Book excerpt: Many musical styles around the world have been born from struggle and search for cultural identity. The same idea applies to Jazz and the Afro-Caribbean music created within the African diaspora and influenced by Latin and European styles in the United States. More recently, the meaning of diaspora has been used to refer to a group of people and some aspects of their culture (Rivera 2010, 104). For older and newer generations of Puerto Rican musicians two traditions have intersected to create a modern form of expression that reaffirms Puerto Rico's musical creativity and contemporary tendency. In 1989 Warren Pinckney wrote the last known paper about jazz made by Puerto Ricans. Besides Warren Pinckney's article, Puerto Rican Jazz and the Incorporation of Folk Music: An Analysis of New Musical Direction, (1989) I have not found another paper or essay published specifically about jazz music made by Puerto Ricans. The contribution and innovation of these musicians and rhythms has been overlooked in most cases or even completely neglected in the literature. This thesis will explore the musical influence jazz has had in traditional Puerto Rican music and vice versa. It will also discuss the modernization and revitalization of traditional Puerto Rican music by incorporating jazz, providing a new visualization of Latin American music. The field research undergirding this thesis was driven by three goals: first, to demonstrate the contribution of Puerto Rican musicians to contemporary Jazz and Latin Jazz; second, to determine how movement back and forth between the United States and the island has fueled both jazz and traditional music; and third, to describe how this movement has revitalized and modernized Puerto Rican musical traditions. What has emerged is a story that follows an outline of traditional Puerto Rican music and Jazz tradition being melded together. The book also contains a brief discussion on Puerto Rican women in jazz today followed by a discussion surrounding issues affecting women in the arts today. Throughout the text there is commentary on the situations facing women, especially, male chauvinism, colonialism, racism, and anti-women prejudice in jazz. Every effort was made to include only facts that are easily confirmable. Unsupported tales or questionable events are avoided to ensure that the material contained in the volume can be used for teaching purposes and for curriculum development when credit is given to this work. In the process of developing the central theme of this volume, special effort was made to document those experiences where Puerto Rican women collaborate with members of the African American community to confirm how the cross-cultural collaboration resulted beneficial to both ethnic peoples. The book will detail the many instances where members of the African-American community assisted the fledgling Puerto Rican artists achieve success and stardom. Figures such as Helen Elise Smith, David J. Martin, Will Marion Cook, Ada ‘Bricktop’ Smith, Dr. Laurence Clifton Jones, and other distinguished African-Americans are described. My hope is that this information will be added to historic works in African-American Studies.

By the 1960s New York City gave birth to the first true Salsa music in America with jazz and Latin musicians collaborating with one another. Some of the most notable performers responsible for the creation of the "New York" sound are Ray Barretto, Eddie Palmieri, Charlie Palmieri, Johnny Pacheco and Willie Colon. The fusion between Puerto Rico and New York's salsa music with jazz was stated through the music of Papo Lucca and Ray Barretto, who not only fused both styles but created an innovative and appealing sound of Latin music. This project report is an examination of the techniques, instrumentation, and musicians that Lucca and Barretto used with their bands during the 1960s and 70s. Personal transcriptions of tunes recorded by Lucca and Barretto will be analyzed and compared to earlier versions of these same songs, with the purpose of highlighting the fusion of salsa traditions with jazz harmonies. These transcriptions will then be used to rearrange a traditional Latin tune with contemporary jazz techniques and harmonies.
