Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Janie O’Connelly expected her life to travel in any number of foreseeable directions. Which is why she can’t understand how she ends up standing in the Kiddie Pool of Rebirth, surrounded by unknown barefoot and braless women. For as long as she can remember, Janie O’Connelly has been dating-impaired. Although she's willing to chalk up her once-again-single status to nothing more than bad luck, her best friend Sarra “Fitz” Fitzpatrick thinks Janie is possibly cursed. Now a group (coven?) of women known as The Ladies of the Moon have made it their mission to save Janie from herself. Through mix-ups and fix-ups, Janie only knows she's going to need a strong sense of humor (and a few strong drinks!) to deal with the crazy women in her life.
Book Synopsis Sexual Violence and Armed Conflict by : Janie L. Leatherman
Download or read book Sexual Violence and Armed Conflict written by Janie L. Leatherman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-26 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year, hundreds of thousands of women become victims of sexual violence in conflict zones around the world; in the Democratic Republic of Congo alone, approximately 1,100 rapes are reported each month. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the causes, consequences and responses to sexual violence in contemporary armed conflict. It explores the function and effect of wartime sexual violence and examines the conditions that make women and girls most vulnerable to these acts both before, during and after conflict. To understand the motivations of the men (and occasionally women) who perpetrate this violence, the book analyzes the role played by systemic and situational factors such as patriarchy and militarized masculinity. Difficult questions of accountability are tackled; in particular, the case of child soldiers, who often suffer a double victimization when forced to commit sexual atrocities. The book concludes by looking at strategies of prevention and protection as well as new programs being set up on the ground to support the rehabilitation of survivors and their communities. Sexual violence in war has long been a taboo subject but, as this book shows, new and courageous steps are at last being taken Ð at both local and international level - to end what has been called the “greatest silence in history”.

Lian and a convoy of more than a hundred students, faculty, and staff must walk a thousand miles to the safety of China’s western provinces, a journey marred by hunger, cold, and the threat of aerial attack. And it is not just the student refugees who are at risk: Lian and her classmates have been entrusted with a priceless treasure, a 500-year-old collection of myths and folklore known as the Library of Legends. Within the convoy, Lian finds friendship and romance with handsome Liu Shaoming. But after one classmate is murdered and another arrested, Lian must escape before a family secret puts her in danger. Accompanied by Shao and his maidservant Sparrow, Lian makes her way to Shanghai, hoping to reunite with her mother. On the journey, Lian learns of the connection between her two companions and a tale from the Library of Legends, The Willow Star and the Prince. Learning Shao and Sparrow’s true identities compels Lian to confront her feelings for Shao. But there are broader consequences too, for as the ancient books travel across China, they awaken immortals and guardian spirits to embark on an exodus of their own, one that changes the country’s fate forever. “Janie Chang has beautifully melded history and the spirit world to create an adventurous love story.” —Lisa See, New York Times bestselling author of Shanghai Girls

Book Synopsis What We Say, who We are by : Parker English
Download or read book What We Say, who We are written by Parker English and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2010 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In What We Say, Who We Are: Leopold Senghor, Zora Neale Hurston, and the Philosophy of Language, Parker English explores the commonality between Leopold Senghor's concept of "negritude" and Zora Neale Hurston's view of "Negro expression." For English, these two concepts emphasize that a person's view of herself is above all dictated by the way in which she talks about herself. Focusing on what he identifies as "performism," English discusses the presentational/representational and externalistic/internalistic facets of "performism" as they relate to the ideas of Senghor and Hurston. English ends his work by closely examining Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God in light of his discussion of "performism," and draws new, intriguing conclusions about the extent to which Hurston's main character exemplifies W.E.B. DuBois's concept of double-consciousness. What We Say, Who We Are will certainly pique the interest of scholars interested in Africana studies, African-American literature, and the philosophy of language.

Download or read book Making Witches written by Barbara Rieti and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a little-known tradition of witch lore in Newfoundland culture. Those believed to have the power to influence the fortunes of others are not mythological characters but neighbours, relations, or even friends. Drawing from her own interviews and a wealth of material from the Memorial University Folklore and Language Archive, Barbara Rieti explores the range and depth of Newfoundland witch tradition, looking at why certain people acquired reputations as witches, and why others considered themselves bewitched. The tales that emerge - despite their seemingly fantastic elements of spells and black heart books, hags, and healing charms - concern everyday affairs and reveal the intense social interdependence central to outport life. Frequently featuring women, they provide fascinating new perspectives on female coping strategies in a volatile economy. By addressing the perennial human issues at the heart of witchcraft - construction of enmity and intertwined fate - these narrative accounts also illuminate older witch beliefs revealed in witchcraft trial documents. Making Witches shows that in storytelling communities with a rich legacy of witch lore, witch tradition has endured well into the twentieth century.
