Book excerpt: Jake's tale is based on the true story of a baby bird who accidentally fell into the care of female prisoners in a small Virginia town. His companionship provided them with direct contact to Nature herself where there was none other. He brought with him a message of hope: There is no separation. Birds of a feather flock together. Even when we ache at the anguish and grief of loving from a distance, love knows no bounds. It reaches everyone, even those otherwise disregarded. It is the do-or-die moments that make us or break us. Jake the Jail Bird comforts those who have experienced loss and motivates those who have taken a fall. It poses the question--How will you bounce back? Will you use your voice to activate the song that is your signature? Will you choose to support those who are knocked down and provide care to them from a distance? Will you be like Jake, who acknowledges the light in everyone, ignores his inner saboteur and soars to greater heights?

With primary research based on files and session logs from record companies, interviews with surviving musicians, as well as the 200,000 recordings archived at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum's Frist Library and Archives, this notable work is the first compendium to accurately report the key details behind all the recording sessions of country music during the pre-World War II era. This discography documents--in alphabetical order by artist--every commercial country music recording, including unreleased sides, and indicates, as completely as possible, the musicians playing at every session, as well as instrumentation. This massive undertaking encompasses 2,500 artists, 5,000 session musicians, and 10,000 songs. Summary histories of each key record company are also provided, along with a bibliography. The discography includes indexes to all song titles and musicians listed.

Book excerpt: Shaped by the unique stories of my time in federal custody, the JailBird Diet takes the reader into the world of incarceration that challenges the mind, body, and spirit at every turn. Out of the “shock and awful” of prison’s daily rituals comes a radical life change: the cleansing regimens, “superfoods,” and feeding disciplines I used to confront this new world and achieve radical weight loss. JailBird defines the tools of my diet journey that drove my 100 pound weight loss and shaped a new me. Based on the food and activity logs I kept in my daily prison journal, the JailBird Diet also provides a week-by-week story of the journey from my first day of surrender to the last days when the pandemic and solitary confinement threatened to leave me just pounds from my weight goal. In so doing, it provides the tools to replicate this kind of weight loss in the free world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the adventure written in this book, really occurred. After slavery was abolished, many Negroes joined up to fight with the Union army to help win the war over slavery. At first, they were not accepted, but later at the loss of many white soldiers, the Negroes were allowed to join the army, but only in a segregated regiment called the colored troops. After the Civil War was won, the colored calvary was born. They were called the 9th and 10th calvary of the United States Army. They fought Indians, chased outlaws, and escorted settlers across the plains. The colored calvary was given tough and dangerous assignments; but they fought magnificently and won every fight they were engaged in; with few or no casualties. The colored troops were very skillful and courageous; the Indians respected them as brave fearless warriors. They were given the name Buffalo Soldiers, because the buffalo is sacred and highly respected in the Indian Nation. Also, the Indians thought the Negroes hair was similar to the kinky, curly hair of the buffalo. The Seminole Negro Indians were the best scouts and trackers in the country, and many were drafted into the Army. It is recorded that many Negro soldiers were decorated highly for bravery, and received the Congressional Medal of Honor. In 1847, Jacob Washington was born a slave and was freed during the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. At the age of sixteen, Jacob left the plantation and traveled west to Texas, where he fulfilled his dream as a cowboy. Jacob got a job on the Circle (G) Ranch, working for Bill Goodman as a wrangler. Jacob changed his name to Jake, and received lots of experience. He helped push cattle northward up the Chisholm Trail into Oklahoma (Indian Territory) and on into Abilene and Dodge City, Kansas.

Book excerpt: A WASHINGTON POST NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR • Alan Lightman’s grandfather M.A. was the family’s undisputed patriarch. It was his movie theater empire that catapulted the Lightmans, a Hungarian Jewish immigrant family, to prominence in the South; his triumphs that would both galvanize and paralyze his descendants. In this evocative personal history, the author chronicles his return to Memphis and the stifling home he had been so eager to flee forty years earlier. As aging uncles and aunts retell old stories, Alan finds himself reconsidering long-held beliefs about his larger-than-life grandfather and his quiet, inscrutable father. The result is an unforgettable family saga set against the pulsing backdrop of Memphis—its country clubs and juke joints, its rhythm and blues, its segregated movie theaters, its barbecue and pecan pie—including encounters with Elvis, Martin Luther King Jr., and E. H. “Boss” Crump. Both intensely personal and quintessentially American, Screening Room finely explores the tricks of light that can make—and unmake—a man and his myth. (With black-and-white illustrations throughout.)

Book excerpt: First published in 1949 (this edition in 1968), this book is a dictionary of the past, exploring the language of the criminal and near-criminal worlds. It includes entries from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa, as well as from Britain and America and offers a fascinating and unique study of language. The book provides an invaluable insight into social history, with the British vocabulary dating back to the 16th century and the American to the late 18th century. Each entry comes complete with the approximate date of origin, the etymology for each word, and a note of the milieu in which the expression arose.
