Book excerpt: Classic Books Library presents this brand new edition of the “Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson” (1682). Mary Rowlandson (c. 1637-1711), nee Mary White, was born in Somerset, England. Her family moved to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the United States, and she settled in Lancaster, Massachusetts, marrying in 1656. It was here that Native Americans attacked during King Philip’s War, and Mary and her three children were taken hostage. This text is a profound first-hand account written by Mary detailing the experiences and conditions of her capture, and chronicling how she endured the 11 weeks in the wilderness under her Native American captors. It was published six years after her release, and explores the themes of mortal fragility, survival, faith and will, and the complexities of human nature. It is acknowledged as a seminal work of American historical literature.
Book Synopsis Benjamin Franklin by : James N. Green
Download or read book Benjamin Franklin written by James N. Green and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Benjamin Franklin, Writer and Printer begins by focusing on Franklin's career as a printer, from his apprenticeship to his retirement in 1748, by which time he had created the largest printing business in colonial America. His success as a printer was based not only on the newspaper and the popular almanacs be published, but also on job printing of various kinds, ranging from folio volumes of laws to paper money and blank forms." "Much of what we know about Franklin as writer and printer comes from his autobiography, the focus of the last part of this book. Left unfinished at his death in 1790, the autobiography was known to the world for nearly eighty years only in translations, fragments, paraphrases, and, in English, from retranslations of a 1791 French translation."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book Quadrille written by Diane Glancy and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-04-25 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 4 x 4 The first words were footprints of the wind in our ears. Sometimes we cried with earache. We wrapped our heads in animal-skins. Our cries were feral in the dark. We packed dried berries and pieces of meat and camped for the night. We followed hoof-prints in the snow. We saw a tuft of animal-hair on a thorny branch jittering as we passed We dreamed of it at night. We followed the course of streams and rivers. It was an old knowing of the world. Our journeys were written on the lines of rocks. We left stories of our migrations back and back further than before we had names. Diane Glancy begins Quadrille with the cries of primitive voices trying to understand the changes in their world after the arrival of the Colonists. Here she continues her exploration of the effect of Christianity on Eastern Native Americans that she began in The Reason for Crows. Glancy uses first-person narrative to bring characters’ interior thoughts to the surface, from early voices not yet identified as individuals, to the four Native men who helped John Eliot translate the Bible into the Algonquian language; from Tatamy, a Munsee-Delaware who translated for the missionary David Brainerd, to David Pendleton Oakerhater, a Cheyenne prisoner at Fort Marion who was later educated at St. Paul’s Church in New York and became an Episcopal priest. These poems are influenced by the Psalms of David. David is content to let his thoughts rise and fall like the tides in an interior sea. This is what it is like to run into the living God. This is what it is to be in over one’s head—to swim with thoughts heavy enough to drown.
Book Synopsis The Printer's Manual by : David Pankow
Download or read book The Printer's Manual written by David Pankow and published by RIT Cary Graphic Arts Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As printing from movable type was perfected in the fifteenth century, the mysteries of its practice were guarded by a privileged few. The rapid spread of the new art depended on the reliable mechanism for transferring knowledge. By the end of the seventeenth century, however, the pioneers of manufacturing technology and scientific inquiry were prying away at trade secrecy. This book shows the history of printing manuals from 1683 to the end of the nineteenth century, including some of the rarest in existence from the Cary Collection at Rochester institute of Technology.
