Thornton School of Music, located in Los Angeles, California. It features eighteen twelve-bar blues rhythm guitar accompaniments in the style of guitarists such as Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Nine of the songs use a shuffle feel and nine use a straight eighth note feel. the play along CD contains two versions of each of the eighteen songs in the book. the first version has the guitar part and the second version is without the guitar. This gives you the ability to play along with the guitar part as a guide and also to play along with the track as the only guitarist. The examples are written using traditional musical notation and tablature. Included for each song is a short description of the important points to consider when learning each example. the book presents songs that will expand the guitarist's vocabulary by presenting a variety of different ways a guitarist can play through the twelve bar blues. A number of different chord variations, keys and tempos are used in demonstrating these eighteen idiomatic rhythm guitar parts that have been used by the masters.

They are an essential part of great improvising and melody writingbecause playing chord notes in the right places creates solid melody lines. Chord notes sound more resolved than notes that are chromatic (out of the key). Practicing arpeggios will improve your ability to learn melodies, make reading music easier, and develop your tone and picking accuracy. The first part of thisbook focuses on the basic fingerings of the folliowing six arpeggios: major 7th,major 7th (#5), dominant 7th, minor 7th, minor 7th (b5), and diminished 7th. This book along with its accompanying audio represents a comprehensive guide to all things arpeggio. It delves into traditional applications of arpeggios, as well as howthey relate to slash chords, modal music and more. The student will learn about how arpeggios fall over standard chord progressions, as well as how to embellisharpeggios to make them more musical in performance situations. It also opens up some of the mystery of the fretboard by showing exactly how the fretboard relates to diatonic harmony without using single note scales. Not only will new lines appear easier, but new and usable chord voicings will also appear. These chords will be related to the lines being played. It also will help move away from position playing and open up the neck, removing any black holes. There is also a look at phrasing and how rhythmic understanding is important to the improving harmonic and melodic development. Companion CD included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around 1930, a highly popular and distinctive type of accordion music, commonly known as conjunto, emerged among Texas-Mexicans. Manuel Peña's The Texas-Mexican Con;unto is the first comprehensive study of this unique folk style. The author's exhaustive fieldwork and personal interviews with performers, disc jockeys, dance promoters, recording company owners, and conjunto music lovers provide the crucial connection between an analysis of the music itself and the richness of the culture from which it sprang. Using an approach that integrates musicological, historical, and sociological methods of analysis, Peña traces the development of the conjunto from its tentative beginnings to its preeminence as a full-blown style by the early 1960s. Biographical sketches of such major early performers as Narciso Martínez (El Huracán del Valle), Santiago Jiménez (El Flaco), Pedro Ayala, Valerio Longoria, Tony de la Rosa, and Paulino Bernal, along with detailed transcriptions of representative compositions, illustrate the various phases of conjunto evolution. Peña also probes the vital connection between conjunto's emergence as a powerful symbolic expression and the transformation of Texas-Mexican society from a pre-industrial folk group to a community with increasingly divergent socioeconomic classes and ideologies. Of concern throughout the study is the interplay between ethnicity, class, and culture, and Peña's use of methods and theories from a variety of scholarly disciplines enables him to tell the story of conjunto in a manner both engaging and enlightening. This important study will be of interest to all students of Mexican American culture, ethnomusicology, and folklore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New compositions for solo classic guitar by acclaimed guitarist and composer, David Pritchard. All solos are in standard notation. In addition to all the music I've written over the past twenty years for multiple acoustic guitars, I have on occasion felt inspired to write a smaller number of pieces for just one guitar. Exploring a meditative feel was my motivation for writing "A Pale View, A Silent Dream, and Restoration. A Silent Dream can be played either as a solo piece or it can be enhanced by having another guitarist play the second part. Arundo is basically a right hand study piece, alternating between two patterns both in different meters, while Orb Weaver is primarily a Latin rhythm study with much syncopation, alternating simply between two chords. Coryza was written with the acoustic steel string in mind using DADGAD tuning.
