Download or read book Social Feminism written by Naomi Black and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of the history of three influential women's organizations in the United States, England, and France, Naomi Black offers a provocative new interpretation of feminism. She perceives two inherently different types of feminist thought: equity feminism, which incorporates women into existing male-dominated ideologies such as liberalism, Marxism, and socialism; and the less familiar social feminism, which emphasizes women's distinctive experiences and values. Examining the development of organizations previously considered traditional and nonpolitical—the League of Women Voters, the Women's Co-operative Guild, and the Union féminine civique et sociale—black concludes that the social feminism which characterizes these groups is a genuinely radical approach to social change.

They may be new to the study of literature, may have difficulty reading it, and may lack confidence in their critical abilities and writing skills. With these factors in mind, Meyer has put together a lively collection of stories, poems, and plays from many periods, cultures, and themes, with voices ranging from the traditional to the latest and hottest contemporary authors. As an experienced anthologist and instructor of literature, Meyer has a knack for choosing enticing selections including humorous works and readings from popular culture that students both enjoy and respond to. Complementing this unparalleled collection are proven editorial features that offer students real help with reading, appreciating, and writing about literature. The Bedford Introduction to Literature is a book designed to bring literature to life and to make students life-long readers. - Publisher.

Book Synopsis Shakespeare's Dilemmas by : Richard Horwich
Download or read book Shakespeare's Dilemmas written by Richard Horwich and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1988 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dilemma-torn hero - paralyzed between alternatives so precisely balanced that no rational basis can be found for choosing one or the other - dates back to Homer and forward to Joseph Heller. Of the dozens of writers who created such figures, none employed dilemmas more extensively or more variously than William Shakespeare; Hamlet, pondering whether «To be, or not to be, » is only the best-known of many characters in the plays who find themselves in that peculiar predicament. Horwich shows how Shakespeare's dilemmas, which he calls the classic predicament of an age suffused with philosophical subjectivity and emotional ambivalence, cut across the boundaries of dramatic genre and subject matter, illuminating such disparate works as the problem comedies, the Roman plays, and the great political and romantic tragedies.

Download or read book Room to Fly written by Padma Hejmadi and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Room to Fly is a unique journal—or ongoing memoir—by a woman who traces the elusive contours of cultural perceptions East and West, welcoming us into the intimate geography of individual lives. The book takes its shape and direction from a tenet of Japanese Sumi painting: If you depict a bird, give it space to fly. Padma Hejmadi explores the human spaces surrounding language, landscape, literacy and illiteracy, music, dance, legend, the cadence of ancient craft, and the ceaselessly unfolding layers of family relationships. Part autobiography, part lively meditation, Room to Fly represents a new genre with an old diction. Hejmadi's spare, luminous prose combines lyricism with humor and intellectual rigor, drawing us from Bombay to the Bahamas, from Japan to New England, the Greek Isles to New Mexico.
