Book Synopsis Tropics of Savagery by : Robert Thomas Tierney
Download or read book Tropics of Savagery written by Robert Thomas Tierney and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2010-05-20 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropics of Savagery is an incisive and provocative study of the figures and tropes of "savagery" in Japanese colonial culture. Through a rigorous analysis of literary works, ethnographic studies, and a variety of other discourses, Robert Thomas Tierney demonstrates how imperial Japan constructed its own identity in relation both to the West and to the people it colonized. By examining the representations of Taiwanese aborigines and indigenous Micronesians in the works of prominent writers, he shows that the trope of the savage underwent several metamorphoses over the course of Japan's colonial period--violent headhunter to be subjugated, ethnographic other to be studied, happy primitive to be exoticized, and hybrid colonial subject to be assimilated.

Download or read book The Columbia Anthology of Modern Japanese Literature written by J. Thomas Rimer and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 981 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring choice selections from the core anthologies The Columbia Anthology of Modern Japanese Literature: From Restoration to Occupation, 1868–1945, and The Columbia Anthology of Modern Japanese Literature: From 1945 to the Present, this collection offers a concise yet remarkably rich introduction to the fiction, poetry, drama, and essays of Japan's modern encounter with the West. Spanning a period of exceptional invention and transition, this volume is not only a critical companion to courses on Japanese literary and intellectual development but also an essential reference for scholarship on Japanese history, culture, and interactions with the East and West. The first half covers the three major styles of literary expression that informed Japanese writing and performance in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: classical Japanese fiction and drama, Chinese poetry, and Western literary representation and cultural critique. Their juxtaposition brilliantly captures the social, intellectual, and political challenges shaping Japan during this period, particularly the rise of nationalism, the complex interaction between traditional and modern forces, and the encroachment of Western ideas and writing. The second half conveys the changes that have transformed Japan since the end of the Pacific War, such as the heady transition from poverty to prosperity, the friction between conflicting ideologies and political beliefs, and the growing influence of popular culture on the country's artistic and intellectual traditions. Featuring sensitive translations of works by Nagai Kafu, Natsume Soseki, Oe Kenzaburo, Kawabata Yasunari, Mishima Yukio, and many others, this anthology relates an essential portrait of Japan's dynamic modernization.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 870 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Volume 2 of Columbia's comprehensive anthology of modern Japanese literature, thoughtfully selected and carefully translated readings portray the vast changes that have transformed Japanese culture since the end of the Pacific War. Beginning with the Allied Occupation in 1945 and concluding with the early twenty-first century, these stories, poems, plays, and essays reflect Japan's heady transition from poverty to prosperity, its struggle with conflicting ideologies and political beliefs, and the growing influence of popular culture on the country's artistic and intellectual traditions. Organized chronologically and by genre within each period, readings include fiction by Hayashi Fumiko and Oe Kenzaburo; poems by Ayukawa Nobuo, Katsura Nobuko, and Saito Fumi; plays by Mishima Yukio and Shimizu Kunio; and a number of essays, among them Eto Jun on Natsume Soseki and his brilliant novel Kokoro (The Heart of Things), and Kawabata Yasunari on the shape of his literary career and the enduring influence of classical Japanese literature. Some authors train a keen eye on the contemporary world, while others address the historical past and its relationship to modern culture. Some adopt an even broader scope and turn to European models for inspiration, while others look inward, exploring psychological and sexual terrain in new, often daring ways. Spanning almost six decades, this anthology provides a thorough introduction to a profound period of creative activity.

Now considered the standard canon of modern Japanese writing translated into English, the book includes concise introductions to the writers as well as an historical introduction by Professor Keene. Modern Japanese literature is the product of two great traditions: the native, which goes back 1300 years, and the Western, first introduced to Japan about 150 years ago. The combination of these very different traditions gave birth to a literature that stands as a unique product of the meeting of East and West. This volume is telling testimony to this historic meeting, and includes many works considered classics written from 1868 to the present day. Here in the stories, plays, and poetry of modern Japan is a mixture of the familiar and the strange that is fascinating in itself and an insightful guide to the thoughts and lives of Japanese today. This book was released on 2016-12-28 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Japan during the Imperial Age, 1868 to 1945, is rich and complex. Japan went from a feudal and secluded Asian nation to a world powerhouse in less than fifty years. Japan's relationship with the United States was just as complicated, moving from reluctant trading partner to ally in war to enemy. The documents from this era are a piece of that history. This book is an introduction to the field of collecting Japanese award documents. Over sixty-five documents are featured in color photographs that highlight their beauty and details. The documents range from awards given to farmers for growing crops to the Grand Cordon of the Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemum, signed by the emperor and given to a prime minister. The book also features tools to help the collector translate and identify documents, as well as to store and display them.
Book Synopsis Lost Leaves by : Rebecca L. Copeland
Download or read book Lost Leaves written by Rebecca L. Copeland and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2000-06-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Japanese literary historians have suggested that the Meiji Period (1868-1912) was devoid of women writers but for the brilliant exception of Higuchi Ichiyo (1872-1896). Rebecca Copeland challenges this claim by examining in detail the lives and literary careers of three of Ichiyo's peers, each representative of the diversity and ingenuity of the period: Miyake Kaho (1868-1944), Wakamatsu Shizuko (1864-1896), and Shimizu Shikin (1868-1933). In a carefully researched introduction, Copeland establishes the context for the development of female literary expression. She follows this with chapters on each of the women under consideration. Miyake Kaho, often regarded as the first woman writer of modern Japan, offers readers a vision of the female vitality that is often overlooked when discussing the Meiji era. Wakamatsu Shizuko, the most prominent female translator of her time, had a direct impact on the development of a modern written language for Japanese prose fiction. Shimizu Shikin reminds readers of the struggle women endured in their efforts to balance their creative interests with their social roles. Interspersed throughout are excerpts from works under discussion, most never before translated, offering an invaluable window into this forgotten world of women's writing.
