But a surprise summer reunion changes everything when it gives them the chance to turn up the heat. Effie Olsen thought she’d never live on the tiny Maine island where she grew up, but she’s returning from sixteen years as a professional chef in far-flung countries for one summer and one summer only. Her hometown boasts one of the best restaurants in the US, and lucky for her, Brown Butter needs a sous chef. Effie's eager for a chance at redemption after her last job went up in flames, but reluctant to set down roots in a place that reminds her of the ghosts of her past. Until, that is, she runs into Ernie Callahan, her onetime best friend who now works in the very same restaurant. Early morning swims and late-night games of truth or dare with Ernie remind her of what she’s been missing while traveling the world. He knows her better than anyone, and it doesn’t hurt that his smile lights her up brighter than the lighthouses dotting the craggy coastline. But their restaurant has a secret that’s bursting at the seams, and if Effie doesn’t keep it, her job will vanish into the foggy Maine air. As summer draws to a close, her dream job and the perfect guy are both within reach. Her salty seaside hometown might be the key to Effie’s sweet ending...if she can learn to let her heart lead the way in time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon to be a TV series! Enter “an exciting and dynamic new world of storytelling in which spirituality and science are inextricably entwined” (Deepak Chopra) with this boxed set of the engaging, whip-smart, and witty Ravi PI series. In Her Nightly Embrace, Ravi Chandra Singh is the last guy you’d expect to become a private detective. A failed religious scholar, he now works for Golden Sentinels, an upmarket London private investigations agency. His colleagues are a band of gleefully amoral and brilliant screw-ups and together, they are hired to solve the problems of some of the most powerful people in town. But Ravi is in over his head with increasingly gonzo and complex cases—and the recent visions that he’s been having of Hindu gods aren’t helping. As Ravi struggles to stay ahead of danger, he wonders if he’s delusional—or if he might, in fact, be an unrecognized shaman of the modern world. Her Beautiful Monster continues the vivid series with Ravi’s colleagues at Golden Sentinels discovering that he sees gods in moments of heightened anxiety and stress. They are all surprisingly fine with it and even encourage him to incorporate his visions into his work, especially now that the cases have become more intense. But their latest case—a search for a dead Russian oligarch’s last will and testament—leads to more than anyone expected: a missing heir, murderous relatives, and geopolitical implications. So, when Ravi’s boss sends him to Los Angeles to wait out the heat, it’s almost a relief…until Ravi’s past catches up to him. Finally, in Her Fugitive Heart, Ravi simply desires to marry his girlfriend in peace, but events conspire to keep things anything but peaceful. An actress hires the agency to track down the source of a sex tape she never made, yet still appeared in. A weekend party in a deceased rock star’s country mansion where the investigators are charged with surveilling the rich guests for dirt goes way out of control. A terrorist leader goes missing in London before he can turn himself in to the CIA and the agency is hired to help track him down. And finally, Ravi’s boss’s secret plans to make himself a major player in the world stage blows up in his face and Ravi must go into hiding. The future of the Golden Sentinels and Ravi hang in the balance in the gripping and unforgettable conclusion to the Ravi PI series.

Wade, renowned radical doula and educator, speaks to the intersections of systemic issues—such as access to health care, house transportation, and nutrition—and personal trauma work that, if healed, have the power to lead us to collective liberation in all facets of life. Collective liberation rests on the idea that in order for us all to have equity in this world—from the safety of childbirth, to the ability to bring a baby home to a safe community, to having access to resources, safety, and opportunities over the long term—we must all become liberated individuals. Birthing Liberation creates a path to social and systemic change, starting within the birthing world and expanding far beyond.

Book excerpt: Located in a rapidly-growing county in the southeastern United States, Peachtree Alternative School is a dumping ground for chronically disruptive students that regular teachers can no longer handle. The school has some of the toughest kids that society has to offer: kids who have dealt drugs, attempted rape, brought weapons to school, and made terrorist threats. Neglect, understaffing, and overcrowding create a volatile situation; Teachers survive threats, assaults, brawls, and rampages with their therapeutic philosophies barely intact. The Forgotten Room is a teacher survival story. It examines the darker side of American education through chronicling the course of Peachtree Alternative School's tenth and final year. It offers a glimmer of hope in the safe zones created by hardworking teachers, but it is also a cautionary tale about the consequences of bureaucrats neglecting troubled teens. Hollowell's multidisciplinary book provides a rare look at public alternative schooling in America. This gritty and compelling ethnography is part of a growing movement in academia to make ethnographic studies more accessible. It exposes punitive school policy, demonstrates the prison-industrial complex, and reveals school board corruption. In addition, it pinpoints quality teaching of chronically disruptive youth. As ethnographic nonfiction, The Forgotten Room breaks down the walls between social science and literature.

Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of realism and phantasm, an attempt to shed light on what appears to be mundane and yet could turn macabre, but for small twists of fate... an entertaining concept for those who wonder, ÒWhat if...Ó Obviously, the names of characters were changed to protect the guilty, but parts of the story were based on a reflection of my past... hopefully, not on my future! IÕve been blessed in life to be a husband, a father, a boxer, a safecracker, and a gunfighter. Certain facets of my resume are reflected as the storyline unfolds. Young Willie MacAyne was seemingly born with a desire to Òsend lead down rangeÓ and to show the world his prowess with guns and brains. He had more talent and ambition than could be contained with parameters. With age, he came to be very fast with his wit and weapons. Each, at times, bring him back to the brink of disaster.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia) has been inhabited for millennia by a heterogeneous populace. However, in the wake of World War II, when independence movements began to gain momentum in these French colonies, the dominant national discourses attempted to define national identities by exclusion. One rallying cry from the 1930s was "Islam is my religion, Arabic is my language, Algeria is my fatherland." In this incisive postcolonial study, Jarrod Hayes uses literary analysis to examine how Francophone novelists from the Maghreb engaged in a diametric nation-building project. Their works imagined a diverse nation peopled by those who were excluded by the dominant political discourses, especially those who did not conform to traditional sexual norms. By incorporating representations of marginal sexualities, sexual dissidence, and gender insubordination, Maghrebian novelists imagined an anticolonial struggle that would result in sexual liberation and envisioned nations that could be defined and developed inclusively.
