Book excerpt: Jean-Michel Wilmotte's unique adventure took off in the mid-1970s and continues today, with undisputed relevance. The coherence of his commitment to design is illustrated here on nearly 1,500 objects. Unique and exclusive, this book is the first to retrace the forty years of creating objects by designer Jean-Michel Wilmotte. Jean-Michel Wilmotte studied interior design at the Camondo school of interior design in Paris. Just two years after graduating, he founded his own agency in Paris in 1975. His style influenced a number of personalities, including François Mitterrand, who asked him to design part of his private apartments in the Elysée Palace in 1982. Jean-Michel Wilmotte earned his degree in architecture in 1993, allowing him to work on large scale and to develop the concept of "interior design of cities", while maintaining the same attention to the use of "noble materials and extreme attention to finishes" notable in his smaller scaled works. Over the years, the agency has diversified and operates primarily in five key areas: architecture, interior design, museology, urbanism and design. An attention to details allows Jean-Michel Wilmotte and his team to work from the smallest to the largest scale: moving from a house to a skyscraper, from a shop to a corporate headquarters, from a gallery of art to a museum, and from street furnitures to urban design.

This practice has recently completed the Russian Orthodox Spiritual and Cultural Center in Paris (France), the headquarters of L Oreal Group in Clichy (France), the headquarters of Unilever group in Rueil-Malmaison (France), the Center for Arts of the International School of Geneva (Switzerland), the Allees Richaud & Allees Foch high-end residential buildings in Versailles (France), the Cultural Center of Daejeon (South Korea), the 36,200-seat Allianz Riviera Stadium in Nice (France), the London headquarters of Google and JCDecaux (United Kingdom), the Ferrari Sporting Management Center (Formula 1) in Maranello (Italy), a Convention and Exhibition Center in Sao Paulo (Brazil), and an ecological park in Baku (Azerbaijan) for the 2015 European Games. In these projects, which are both innovative and sustainable, the design always takes into account landscaping, lighting, materials, and finishes, while being respectful of the local and historic context of the site.

Book excerpt: Public Interiority reconsiders the limits of the interior and its perceived spaces, exploring the notion that interior conditions can exist within an exterior environment, and therefore challenging the very foundations of the interior architecture field. Public Interiority contains eight chapters and 16 visual essays that document the historical, material, and social conditions in contemporary cities, reconsidering the limits of the interior, resiliency in design, spatial perception, and territories within curated urban exteriors. Topics include the supergraphics of Black Lives Matter protests, privacy and US Supreme Court landmark cases, Instagram as a quasi-public interior, domestic simulation in Victorian curative environments, the micro-urban commons of public transit, and the timely study uncovering Jean-Michel Wilmotte’s approach to "urban interior designing," among many others. Including scholarly and visual essays by experts from a range of disciplines, including architecture, interior architecture, landscape architecture, exhibition design, craft and the visual arts, and design history and theory, this volume will be a helpful resource for all those upper-level students and scholars working in these related fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical examination of metropolitan planning in Paris—the “Grand Paris” initiative—and the building of today's networked global city. In 2007 the French government announced the “Grand Paris” initiative. This ambitious project reimagined the Paris region as integrated, balanced, global, sustainable, and prosperous. Metropolitan solidarity would unite divided populations; a new transportation system, the Grand Paris Express, would connect the affluent city proper with the low-income suburbs; streamlined institutions would replace fragmented governance structures. Grand Paris is more than a redevelopment plan; it is a new paradigm for urbanism. In this first English-language examination of Grand Paris, Theresa Enright offers a critical analysis of the early stages of the project, considering whether it can achieve its twin goals of economic competitiveness and equality. Enright argues that by orienting the city around growth and marketization, Grand Paris reproduces the social and spatial hierarchies it sets out to address. For example, large expenditures for the Grand Paris Express are made not for the public good but to increase the attractiveness of the region to private investors, setting off a real estate boom, encouraging gentrification, and leaving many residents still unable to get from here to there. Enright describes Grand Paris as an example of what she calls “grand urbanism,” large-scale planning that relies on infrastructural megaprojects to reconfigure urban regions in pursuit of speculative redevelopment. Democracy and equality suffer under processes of grand urbanism. Given the logic of commodification on which Grand Paris is based, these are likely to suffer as the project moves forward.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this volume clarify the notion of political identity by focusing on the metaphysics of polities. By analysing the notion of political identity, they provide the conceptual resources for a deeper understanding of the theoretical and practical debates on populism, the crisis of sovereignty, the feasibility of a world government, and ethical, religious, and cultural pluralism. What is a political community? Any answer to this question lies at the intersection between three fields: metaphysics, philosophy of action, and political philosophy. The question concerns how and why a plurality of individuals becomes a political unity, what principles or forces keep that unity together, and what threats that unity can encounter. In this volume, the contributors investigate how different metanormative views affect the possible answers to this metaphysical question. They explore the role that the individual identities of agents play in grounding common practices that underpin political life. They investigate the individual identities of agents as the result of the interplay between natural and cultural factors. Finally, they observe the ways in which a political community, as a collection of individuals who hang together in an attempt to reach common purposes, demonstrate a certain metaphysical solidity. Political Identity and the Metaphysics of Polities will appeal to researchers and advanced students working in metaphysics, political philosophy, political theory, and philosophy of action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: UNESCO lists The Historic Center of Avignon as a World Heritage Site. The award recognizes the 13th- and 14th-century papal palaces and cathedrals massed inside Avignon''s remarkably intact 14th-century walls. But visitors have always loved Avignon. In fact, this small city, set above a lazy bend in the Rh ne, has attracted appreciation since the Stone Age. Maybe the first Neolithic settlers chose the heights of The Rocher des Doms to be safely above the Rh ne''s fertile flood plain; we''re romantic enough to hope they also liked the view. Today, the Rocher des Doms is a scented formal garden overlooking the Pont St. B n zet, with extensive vistas of the surrounding country, reaching as far as the Alpilles, Mt. Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail. This is a genuinely seductive place. And since many of its narrow, winding streets are for pedestrians only, it manages to be peaceful yet lively and entertaining at the same time. The hardest part of beginning a tour of Provence in Avignon is deciding when to leave. In a region saturated with Roman monuments and the echoes of Roman culture, N mes is the most Roman of cities. The well maintained state of its ancient monuments and public buildings is due to the fact that several of them have been in virtually continual use since Roman times. The Amphitheater, built by the Romans in about 40 or 50 BC, is still the main venue for all kinds of festivals and spectacles. The classical, colonnaded Maison Carr e, once a Roman temple, has been the town hall, a private home, a stable, a monastery, and a church before its current incarnation as a museum. For years, Ferne Arfin has been playing in Provence, a place where Van Gogh spent his most prolific years painting. She draws from her experience to tell you about the people, their culture and the way of life. Covering every town, village and city in the region, this book takes you sightseeing in Avignon, Nimes and beyond, shopping, to the best beaches. Comprehensive background information - history, culture, geography and climate - gives you a solid knowledge of each destination and its people, with details on the museums, historic sites and local attractions. Places to stay and eat; transportation to, from and around your destination; practical concerns; tourism contacts - it''s all here! Detailed regional and town maps feature walking and driving tours. This guide is extracted from our full Adventure Guide to Provence & the Cote d''Azur, though with additional details. Following are some reviews of the complete guide: "The guide offers plenty of practical information for the visitor who wants to explore the region. It includes info on places to stay and eat, but that isn''t its strongest point. Its best features are the adventure tips it provides for each area (boating, biking, walking, kayaking, windsurfing, you name it!) and the pertinent background information that adds depth to a visit: for example, a note about French author Antoine de St Exup ry when covering Agay, a word on Winter on the Mont Ventoux. These fall outside of the classic insights on these locations. As a frequent and long-time visitor to the region, I find the information in the guide right on the mark and recommend it highly." -- Florence Chatzigianis. "I''ve just returned from a trip to Antibes and Nice and I used this book as my guide. The recommendations were spot on; really terrific. This is a rare thing, a guide book that inspires and tempts you without making your head spin. All the detail you need is there but this book is so much more!" -- Annie Smith. "What a great hands-on book. This is the best guide to Provence and the Riviera I''ve come across. Her section on St. Remy and Eygalieres is perfect. "Le Petit Bru" may have been the best meal I had...and a good value. This is the one to get before you leave." -- Chuck E. "Not being the type to jump off bridges or hang glide over the treetops, I was a little worried about "Adventure Guide" in the book title, but it turns out that this guidebook features just the kind of soft adventures I enjoy: hiking, touring and poking into the interesting recesses of a country, followed by an evening of good food and wine. The author''s biography says she''s been visiting Provence for 20 years and it shows in her writing, which includes all the little insider tips that you''d expect from someone with her experience. With the practical information I''ve found here, it may take me the next 20 years to enjoy everything this book brings to light." -- Betsy Malloy. "There are a lot of tour books for this region, but this new one is really fun. There is lots of information on "out of the way" places and interesting festivals, all sorts of things which you won''t find anywhere else. I love Provence, and this book will definitely come with me the next time I go. The information is presented clearly and is well written, so it''s easy to use. Lots of nice pictures, too. I like this guide a lot, and I hope to see more French guides from this writer." -- J. Kingan. "If you are interested in experiencing the gorgeous Cote D''Azur and Provence areas and not just enjoying the scenery from a tour bus or car, this is the book for you. Filled with tips on out-of-the-way places, great hikes and bike rides." -- L. Lotz
