Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring nonviolent images of atonement-- The "sacrifice" of Jesus is one of the most central doctrines in Christianity--and one of the most controversial, especially in contemporary debate (and after the appearance of films such as The Passion of the Christ). The implications of a violent parent and the necessity of innocent suffering are profoundly troubling to many people. Are they nevertheless necessary elements of Christian theology? Christian A. Eberhart makes a decisive contribution to these debates by carefully and clearly examining the Old Testament metaphors of sacrifice and atonement and the ways these metaphors were taken over by early Christians to speak of the significance of Christ. Eberhart shows that these New Testament appropriations have been misunderstood as requiring a logic of necessary violence; rather they speak to larger Christological themes concerning the whole mission and life of Jesus.

Book excerpt: What beliefs are core to the Christian faith? This book is here to help you understand the reason for your hope as a Christian so that you can see it with fresh sight and invite others into the conversation. A lot of Christians take their story—the narratives that give rise to their beliefs—for granted. They pray, go to church, perhaps even read their Bible. But they might be stuck if a stranger asked them to explain what they believe and why they believe it. Author, pastor, and theologian Mike Horton unpacks the essential and basic beliefs that all Christians share in a way that is easy to understand and applicable to our lives today. And in a way that will make you excited to be a Christian! Core Christianity covers topics like: Jesus as both fully God and fully man. The doctrine of the Trinity. The goodness of God despite a broken world. The ways God speaks. The meaning of salvation. What is the Christian calling? Includes discussion questions for individual or group use. This introduction to the basic doctrines of Christianity is perfect for those who are new to the faith, as well as those who have an interest in deepening their understanding of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ.

Book excerpt: It’s never too late to be a better father Jim Daly, president and CEO of Focus on the Family, is an expert in fatherhood—in part because his own "fathers" failed him so badly. His biological dad was an alcoholic. His stepfather deserted him. His foster father accused Jim of trying to kill him. All were out of Jim's life by the time he turned 13. Isn’t it odd—and reminiscent of the hand of God—that the director of the leading organization on family turned out to be a guy whose own background as a kid and son were pretty messed up? Or could it be that successful parenting is discovered not in the perfect, peaceful household but in the midst of battles and messy situations, where God must constantly be called to the scene? That is the mystery unraveled in this book. Using his own expertise, humor, and inexhaustible wealth of stories, Jim will show you that God can make you a good dad, a great dad, in spite of the way you’ve grown up and in spite of the mistakes you’ve made. Maybe even because of them. It’s not about becoming a perfect father. It’s about trying to become a better father, each and every day. It's about building relationships with your children through love, grace, patience, and fun—and helping them grow into the men and women they’re meant to be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God Crucified presents a new proposal for understanding New Testament Christology in its Jewish context. Using the latest scholarly discussion about the nature of Jewish monotheism as his starting point, Richard Bauckham builds a convincing argument that the early Christian view of Jesus' divinity is fully consistent with the Jewish understanding of God. Bauckham first shows that early Judaism had clear ways of distinguishing God absolutely from all other reality. When New Testament Christology is read with this Jewish context in mind, it becomes clear that early Christians did not break with Jewish monotheism; rather, they simply included Jesus within the unique identity of Israel's God. In the final part of the book Bauckham shows that God's own identity, in turn, is also revealed in the life, death, and exaltation of Jesus. Originating as the prestigious 1996 Didsbury Lectures, this volume makes a contribution to biblical studies that will be of interest to Jews and Christians alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if everything you've been told about salvation is wrong? For nearly a thousand years Christians have been hearing and repeating a story about why Jesus died on the cross. It's the only story of salvation most of them have ever heard. And it's wrong. The Bible doesn't have that story and the early Christians never heard that story - they never believed it. In Salvation (and how we got it wrong), Kenneth Myers revisits the story of our salvation, retelling it like the early Christians told it. No longer a tale of an angry God punishing his Son in payment for crimes against his honor, it becomes a tale of a loving God doing all in his power to bring healing to a humanity he desperately cares for.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twice-daily Tamid (standing) sacrifice was the focus of religious life from the time God established a covenant with the Israelites at Mount Sinai until the Jerusalem Temple's destruction in AD 70. No other sacrifice was to take precedence over the Tamid, and it was to continue as the centerpiece of worship for as long as the Sinai Covenant endured. However, the Tamid served as more than the means of atonement and covenant sanctification for Israel. It was also a sign of hope for the future sanctification for all peoples of the earth. Jesus of Nazareth is the fulfillment of that hope. The Passion of the Christ reveals the mystery of the single sacrifice of the two Tamid lambs-He who is fully man and God. Jesus became the true Tamid Lamb that all past Tamid lambs prefigured. Just as the unblemished Tamid lamb was the continual sacrifice presented in the Jerusalem Temple, Jesus is the holy unblemished Lamb "standing" before the throne of God in the heavenly Temple (Revelation 5:6). His sacrifice is continually made present in Heaven and on earthly altars during the Eucharistic celebration of the Mass.
