Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion in Japan: Shintoism Buddhism Christianity Foreign trade, save for some concessions, - accom panied by the severest restrictions, - permitted to the Dutch; no foreigners were allowed to enter, and no natives to leave, the empire; the mission aries were expelled, and Christianity was prohibited under pain of death. The Japanese, as has been said, suspected everybody and shut out the world. Previous to this crisis the English had retired; but when, in 167 3, our country sought to resume friendly relations, the connexion existing between the English and Portuguese courts proved an insuperable obstacle 1 Subsequent overtures made in 1849, were courteously but firmly rejected; though the period of Japan's isolation was, as later events proved, almost at an end. In 1853, the Government of the United States despatched a fleet across the Pacific, under the command of Com modore Perry, to insist upon the surrender of a policy which, it was urged, no one nation of the world had a right to adopt towards the rest. Whether the arguments with which this position was advanced would of themselves have prevailed, is impossible to say; but since it was evident that should words fail, sterner measures would be resorted to, Japan had no choice but to submit. Treaties were accordingly concluded, first with the United States, and subsequently with England. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The Beginning of Heaven and Earth by : Christal Whelan
Download or read book The Beginning of Heaven and Earth written by Christal Whelan and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1996-09-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1865 a French priest was visited by a small group of Japanese at his newly built church in Nagasaki. They were descendants of Japan's first Christians, the survivors of brutal religious persecution under the Tokugawa government. The Kakure Kirishitan, or "hidden Christians," had practiced their religion in secret for several hundred years. Sometime after their visit the priest received a copy of the Kakure bible, the Tenchi Hajimari no Koto, "Beginning of Heaven and Earth," an intriguing amalgam of Bible stories, Japanese fables, and Roman Catholic doctrine. Whelan offers a complete translation of this unique work accompanied by an illuminating commentary that provides the first theory of origin and evolution of the Tenchi. Today, the few Kakure Kirishitan communities still in existence view the Tenchi as strange and flawed, expressing a distorted form of Christianity. It is, however, the only text produced by the Kakure Kirishitan that depicts their highly syncretistic tradition and provides a colorful window through which to examine the dynamics of religious acculturation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shinto Cult: A Christian Study of the Ancient Religion of Japan Japanese language, literature, and archaeology a subject of extensive and minute research. Another and much larger work, comprising thirty books, and containing a record of much of the same mythology and history as the Ko-ji-ki, is called the Nikon or Chronicles of J apan.1 It is a composite of various elements derived from numerous different sources, and while it reports in substance the myths and stories of the gods as they are found in the Ko-ji-ki, it makes no mention of that older work and omits some things which the older work records. It gives, however, a num ber and variety of reports of the myths and tra ditions, informing us how, in one ancient writing, it is so and so recorded; in another writing, it is somewhat difierently told. This feature enhances its value for purposes of comparison among the varying traditions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Christianity in Japan written by Masanobu Ishizaka and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in Japan: 1859-1883 Christianization of Japan does not simply mean a conversion of heathens, nor an uplifting of the ignorant to a higher enjoyment of civilized life as is often supposed by the American public; but it involves a far wider question. It is, in short, an attempt to reconstruct the Oriental idea upon the basis of the Occidental principle, or to implant the seeds of Christian truth into already cultivated and fertilized soil, or, in other words, it is another crusade of the western nations against the Asiatic nations in a different form and from different motives. The struggle between the Orient and the Occident is nothing new. For centuries the East and West regarded each other as irreconcilable enemies, and the borders of Europe were a permanent battlefield between these two antagonistic forces. While they were thus struggling with each other there sprang up two distinct civilizations, each differing diametrically from the other. One, starting from the valleys of the Nile and the Euphrates, went westward through Europe and America and developed into the Christian religion. The other, rising at the foot of the Himalaya, moved eastward to the extremity of Asia and appeared in Buddhism and Confucianism. The one characterizes a free state; the other, an absolute monarchy. One is a positive principle; the other, a negative principle. These two diametrically opposed principles, the twins of the world's history, which fought for their supremacy for so many centuries without ever coming to peaceful terms, happen to meet again in Japan today after each has completed its civilization in its own direction. What will be the outcome of this second meeting? Will it be the renewal of the old endless struggle? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The Christian Faith in Japan (Classic Reprint) by : Herbert Moore
Download or read book The Christian Faith in Japan (Classic Reprint) written by Herbert Moore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Faith in Japan The aim of this little volume is not to give a complete account of missionary work in Japan, still less to provide a general description of the country or the people, but to afford to the general reader a sufficient introduction to both to enable him to appreciate the work which the Holy Catholic Church of Japan has already accomplished, and its prospects of development in the immediate future. By far the greater number of professing Christians in Japan at the present time are attached to the Russian or the Roman Missions or to Missions started by various Non conformist Bodies. It is from no desire to create a false impression of the importance, from a numerical standpoint, of the Japan Church that a detailed account of these other Missions has been omitted. The omission is simply due to exigencies of Space. The Rev. Herbert Moore, to whom the Society is indebted for writing this account of its work, was a member of the St. Andrew's Brotherhood, Tokyo, from 1891 to 189 5, and was afterwards a missionary at Kobe for two years. Book Synopsis History of Japanese Religion by : Masaharu Anesaki
Download or read book History of Japanese Religion written by Masaharu Anesaki and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-01-15 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1930, History of Japanese Religion shows the interaction of various forces which manifested their vitality more in combination than in opposition. A saying ascribed to Prince Shotoku, the founder of Japanese civilization, compares the three religious and moral systems found in Japan to the root, the stem and branches, and the flowers and fruits of a tree. Shinto is the root embedded in the soil of the people's character and national traditions; Confucianism is seen in the stem and branches of legal institutions, ethical codes, and educational systems; Buddhism made the flowers of religious sentiment bloom and gave the fruits of spiritual life. These sentences outlines the scheme of the work and achievement that has long maintained a high reputation among students and scholars. This important and frequently cited book has been out of print for many decades and thus increasingly difficult to access. It is therefore a privilege as well as a pleasure to make it available once again in a complete and unabridged reprint of the original. This is a must read for students of religion, Japanese culture and Japanese history.

Download or read book The Development of Religion in Japan (Classic Reprint) written by George William Knox and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of Religion in Japan Japan Offers a field for study which has peculiar advantages. Its history is comparatively brief, and the successive moments in its development are well marked. By the aid of historical criticism, the primi tive rites and beliefs can be discerned. These were rapidly supplanted or transformed by the introduction of an alien civilisation - a process which can be traced step by step. The imported system, however, did not remain foreign, but was modified at every point by the genius and needs of the people. Especially in structive is the influence of the rise and development of the feudal system. Finally, in our day, new factors of peculiar potency are introduced, with results which can be understood as yet only in part. Nevertheless, through all, there has been a continuity so marked that The Development of Religion in Japan ex presses the fundamental fact more truly than does the title suggested in the beginning The Religions of Japan. Book Synopsis Religious Violence in Contemporary Japan by : Ian Reader
Download or read book Religious Violence in Contemporary Japan written by Ian Reader and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tokyo subway attack in March 1995 was just one of a series of criminal activities including murder, kidnapping, extortion, and the illegal manufacture of arms and drugs carried out by the Japanese new religious movement Aum Shinrikyo, under the guidance of its leader Asahara Shoko. Reader looks at Aum's claims about itself and asks, why did a religious movement ostensibly focussed on yoga, meditation, asceticism and the pursuit of enlightenment become involved in violent activities? Reader discusses Aum's spiritual roots, placing it in the context of contemporary Japanese religious patterns. Asahara's teaching are examined from his earliest public pronouncements through to his sermons at the time of the attack, and statements he has made in court. In analysing how Aum not only manufactured nerve gases but constructed its own internal doctrinal justifications for using them Reader focuses on the formation of what made all this possible: Aum's internal thought-world, and on how this was developed. Reader argues that despite the horrors of this particular case, Aum should not be seen as unique, nor as solely a political or criminal terror group. Rather it can best be analysed within the context of religious violence, as an extreme example of a religious movement that has created friction with the wider world that escalated into violence.
