Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japanese Intervention in the Russian Far East The conflict between Tsarist Russia and Japan, which culmi usted in actual warfare, was brought about by the identity of the policies of the two countries in Korea and Manchuria, and in part in Mongolia. Both sides, although they professed to the outer world the principles of independence, were actually aiming not only to gain a foothold in those regions, but to establish themselves there both economically and politically. When J a pan, having acquired rights to Liao-tung as a result of the war with China in 1894, was obliged to return this district to China, after the protests of Russia, Germany and France, this step, in which the chief part was played by Russia, could of course not gain the sympathies of the Japanese. All the more was this the case, when Russia soon after (in 1896) obtained a valuable concession in Manchuria, namely, the zone for the construction of the Chinese Eastern Railway, two years later obtained the lease of the aforesaid Liao-tung (port Arthur) and then, after a further two years, under cover of the Boxer uprising, ocen pied Manchuria. The effort of Russia in 1901 to legalize this seizure immediately encountered the opposition of Japan. The real threat involved of as successful an aggression on the part of Tsarist Russia in Korea, manifestly imposed upon Japan the ineluctable conflict with Russia unless Japan should be will ing to reconcile herself to defeat. But the events following upon the defeat of Tsarist Russia revealed the fact that Japan, emboldened by her victory, already harbored desires of another kind: she not only was not satisfied with the victory in Korea and Southern Manchuria, not only had designs on Northern Manchuria, but began to display open tendencies to fortify herself on the Far Eastern shores of Rus sia itself. These tendencies at first manifested themselves in two dirce tions: in the effort to obtain the dominating influence in the fisheries rights in the Far East and in the attempt to force a path, first, to the Chinese Sungari, then to the Amur, afterlam obtained navigation rights. In 1907 a fisheries con vention was concluded, in accordance with the terms of the Portsmouth treaty, but the Japanese were not satisfied with the rights granted to them to undertake fishing on the Russian shores of the Okhotsk Sea, the Japan Sea and the Behring Sea (excluding bights and rivers), on terms similar to those eu joyed by Russian citizens, but also desired to have fisheries rights in the Russian bights and rivers, where, in view of the weakness of Russian capital in the Far East, such rights would be equivalent to a complete predominance of the Japanese in Russian Far Eastern fisheries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exciting Experiences in the Japanese-Russian War: Including a Complete History of Japan, Russia, China and Korea Relation of the United States to the Other Nations Cause of the Conflict Moved by the immensity of the death struggle precipitated by Jap and Russ in the far East, its importance to Americans in com mon with the Whole world, and the intensity of interest with which the war was received, I have undertaken to record a detailed, con nected history of this epoch making period. Recognizing the futility of attempting to make clear to the reader the unique complications of the situation without first familiarizing him with what has led. Up to the strife, particular attention has been devoted to the story of the past. Thus I have delved deep into the misty story of long ago and have borrowed without stint of the wisdom of learned men of all ages who have left to us the priceless heritage, information concerning the development of their forgotten days. To these innumerable and unnamed contributors to the treasury of human knowledge grateful acknowledgement is rendered. Without their labors it would be impossible to present an accurate, concise and comprehensive statement of the' political, economic, traditional and diplomatic factors that brought Russian and Jap face to face in deadly combat on the frozen fields and arctic seas of Korea and Man churia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sidney Lewis Gulick's 1905 masterpiece,The White Peril in the Far East: An Interpretation of the Significance of the Russo-Japanese War is a fascinating contemporary study of the most significant war of the early modern era. Japan's stunning victory over Russia was the first time that an Asian country had defeated a white European nation. Japan's victory was a clear signal to other Asians that they too could roll back the tide of Western imperialism. The republication of Gulick's book is part of an ongoing effort by this scholar to introduce modern readers to now long-forgotten out-of-print works by pioneer Japanologists. The Editor (Daniel Metraux) provides an introduction that places Gulick's work in the context of modern Japanese history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia and Japan: And a Complete History of the War in the Far East The importance of the present conflict between Russia and Japan, which from its very outset has been prosecuted by the latter nation with an energy and efficiency which has astounded the civilized world, can not be overestimated. The commercial, financial and political interests of modern nations are so interlinked with one another that a serious disarrangement of the relations between any two of the great powers is certain to have far-reaching and serious results from the very beginning. And in the conflict now under consideration this applies to the United States and Canada, perhaps, in a fuller degree than to any power of the Old World, from the fact that an ocean alone divides them from the countries concerned, and that their relations with these countries promise to surpass those of any other lands. For half a century the great powers have been arming and making military preparations, until the European peoples have come to carry a staggering burden of taxation and personal service. These colossal preparations and the many conflicting interests of the powers all point to an ultimate outbreak in a universal contest for world supremacy which many serious writers profess to believe will be the prophesied "Armageddon" of the Scriptures. The Portsmouth Peace treaty was more of a peace settlement of a makeshift sort and in the nature of a transference of property than as a solu tion of the Far Eastern question which the War had failed to solve. The fact that Japan stepped right into the Russian boot in South Manchuria by suc ceeding to all the rights, privileges, concessions, and properties granted to Russia by China sewed to strengthen this belief. The anglo-japanese alli anecs, the franco-japanese Agreement, the Russo Japanese agreements, and the open door agreements. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume in the two-volume series Rethinking the Russo-Japanese War, 1904-5, comprises nineteen chapters and is largely based on the papers presented at a special conference convened at Nichinan, Kyushu, Japan, in 2005. Importantly, it brings together a set of original essays by Japanese, Korean and Chinese scholars, together with analyses by Russian, US and European specialists, thereby reflecting the multinational mix of contemporary influences forming the international vortex of the war. The contributions are thematically structured into six topics: The Force of Personality, Facets of Neutrality, The Power of Intelligence, Interior Lines, Gender and Race, and Global Repercussions. Above all, through the use of primary sources which could not be readily accessed by contemporaries, the contributors have sought to highlight the setting of the conflict in the development of international politics and strategic thinking in the twentieth century, but at the same time eliciting fresh perspectives on the human experiences and dilemmas which impacted on different individuals and groups during the course of the war.
