Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two fictional characters, Jake and Duke, engage in a verbal joust regarding the supposed problems caused by gays, criminals, welfare, and women. Jake's suggestions to deal with these problems are to get laws passed which would allow the authorities an option in dealing with rapists, to execute gangbangers convicted of murder after giving them just one legal appeal, to give no child support to unmarried mothers, to allow Puerto Rico to end its ties with the United States and for them to become partners with South America. Jake would have laws passed to keep the United States an English speaking country by ending all bilingual programs, and to hold the Mexican government liable for all the medical bills generated by Mexican illegals which the hospitals in the Southwest have to absorb. He would have the United States pay the Mexican government room and board to house American prisoners so the taxpayers won't be obliged to construct new jails at an enormous cost. He would have a law passed to make it mandatory for a woman who has had an abortion to put a small cross on her forehead for each abortion, using permanent cosmetics. He would have the authorities turn convicted drug dealers into drug addicts so they could feel the pain they cause to the users. Jake's off-the-wall suggestions are countered by his long time friend, Duke, who suggests more humane treatment for those in need, instead of the barbaric proposals made by Jake.

Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller! A brilliantly modern take on Jewish culinary traditions for a new generation of readers, from a bright new star in the culinary world. When you think of Jewish food, a few classics come to mind: chicken soup with matzo balls, challah, maybe a babka if you’re feeling adventurous. But as food writer and nice Jewish boy Jake Cohen demonstrates in this stunning debut cookbook, Jewish food can be so much more. In Jew-ish, he reinvents the food of his Ashkenazi heritage and draws inspiration from his husband’s Persian-Iraqi traditions to offer recipes that are modern, fresh, and enticing for a whole new generation of readers. Imagine the components of an everything bagel wrapped into a flaky galette latkes dyed vibrant yellow with saffron for a Persian spin on the potato pancake, best-ever hybrid desserts like Macaroon Brownies and Pumpkin Spice Babka! Jew-ish features elevated, yet approachable classics along with innovative creations, such as: Jake’s Perfect Challah Roasted Tomato Brisket Short Rib Cholent Iraqi Beet Kubbeh Soup Cacio e Pepe Rugelach Sabich Bagel Sandwiches, and Matzo Tiramisu. Jew-ish is a brilliant collection of delicious recipes, but it’s much more than that. As Jake reconciles ancient traditions with our modern times, his recipes become a celebration of a rich and vibrant history, a love story of blending cultures, and an invitation to gather around the table and create new memories with family, friends, and loved ones.

Book excerpt: Emma Stevens still lives with the guilt of an impossible decision from her past: being forced to choose which of her young siblings to save in the fire that decimated their childhood home. To this day, she’s never stopped thinking about the boy next door who’d dragged her to safety that night. Or the fact that he’d been the one to cause the fire in the first place… Jake Rowan may not have been able to save Emma’s little brother all those years ago, but he was able to save his own brother. By taking the fall for the accidental fire he’d had nothing to do with, and serving out his sentence in juvie, Jake managed to keep his older brother out of prison. At the cost of his own future…and the girl of his dreams. Now, fourteen years later, Jake finds himself on Emma’s doorstep once again. Not to save her life this time, but to repair it—along with her heart—if she’ll let him. Previously published by Montlake Romance (c) 2017.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do race and nature work as terrains of power? From eighteenth-century claims that climate determined character to twentieth-century medical debates about the racial dimensions of genetic disease, concepts of race and nature are integrally connected, woven into notions of body, landscape, and nation. Yet rarely are these complex entanglements explored in relation to the contemporary cultural politics of difference. This volume takes up that challenge. Distinguished contributors chart the traffic between race and nature across sites including rainforests, colonies, and courtrooms. Synthesizing a number of fields—anthropology, cultural studies, and critical race, feminist, and postcolonial theory—this collection analyzes diverse historical, cultural, and spatial locations. Contributors draw on thinkers such as Fanon, Foucault, and Gramsci to investigate themes ranging from exclusionary notions of whiteness and wilderness in North America to linguistic purity in Germany. Some essayists focus on the racialized violence of imperial rule and evolutionary science and the biopolitics of race and class in the Guatemalan civil war. Others examine how race and nature are fused in biogenetic discourse—in the emergence of “racial diseases” such as sickle cell anemia, in a case of mistaken in vitro fertilization in which a white couple gave birth to a black child, and even in the world of North American dog breeding. Several essays tackle the politics of representation surrounding environmental justice movements, transnational sex tourism, and indigenous struggles for land and resource rights in Indonesia and Brazil. Contributors. Bruce Braun, Giovanna Di Chiro, Paul Gilroy, Steven Gregory, Donna Haraway, Jake Kosek, Tania Murray Li, Uli Linke, Zine Magubane, Donald S. Moore, Diane Nelson, Anand Pandian, Alcida Rita Ramos, Keith Wailoo, Robyn Wiegman

Book excerpt: From a Newbery Honor author, a boy loans his dog to the US Army during World War II in this “incisive tale of loyalty, patriotism, sacrifice and bravery” (Publishers Weekly). Hanson is determined to do his part to help his family and his country, even if it means giving up his beloved German shepherd, Duke. Hoping to help end the war and bring his dad home faster, Hobie decides to donate Duke to Dogs for Defense, an organization that urges Americans to “loan” their pets to the military to act as sentries, mine sniffers, and patrol dogs. Hobie immediately regrets his decision and tries everything he can to get Duke back, even jeopardizing his friendship with the new boy at school. But when his father is taken prisoner by the Germans, Hobie realizes he must let Duke go and reach deep within himself to be brave. Will Hobie ever see Duke, or his father, again? Will life ever be the same? “Exceptionally well-crafted and emotionally authentic.” —Kirkus Reviews
