Vor diesem Hintergrund analysiert die militär- und politikgeschichtliche Studie den gescheiterten Angriff der Kreuzfahrer auf Damaskus im Rahmen des Zweiten Kreuzzuges im Jahre 1148. Erstmals werden diejenigen politischen und strategischen Gründe herausgearbeitet, die für die Wahl des Angriffszieles Damaskus sprachen. Dabei wird unter anderem deutlich, daß die Kreuzfahrer mit dem Angriff auf Damaskus nicht, wie bislang oft unterstellt, gegen ihre eigenen sicherheitspolitischen Interessen handelten.

Es wird zum einen ein Ausschnitt einer Quelle des christlichen Geschichtsschreibers Wilhelm von Tyrus und zum anderen ein Ausschnitt einer Quelle des muslimischen Chronisten Ibn al-Qalanisi vorgestellt und beleuchtet. Inwiefern unterscheiden sich muslimisch und christlich geprägte Darstellungen in ihrer gemeinsamen historischen Vergangenheit und Überlieferung und gibt es gar sich gleichende beziehungsweise ähnelnde Darstellungen? Bis zum heutigen Tage ist es ein undurchsichtiger Streitpunkt was genau sich an diesen Tagen vor den Toren von Damaskus abgespielt hat und welchen Einfluss die Geschehnisse auf die Truppen, Bevölkerung und den weiteren Verlauf der Kreuzzüge gehabt haben. Ziel der Arbeit ist es durch den folgenden Quellenvergleich ein etwas genaueres Bild von den Ereignissen aus Sicht der beiden aufeinandertreffenden Parteien (Kreuzfahrerheer und Muslime) zu schaffen, indem die Ansichten gegenübergestellt und verglichen werden. Stützen wird sich diese Untersuchung auf die Übersetzungen der beiden Quellen des 12. Jahrhunderts ins Englische von James Brundage und Hamilton A. R. Gibb.

Although also well-known as one of the most distinguished historians of Burgundy, he has through publications which have been appearing for over half a century established himself as the greatest living scholar working on crusading and the Latin East. His book on twelfth-century Tripoli, published in 1945, is still the standard work on the county. In the 1950s he, and Joshua Prawer, provided a revolutionary approach towards the constitution and institutions of the kingdom of Jerusalem. He went on to pave the way for an entirely new understanding of the kingdom of Cyprus. In the 1960s he was one of a few historians who were sign-posting a more empathetic view of the ideology of crusading and the motivation of crusaders, and he developed his ideas further in recent monographs on Saint Louis and on the crusades in general. His work on Catholic missions to Asia and the role of the papacy in those enterprises is generally regarded as setting standards which few can approach. Book excerpt: The idea of publishing an extensive Encyclopaedic Prosopographical Lexicon of Byzantine History and Civilization (EPLBHC) was conceived in Greece, where - with Alexios Savvides as founding editor - the first volume of the Greek EPLBHC was prepared and eventually appeared in 1996. Six volumes have been published so far, the last two (V-VI) in early summer 2006, covering letters alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and epsilon, but obviously not including C, which in Greek is divided to a large extent under K (kappa) and to a lesser extent under ? (khi). On the other hand, the gamma entries will appear under G in the English edition. Volumes I to IV of the Greek edition (1996-2002), accompanied by a separate bibliographical volume on secondary works reaching the year 1998 (2000), have been extensively cited both in lengthy reviews and footnote references. Thus, it was recently decided to continue the project on a much larger scale and to launch it in English, in this way opening it to a much wider reading public. The Greek project will continue, as well, with each project complementing the other.
