'En Ja'akob, venice, 1546, was specially used. 3. Tosephta, Zuckermandel, Pasewalk, 1880. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus Christ in the Talmud, Midrash, Zohar, and the Liturgy of the Synagogue: Texts and Translations Hereby, as well as by the introduction of other matte: contributed by Dr Dalman and Herr Laible, and incorporated by me with the body of the essay, or appended in the form of foot-notes, the value of this edition of the work is much enhanced. It has been my aim throughout to render the German as closely as regard for English idiom would permit. At the same time I have ventured to deviate from this rule (a) in dealing with the earlier pages of the essay, which appeared to me to be capable With advantage of some con densation for the English reader, and (b) very occasionally, in modifying expressions used by the Talmud in reference to our Blessed Lord. It may perhaps be considered that I have not gone quite far enough in this latter respect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Jesus in the Talmud by : Bernhard Pick
Download or read book Jesus in the Talmud written by Bernhard Pick and published by . This book was released on 1913 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Scattered throughout the Talmud, the founding document of rabbinic Judaism in late antiquity, can be found quite a few references to Jesus--and they're not flattering. In this lucid, richly detailed, and accessible book, Peter Sch fer examines how the rabbis of the Talmud read, understood, and used the New Testament Jesus narrative to assert, ultimately, Judaism's superiority over Christianity. The Talmudic stories make fun of Jesus' birth from a virgin, fervently contest his claim to be the Messiah and Son of God, and maintain that he was rightfully executed as a blasphemer and idolater. They subvert the Christian idea of Jesus' resurrection and insist he got the punishment he deserved in hell - -and that a similar fate awaits his followers. Sch fer contends that these stories betray a remarkable familiarity with the Gospels - especially Matthew and John - and represent a deliberate and sophisticated anti-Christian polemic that parodies the New Testament narratives. He carefully distinguishes between Babylonian and Palestinian sources, arguing that the rabbis' proud and self-confident countermessage to that of the evangelists was possible only in the unique historical setting of Persian Babylonia, in a Jewish community that lived in relative freedom. The same could not be said of Roman and Byzantine Palestine, where the Christians aggressively consolidated their political power and the Jews therefore suffered." -- Book jacket.
Download or read book Jesus the Nazarene written by A. Jordan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-04-05 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historical Jesus is as elusive as he is appealing. Everyone wants to find who the man really was. Scholars pour over the pages of the New Testament and apocryphal literature for any clue about his true identity. People have looked in all places for answers—accept one. The Talmud contains a powerful counter-narrative to the Christian and scholarly consensus about Jesus. Did Jesus live in the first century BCE? Was he the son of a Roman soldier? Did he perform magic? Why was he executed? These are all questions that the Talmud answers, pointing us closer to knowing who the historical Jesus was and when he lived. Within these pages, you will find a clear presentation of the Talmud’s narrative and some of the implications of this narrative for our understanding of Jesus as a Jewish man from Greco-Roman Palestine.

Book Synopsis Jesus and the Temple by : Simon J. Joseph
Download or read book Jesus and the Temple written by Simon J. Joseph and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-08 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Jesus specialists agree that the Temple incident led directly to Jesus' arrest, but the precise relationship between Jesus and the Temple's administration remains unclear. Jesus and the Temple examines this relationship, exploring the reinterpretation of Torah observance and traditional Temple practices that are widely considered central components of the early Jesus movement. Challenging a growing tendency in contemporary scholarship to assume that the earliest Christians had an almost uniformly positive view of the Temple's sacrificial system, Simon J. Joseph addresses the ambiguous, inconsistent, and contradictory views on sacrifice and the Temple in the New Testament. This volume fills a significant gap in the literature on sacrifice in Jewish Christianity. It introduces a new hypothesis positing Jesus' enactment of a program of radically nonviolent eschatological restoration, an orientation that produced Jesus' conflicts with his contemporaries and inspired the first attributions of sacrificial language to his death.
Book Synopsis A Social History of Christian Origins by : Simon J. Joseph
Download or read book A Social History of Christian Origins written by Simon J. Joseph and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Social History of Christian Origins explores how the theme of the Jewish rejection of Jesus – embedded in Paul’s letters and the New Testament Gospels – represents the ethnic, social, cultural, and theological conflicts that facilitated the construction of Christian identity. Readers of this book will gain a thorough understanding of how a central theme of early Christianity – the Jewish rejection of Jesus – facilitated the emergence of Christian anti-Judaism as well as the complex and multi-faceted representations of Jesus in the Gospels of the New Testament. This study systematically analyses the theme of social rejection in the Jesus tradition by surveying its historical and chronological development. Employing the social-psychological study of social rejection, social identity theory, and social memory theory, Joseph sheds new light on the inter-relationships between myth, history, and memory in the study of Christian origins and the contemporary (re)construction of the historical Jesus. A Social History of Christian Origins is primarily intended for academic specialists and students in ancient history, biblical studies, New Testament studies, Religious Studies, Classics, as well as the general reader interested in the beginnings of Christianity.
