Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan as We Saw It In compiling this little volume for publication, its purpose should be understood as practical rather than literary. Many persons of moderate means and fond of travel desire to visit Japan, but are deterred from so doing by the lack of positive information as to the cost of making the journey and the methods by which it is made. The modes of travel, methods of living as travellers, and habits and peculiarities of the people herein given, are reproduced from the writer's journal without any attempt at literary polish, and are based on his own experiences. The expense is such as a man and wife desiring to see Japan under the most comfortable conditions must necessarily meet, when stopping at the best hotels or inns, travelling first class upon railways and steamships, and in other ways not attempting the close economy sometimes practised by travellers. The writer, with his wife, having devoted exactly four months to the trip, finds that - including cost of through tickets from Boston to Yokohama and return ($435 each), sleeping-cars, dining-cars, living expenses at hotels and inns, wines and cigars, entertainment of friends, railroad, steamship, and jinrikisha expenses, wages and transportation of Japanese attendant, donations to servants, and, in short, everything but articles purchased - the entire cost is under $2,000 gold; or, to be exact, $1,875.05. It should however be borne in mind that practically as much may be seen, and at less expense, by those who are content to accept more humble accommodations. Book excerpt: The world’s second-wealthiest country, Japan once seemed poised to overtake America. But its failure to recover from the economic collapse of the early 1990s was unprecedented, and today it confronts an array of disturbing social trends. Japan has the highest suicide rate and lowest birthrate of all industrialized countries, and a rising incidence of untreated cases of depression. Equally as troubling are the more than one million young men who shut themselves in their rooms, withdrawing from society, and the growing numbers of “parasite singles,” the name given to single women who refuse to leave home, marry, or bear children. In Shutting Out the Sun, Michael Zielenziger argues that Japan’s rigid, tradition-steeped society, its aversion to change, and its distrust of individuality and the expression of self are stifling economic revival, political reform, and social evolution. Giving a human face to the country’s malaise, Zielenziger explains how these constraints have driven intelligent, creative young men to become modern-day hermits. At the same time, young women, better educated than their mothers and earning high salaries, are rejecting the traditional path to marriage and motherhood, preferring to spend their money on luxury goods and travel. Smart, unconventional, and politically controversial, Shutting Out the Sun is a bold explanation of Japan’s stagnation and its implications for the rest of the world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan and America: A Contrast This book is not written to exaggerate the prob lems or to alarm Americans. It is the sincere wish of the author that the problems find a peaceful solution and that the ocean which separates Japan from the mainland of America remain pacific in fact as well as in name. But a solution is not to be found until the problem is stated in definite terms, nor does it aid toward a better understand ing of the situation to give the Japanese credit for a sentiment they do not possess, and attribute to them a code of morality which is as strange to them as is hard kart to us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Japan: Notes Made During Journeys of 6, 000 Miles in the Rural Districts as a Basis for a Sounder Knowledge of the Japanese People The hope with which these pages are written is that their readers may be enabled to see a little deeper into that problem of the relation of the West with Asia which the historian of the future will unquestionably regard as the greatest of our time. I lived for four and a half years in Japan. This book is a record of many of the things I saw and experienced and some of the things I was told chiefly during rural journeys-more than half the population is rural extending to twice the distance across the United States or nearly eight times the distance between the English Channel and John 0' Groats. These pages deal with a field of investigation in Japan which no other volume has explored. Because they fall short of What was planned, and in happier conditions might have been accomplished, a word or two may be pardoned on the beginnings of the book - one of the many literary victims of the War. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spring of 1960, Japan’s government passed Anpo, a revision of the postwar treaty that allows the United States to maintain a military presence in Japan. This move triggered the largest popular backlash in the nation’s modern history. These protests, Nick Kapur argues in Japan at the Crossroads, changed the evolution of Japan’s politics and culture, along with its global role. The yearlong protests of 1960 reached a climax in June, when thousands of activists stormed Japan’s National Legislature, precipitating a battle with police and yakuza thugs. Hundreds were injured and a young woman was killed. With the nation’s cohesion at stake, the Japanese government acted quickly to quell tensions and limit the recurrence of violent demonstrations. A visit by President Eisenhower was canceled and the Japanese prime minister resigned. But the rupture had long-lasting consequences that went far beyond politics and diplomacy. Kapur traces the currents of reaction and revolution that propelled Japanese democracy, labor relations, social movements, the arts, and literature in complex, often contradictory directions. His analysis helps resolve Japan’s essential paradox as a nation that is both innovative and regressive, flexible and resistant, wildly imaginative yet simultaneously wedded to tradition. As Kapur makes clear, the rest of the world cannot understand contemporary Japan and the distinct impression it has made on global politics, economics, and culture without appreciating the critical role of the “revolutionless” revolution of 1960—turbulent events that released long-buried liberal tensions while bolstering Japan’s conservative status quo.
