Book Synopsis Jack Wilson ́s Waltz by : John Gossage
Download or read book Jack Wilson ́s Waltz written by John Gossage and published by Steidl. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jack Wilson's Waltz is, in the words of its author, a book "with a particular context, of photographs to settle the feeling that I did not understand about my home. To do that I set out, starting in 2003, to see what clarity my pictures might bring." And so came into being these photos of scenes, things, minor events and the look in the eyes of the young, all taken in everyday non-iconic places throughout John Gossage's (born 1946) travels across America. Gossage's ongoing look at his country within these pages is like a dance: rhythmic, redeeming, restorative, intuitive; but tentatively hopeful. "I would like to believe all of it," he writes, "that we will be saved, but on Connecticut Avenue there is graffiti that says 'Where is Lee Harvey Oswald when we need him?' All I can hear is the faint echoing gun shots coming from Wounded Knee."
Book Synopsis The Jazz Pilgrimage of Gerald Wilson by : Steven Loza
Download or read book The Jazz Pilgrimage of Gerald Wilson written by Steven Loza and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jazz great Gerald Wilson (1918-2014), born in Shelby, Mississippi, left a global legacy of paramount significance through his progressive musical ideas and his orchestra's consistent influence on international jazz. Aided greatly by interviews that bring Wilson's voice to the story, Steven Loza presents a perspective on what the musician and composer called his "jazz pilgrimage." Wilson uniquely adapted Latin influences into his jazz palette, incorporating many Cuban and Brazilian inflections as well as those of Mexican and Spanish styling. Throughout the book, Loza refers to Wilson's compositions and arrangements, including their historical contexts and motivations. Loza provides savvy musical readings and analysis of the repertoire. He concludes by reflecting upon Wilson's ideas on the place of jazz culture in America, its place in society and politics, its origins, and its future. With a foreword written by Wilson's son, Anthony, and such sources as essays, record notes, interviews, and Wilson's own reflections, the biography represents the artist's ideas with all their philosophical, historical, and cultural dimensions. Beyond merely documenting Wilson's many awards and recognitions, this book ushers readers into the heart and soul of a jazz creator. Wilson emerges a unique and proud African American artist whose tunes became a mosaic of the world.

Book Synopsis Fort Meade and the Black Hills by : Robert Lee
Download or read book Fort Meade and the Black Hills written by Robert Lee and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1991-05-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fort Meade was the home of the famous Seventh Cavalry after its ignominious defeat in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Troops from Fort Meade played a pivotal role in the events that led to the tragedy at Wounded Knee in 1890. It was the scene of imprisonment of Ute Indians who made the mistake of interpreting their new citizenship status as freedom from government control. The fort survived the mechanization of the horse cavalry, aided the record-breaking Stratosphere Balloon flight of 1935, and became a training site for the nation’s first airborne troops. Fort Meade existed for sixty-six years, from 1878 to 1944. Robert Lee examines the strategic importance of its location on the northern edge of the Black Hills and the role it played in the settlement of the region, as well as the role played by the citizens of Sturgis in keeping it alive. One of the chief delights of Fort Meade and the Black Hills is a gallery of characters including the unfortunate Major Marcus Reno, the beautiful and fatal Ella Sturgis, and the cigar-smoking Poker Alice Tubbs. They, and events scaled to their larger-than-life size, are part of this long overdue story of Fort Meade.

Download or read book Washington Information Directory 2019-2020 written by CQ Press, and published by CQ Press. This book was released on 2019-07-03 with total page 1123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Washington Information Directory is the essential one-stop source for information on U.S. governmental and nongovernmental agencies and organizations. This thoroughly researched guide provides capsule descriptions that help users quickly and easily find the right person at the right organization. The Washington Information Directory offers three easy ways to find information: by name, by organization, and through detailed subject indexes. Although it is a "directory, the volume is topically organized, and within the taxonomic structure the relevant organizations are listed not only with contact information but with a brief paragraph describing what the organization (whether government or nongovernmental) does related to that topic. It is focused on Washington—in order to be listed, an organization must have an office in the Washington metropolitan area. These descriptions are not boilerplate advertising material from the organizations; rather, they are hand-crafted by a talented freelance research team. In addition, the Washington Information Directory pulls together 55 organization charts for federal agencies, congressional resources related to each chapter topic, hotline and contact information for various specific areas of interest (from Food Safety Resources to internships in Washington), and an extensive list of active congressional caucuses and contact details. It has two appendices, one with thorough information on congresspersons and committees, and the second with governors and embassies. With more than 10,000 listing and coverage of the new presidential administration, the 2019–2020 Edition features contact information for the following: • 116th Congress and federal agencies • Nongovernmental organizations • Policy groups, foundations, and institutions • Governors and other state officials • U.S. ambassadors and foreign diplomats • Congressional caucuses
