Book excerpt: Once upon a time, far, far away in the land of Africa, there were vast forests with huge lakes, ling rivers, endless lowlands, supreme mountains and high rocks. And in those forests there were cute Baboons, angry Rhinos, long-necked Giraffes, Ox-Headed Antelopes, cheerful Goats, spotted Leopards, Warthogs with vertical tails, Zebras in striped pajamas, and countless animals all living happily together. Local stories about these cute animals have been told for generations, and I have gathered them to share with children of all ages to teach them priceless lessons. I also spent ten years in Africa with out animal friends, taking pictures, learning, as well as writing stories of them. I hope children will enjoy reading and learning about our animal friends, and take valuable lessons from these local African stories to better our world.

Spencer was born without the use of his legs. When he was five, doctors decided to amputate below his pelvis to better help him get around. It didn’t bother him; he was Superman and nothing would ever get in his way. Or so he thought. Navigating through life on his hands, Spencer has always lived with purpose. But he wanted more out of life than just a paycheque and material possessions. He wanted to make an impact but wasn’t always sure how. That was until he had the epiphany: He was different for a reason. Infused with humour and humility, Spencer has never lost the hope or courage he needed to tackle personal obstacles—bullying, isolation, failure, or pride. His secret? Always standing tall.

Book excerpt: Philip Caputo’s tragic and epically ambitious new novel is set in Sudan, where war is a permanent condition. Into this desolate theater come aid workers, missionaries, and mercenaries of conscience whose courage and idealism sometimes coexist with treacherous moral blindness. There’s the entrepreneurial American pilot who goes from flying food and medicine to smuggling arms, the Kenyan aid worker who can’t help seeing the tawdry underside of his enterprise, and the evangelical Christian who comes to Sudan to redeem slaves and falls in love with a charismatic rebel commander. As their fates intersect and our understanding of their characters deepens, it becomes apparent that Acts of Faith is one of those rare novels that combine high moral seriousness with irresistible narrative wizardry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The TAZARA (Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority), or Freedom Railway, from Dar es Salaam on the Tanzanian coast to the Copperbelt region of Zambia, was instrumental in fostering one of the most sweeping development transitions in postcolonial Africa. Built during the height of the Cold War, the railway was intended to redirect the mineral wealth of the interior away from routes through South Africa and Rhodesia. Rebuffed by Western aid agencies, newly independent Tanzania and Zambia accepted help from China to construct what would become one of Africa's most vital transportation corridors. The book follows the railroad from design and construction to its daily use as a vital means for moving villagers and goods. It tells a story of how transnational interests contributed to environmental change, population movements, and the rise of local and regional enterprise.

Besieged and fought over fourteen times throughout its history, Jebel-Tarik, or Tarik’s Hill – named after an eighth-century Muslim invader – came to be known as the Rock of Gibraltar. This strategically located fortress controls the trade routes between Europe and North Africa, linking the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Its possession can dictate the flow of commerce and industry in this volatile region. In a bid to expel the British, King Carlos of Spain allies with the French. Meanwhile, two young farm lads from Lancashire embark on separate journeys that lead them to converge on this contested ground, each playing a role in the unfolding drama. This is the story of the last great siege of Gibraltar, detailing the armies and navies involved and the heroic actions of soldiers and sailors on both sides. Who will prevail: Britain or Spain?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lati knew his stuff and before the sun was high we were on the trail of a small herd. These elephant had fed into thick thorn scrub. We could hear them up ahead, close, but we couldn't see them as visibility was close to nil. I reached for some dirt to sift through my fingers and track the breezes. The elephant were almost stationary, languidly browsing. Judging from the contented purring of their stomachs, they had no idea we were there. We inched closer, the heat and the tension oppressive. Twenty yards; ten yards; ten feet. We could see them, but couldn't make out one end from the other, nor could we see any ivory. Big gray slabs of wrinkled hide was all that was discernable, and even that seemed to pulse and dance out of focus in the heat and thorn. Lati touched my shoulder, motioning to back off. At mid-day the breeze was bound to give us away. We backpedaled, guns ready...." The countries of East Africa were getting independence in the 1960's and the Teachers of East Africa Program, run by Columbia University, was one vehicle used to expand the staffing of the secondary schools so these countries could quickly muster the manpower necessary to run their own affairs. I was fortunate enough to be selected as one of the teachers, and this book is the story of my four years spent in Tanzania: teaching, hunting and touring. In the process I had many wonderful experiences with the people, some close calls with the elephants, climbed an active volcano, presided over a polling station in the first Presidential election in Tanzania, and hunted with ear gatherers. I tried to skim Dan's book after we returned from Africa. But it's not the sort of piece you should skim. I really enjoyed all of it, but especially the writer's voice and consciousness -- young, male, enthusiastic, brash, reflective, smart, brave, appreciative and oh so full of life! I loved it! Dr. Rudy Martin, retired, Evergreen State College, Olympia, Washington. I want to add that Dan's writing brought back for me the absolute beauty and wonder of East Africa. Dr. Gail Martin, retired Antioch University, Seattle, Washington
