Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jenny Pitman's success has been won against the odds. An outsider in the privileged world of racing, she has nevertheless turned herself into one of the most successful trainers in Britain today. And as a woman in a male-dominated profession, she has been forced to work doubly hard for her achievements. Jenny's love of horses has dominated her life. Born on a modest Leicestershire farm without gas, electricity or running water, she joined a racing yard at the age of fifteen. While still in her teens she married jockey Richard Pitman, and together they set up a stable. Before long, Jenny became one of the very first women to be granted a professional licence to train horses. Despite the subsequent break-up of her marriage and financial hardship, Jenny soon managed to establish herself in her own right as a fully fledged trainer. Since then, horses such as Garrison Savannah and Burrough Hill Lad have etched the Pitman name deeply in the record books. Jenny has trained the winners of all five major Nationals and two Cheltenham Gold Cups. With Corbiere in 1983 Jenny became the first woman trainer to win the Grand National - and she is still the only one to have done so. In 1993 her horse Esha Ness won the 'National that never was'. Two years later the notoriously difficult horse Royal Athlete won her this prestigious race for a second time. The success of Jenny's Lambourn stables has been very much a family affair. Like his father, Jenny's son Mark also became a successful jockey. He rode many of her horses to victory, and on retiring as a jockey worked as assistant trainer to his mother before setting up on his own. In 1997, after an eighteen-year engagement, Jenny married her long-term companion, David Stait. In the 1998 New Year's Honours list she was awarded the OBE. Her fierce will to succeed, her tenacity and her courage to fight for what she believes in, both professionally and personally - these are the foundations on which Jenny Pitman has built her life. Her frank and lively autobiography reflects this spirit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been an explosion in the quantity of sports history literature published in recent years, making it increasingly difficult to keep abreast of developments. The annual number of publications has increased from around 250 to 1,000 a year over the last decade. This is due in part to the fact that during the late 1980s and 90s, many clubs, leagues and governing bodies of sport have celebrated their centenaries and produced histories to mark this occasion and commemorate their achievements. It is also the result of the growing popularity and realisation of the importance of sport history research within academe. This international bibliography of books, articles, conference proceedings and essays in the English language is a one-stop for the sports historian to know what is new.

Book excerpt: Football is a game of opinions. Alan Hansen knows this only too well. In his long, distinguished career with Liverpool he faced some fierce public criticism from the media. Now the boot is on the other foot and Hansen himself earns a living as one of football's most outspoken and popular pundits. Hansen's autobiography is as uncompromising as the man himself. Looking back at fourteen victorious years at Anfield, he focuses on the highlights and the inspirational characters - Paisley, Fagan, Dalglish, Rush - who were so instrumental in building the club's international success. Then there were the disappointments, and the darker days at Heysel and Hillsborough. Hansen reflects on the impact both incidents had on his life, and on the future for spectators of British football. In 1991 Hansen retired from football. He explains his reasons for not wanting to stay in the game, revealing a surprising lack of self-confidence. If he were starting his playing career now, who are the teams he would want to play for - and those he wouldn't? Which managers and players does he respect? Why does he admire Wimbledon above all other home teams? Hansen addresses these questions and, now that clubs are becoming multi-faceted business empires, looks at the future for the game in the UK. Until a knee injury ended his playing career, Hansen was one of the most successful British soccer players of all time. He captained Liverpool to an historic double in 1986, and is the only person to have won all of the honours available at club level at least twice. A keen tactical understanding of the game has made him a favourite on BBC TV Match of the Day, Grandstand and Sportsnight. Before embarking on his professional playing career, Hansen was awarded a place at Aberdeen University to read history. He lives with his family in Merseyside.

Book excerpt: Generations are familiar with the haunting black and white television footage of Donald Campbell somersaulting to his death in his famous Bluebird boat on Coniston Water in January, 1967. It has become an iconic image of the decade. His towering achievements, and the drama of his passing, are thus part of the national psyche. But what of the man himself? The son of the legendary Sir Malcolm Campbell who was famous for being the ultimate record-breaker of the inter-war years - he broke the land speed record nine times and the water speed record four times with his Bluebird cars and boats - Donald Campbell was born to speed. He was outgoing and flamboyant, yet carefully orchestrated the image he presented to the world. Some saw him as a playboy adventurer; others, such as the radio producer on the twenty-first anniversary of his death, as a reckless daredevil with a death wish. He was known to take solace in extra-marital dalliances, and was obsessed with spiritualism. And in his final years, battered by a 360-mph accident while attempting the land record on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, and his prolonged and anti-climactic subsequent effort on the treacherous Lake Eyre in Australia, Campbell appeared a haggard and often frightened man. He had become trapped on his record-breaker's treadmill as he continually sought to prove himself to his illustrious father, in whose long shadow he felt forever trapped. DONALD CAMPBELL: THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK paints a fascinating portrait of an intense, complex, superstitious yet abnormally brave man who was driven not only by the desire to prove that he was worthy of the mantle of his father, but also by his fervent and unswerving desire to keep Britain at the forefront of international speed endeavour. This book generates a unique insight into how his desperate fear of failure finally lured him into taking one risk too many.

Book excerpt: The autobiography of true national treasure LESLIE PHILLIPS, an actor who has featured in more British Number One box office smashes than anyone else and was the voice of The Sorting Hat in Harry Potter 'A lively book full of amusing anecdotes and insights into the life of a zestfully ambitious actor' SPECTATOR Leslie Phillips's story begins with a poverty-stricken childhood in north London, made all the worse when his father died when Leslie was just ten years old. Soon after, he began his acting career, and since then he has worked with all the greats, from Laurence Olivier to Steven Spielberg. Best known for his comic roles in the Carry On and Doctor series, he took the decision in later life to take on more serious roles in films such as Empire of the Sun, Out of Africa and Scandal, as well as performing in plays such as The Cherry Orchard. Packed with hilarious anecdotes, in this long-awaited autobiography he recalls some of the great characters he has worked with, and also highlights how different he is in real life from his onscreen persona as a bounder. It is a fascinating story, brilliantly told.
