Book Synopsis Cultures of Migration by : Jeffrey H. Cohen
Download or read book Cultures of Migration written by Jeffrey H. Cohen and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the globe, people leave their homes to better themselves, to satisfy needs, and to care for their families. They also migrate to escape undesirable conditions, ranging from a lack of economic opportunities to violent conflicts at home or in the community. Most studies of migration have analyzed the topic at either the macro level of national and global economic and political forces, or the micro level of the psychology of individual migrants. Few studies have examined the "culture of migration"—that is, the cultural beliefs and social patterns that influence people to move. Cultures of Migration combines anthropological and geographical sensibilities, as well as sociological and economic models, to explore the household-level decision-making process that prompts migration. The authors draw their examples not only from their previous studies of Mexican Oaxacans and Turkish Kurds but also from migrants from Europe, sub-Saharan Africa, the Pacific, and many parts of Asia. They examine social, economic, and political factors that can induce a household to decide to send members abroad, along with the cultural beliefs and traditions that can limit migration. The authors look at both transnational and internal migrations, and at shorter- and longer-term stays in the receiving location. They also consider the effect that migration has on those who remain behind. The authors' "culture of migration" model adds an important new dimension to our understanding of the cultural beliefs and social patterns associated with migration and will help specialists better respond to increasing human mobility.
Book Synopsis Gallup World Poll by : International Court of Justice
Download or read book Gallup World Poll written by International Court of Justice and published by United Nations. This book was released on 2011-06-15 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Many Faces of Global Migration report is an introduction to what Gallup has unearthed by asking migrants and potential migrants worldwide about their lives. The data presented in this report are based on Gallup’s ongoing World Poll surveys in more than 150 countries, territories and regions and more than 750,000 interviews since 2005. As such, these findings provide an unprecedented look at the different push-and-pull factors that influence migration, the experiences of those who desire to migrate to other countries permanently or temporarily for work, those who are planning to go, those who are preparing to go, those who have already left, and those who have returned home – and what this means for governments, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders.
Book Synopsis Geographies of Migration by : Richard Wright
Download or read book Geographies of Migration written by Richard Wright and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migration is an enormously broad topic of academic enquiry engaging researchers from many different social science disciplines. A wide variety of contributors from across the globe capture some of the methodological and conceptual range of migration research in the discipline of Geography today. This volume covers a large area geographically and in the expanse of subject areas involved: eighteen chapters investigate migration from, to, or within at least fifteen countries, with several sections spanning multiple places and scales. Many chapters are deeply concerned with vulnerable populations, which is not only a characteristic of much immigration scholarship but also one that connects with other areas of geography. The study of geographical assertions of sovereign power via the discourses of disorder, chaos, and crisis, shows that in these transnational times, national power is being violently reasserted, on, within, and beyond international borders. Other important topics covered include migration and climate change, "illegality", security, government policy, labor, family, and sexual orientation. This book was previously published as a special issue of Annals of the Association of American Geographers.
Book Synopsis Migration and Transnational Social Spaces by : Ludger Pries
Download or read book Migration and Transnational Social Spaces written by Ludger Pries and published by Ashgate Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although globalisation brings work to (some) places all over the world, the growing international mobility of workers (and refugees) will be one of the strongest social and political challenges at the end of this century. At the same time and in part originated by globalisation and transnational migration, there is emerging a qualitative new social reality of 'transnational social spaces' built by pluri-locally spanned social institutions, life trajectories and the biographical projects in specific institutional settings and material infrastructures. This volume presents conceptual frameworks and empirical studies of transnational migration processes and the emergence of pluri-social transnational social spaces.
Book Synopsis Mapping Migration, Identity, and Space by : Tabea Linhard
Download or read book Mapping Migration, Identity, and Space written by Tabea Linhard and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-14 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary collection of essays focuses on the ways in which movements of people across natural, political, and cultural boundaries shape identities that are inexorably linked to the geographical space that individuals on the move cross, inhabit, and leave behind. As conflicts over identities and space continue to erupt on a regular basis, this book reads the relationship between migration, identity, and space from a fresh and innovative perspective.
