Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to Rikers Island and Bellevue Hospital Prison ward for the criminally insane where all problems can be solved with a certain degree of violence. As a Jailhouse Therapist for over thirty years, I have seen and experienced firsthand violence that the average civilian cannot even imagine. It is a catastrophic assault on the human psyche which boggles the mind. I am leery of my surroundings when locked down with forty-seven criminally insane individuals, but I am not fearful. Maybe I’m stupid, and I don’t know it. I have learned to listen, respect, and look these individuals straight in their eyes with no fear. These individuals cherish respect above anything else. Money, women, and drugs are abstract compared to the concept of respect. Come visit Rikers Island and Bellevue’s Forensic Unit and see for yourself with the jailhouse therapist how these psychotic individuals function as they face twenty-five years or a life sentence for murdering their parents, kidnapping, robbing banks, or being stick-up artists and gang bangers. Walk through this New York City county jail in Jailhouse Therapist.

Book Synopsis How Offenders Transform Their Lives by : Bonita Veysey
Download or read book How Offenders Transform Their Lives written by Bonita Veysey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when the scale of imprisonment in the United States has reached a historic high, researchers estimate that more than 600,000 individuals a year are released from prison to return to their home communities. These individuals have serious needs, such as finding employment and housing, reuniting with family members, and obtaining healthcare and treatment for alcohol and substance abuse problems. While research in this area has stressed these aspects of the transition from prison, a less explored area of research considers the role of internal identity shifts from that of an offender to one of citizen, and how this creates the conditions for desistance from criminal behavior both within the confines of a correctional facility and in the reentry process. This book presents a series of studies (mostly qualitative) that investigate individual identity transformation from offender status to pro-social, non-offending roles. Moreover, the work in this volume highlights the perspectives of the men and women who are current or formerly incarcerated people. Each piece provides an empirical analysis of the interaction between current or former prisoners and innovative pro-social programs and networks, which are grounded in the most current theoretical work about individual transformation and change. This book will be of interest to undergraduates, postgraduates, researchers and lecturers in all fields within the social sciences, but especially criminology and criminal justice and sociology and social work/welfare.

Book Synopsis Violent States and Creative States (Volume 2) by : John Adlam
Download or read book Violent States and Creative States (Volume 2) written by John Adlam and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a provocative collection exploring the different types of violence and how they relate to one another, examined through the integration of several disciplines, including forensic psychotherapy, psychiatry, sociology, psychosocial studies and political science. By examining the 'violent states' of mind behind specific forms of violence and the social and societal contexts in which an individual act of human violence takes place, the contributors reveal the dynamic forces and reasoning behind specific forms of violence including structural violence, and conceptualise the societal structures themselves as 'violent states'. Other research often stops short at examining the causes and risk factors for violence, without considering the opposite states that may not only mitigate, but allow for a different unfolding of individual and societal evolution. As a potential antidote to violence, the authors prescribe an understanding of these 'creative states' with their psychological origins, and their importance in human behaviour and meaning-seeking. Making a call to move beyond merely mitigating violence to the opposite direction of fostering creative potential, this book is foundational in its capacity to cultivate social consciousness and effect positive change in areas of governance, policy-making, and collective responsibility. Volume 2: Human Violence and Creative Humanity explores violent states of mind, behavioural or subjective, interpersonal violence (including self-injury) and the fine distinctions between violent and creative states of mind.

These pieces are instructive and provide practical, transferable examples of how people have approached these challenges. It highlights examples of leading practice in the field and illustrates ethical approaches to contemporary collecting as work in this area progresses and our conversations about it advance. Book Synopsis Trauma-Organized Systems by : Arnon Bentovim
Download or read book Trauma-Organized Systems written by Arnon Bentovim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-26 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the experience of individuals who have been abused or who have abused others, but it also traces the way an abusive experience can organize a family or professional system so that changes are difficult to achieve. The author has been in the forefront of the child abuse field for many years, and he discusses in this volume the way his thinking has changed to incorporate the ideas from the feminist movement and the constructionist family therapists. He looks at the way victimizing actions and the traumatic effects of abuse combine to create a trauma-organized system, which includes the individual, the family, the professional helpers, the community, and the cultural values. The author describes the characteristics of these systems and a diagnostic procedure to help the workers plan the treatment.
Book Synopsis Social Innovation by : Helmut Anheier
Download or read book Social Innovation written by Helmut Anheier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-29 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Innovation: Comparative Perspectives investigates socio-economic impact. Since it is hard to establish causality and to measure social properties when investigating impact, especially at the level of society, the book narrows down impact to one priority aspect: social innovation – understood as organizations’ capacity to generate novel ideas, ways and means of doing things, of addressing public and social problems of many kinds. This volume’s primary assertion is that the Third Sector, specifically through stimulating civic involvement, is best placed to produce social innovation, outperforming business firms and state agencies in this regard. By investigating actor contributions to social innovation across seven fields of activity, Social innovation: Comparative Perspectives develops our understanding of why and how the Third Sector is central to functioning, cohesive and viable societies. This volume is based on contributions of the project "ITSSOIN – Impact of the Third Sector as Social Innovation" funded by the European Commission under the 7th framework programme. It will be of insight across disciplines, in particular to the growing social innovation community, innovation researchers more generally and to non-profit scholars. The practical relevance of the book will be of interest to European and national policy makers and practitioners across different sectors.

Book Synopsis The Internal and External Worlds of Children and Adolescents by : Lesley Day
Download or read book The Internal and External Worlds of Children and Adolescents written by Lesley Day and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of child and adolescent psychotherapy is still relatively young and its short history has resulted in a paucity of mental health services for this neglected group. There is a distinct lack of research, evidence and treatment facilities, and yet in order to produce mentally healthy, undamaged adults of the future, this must surely be one area to concentrate resources on. The Cassel Hospital, and this book in particular, seek to redress the balance, and consequently, the chapters in this book follow a diverse path, on subjects ranging from Munchhausen Syndrome by proxy, to abuse within the home, relations within families and borderline adolescents. Various clinical cases are described in this much-needed volume that invites the reader to experience and learn from the life in a hospital that is often seen as the "last resort" of treatment for many children and adolescents. The Internal and External Worlds of Children and Adolescents provides a thoughtful perspective on mental health services for one of the most neglected groups in society - our children and adolescents.
