Book excerpt: Jack Hibberd is an Australian playwright and doctor. His career spans twenty years, beginning with the revival of indigenous Australian theatre in the late 1960's. His work is characterised by great comic invention and an on-going interest in exploring the form of theatre. This is evident in early plays like White With Wire Wheels (1967) and Dimboola (1969), his wedding play which is the most-produced Australian play ever and which has also received a number of overseas productions. A Stretch of the Imagination (1972) and A Toast to MeIba (1974) are also highly original, as is his adaptation of Gogol's The Overcoat(1978). For Hibberd, the theatre itself is a metaphor for life - best expressed in his monodramas, Mothballs (1981) and Lavender Bags (1983). Paul McGillick is theatre critic for The Australian Financial Review and a contributor to New Theatre Australia. He is also a playwright who has written plays and features for radio in particular. He has written extensively on the work of Jack Hibberd.

Book excerpt: John Romeril has been one of the most prolific contributors to Australian theatre in the last twenty years. But since until recently few of his plays have been published, he has had inadequate recognition. As a founding member of the APG he was 'in at the start' of the revival of the so-called New Wave in Australian drama in the sixties. Romeril continues to be a leading influence in contemporary theatre. His work ranges from the well-known The Floating World (1974) to such recent successes as the community based play The Kelly Dance (1984), the mainstream drama Lost Weekend (1989) and the political play Black Cargo (1991). John Romeril is truly the great survivor of modern Australian theatre.

Book excerpt: In the years since the Second World War, Australia has seen a period of literary creativity which outshines any earlier period in the nation's literary history. This creativity has its beginnings in the arguments and alignments which emerged at the end of the War, and the changes in perceptions of art and society which occurred during the fifties and early sixties. A Question of Commitment examines the attitudes of writers as diverse as James McAuley, Frank Hardy, Judith Wright, Patrick White and A. D. Hope, as they responded to a changing Australian society during the postwar years. Through their work and that of many others, it considers the debates about literary nationalism, the artistic politics of the Cold War, the threat of technology to art in the Atomic Age, and the nature of the writer's role in the new society. It documents the way in which the political commitments of some writers and the resistance to commitment of others were challenged by political and social changes of the late fifties. Susan McKernan's lively exploration of Australia's writers in a time of innovation provides the reader with the context needed to understand the creative choices they made and, in so doing, introduces wider intellectual and cultural issues which remain relevant to this day.

Book excerpt: Claire Dobbin, Helen Garner, Evelyn Krape, Jude Kuring and Yvonne Marini mocked the ocker character beloved by Pram Factory playwrights, and performed monologues about men, sex, and how they felt "as a woman". Directed by Kerry Dwyer and produced by the Carlton Women's Liberation group, the play's frank revelations stunned audiences and shocked the Pram Factory world. Set against a backdrop of moratorium marches, inner-city cafes and share houses, and the rising tide of sexual liberation and countercultural movements, Kath Kenny uses interviews and archival material to tell the story of Betty Can Jump. On the 50th anniversary of this ground-breaking play, she considers its ongoing impact on Australian culture, and asks why the great cultural renaissance of women's liberation has been largely forgotten. She sets out her stake in this story, as a theatre reviewer today and as a child born into the revolutionary early 1970s. And she asks why feminism keeps getting stuck in mother-daughter battles, rethinking her own experience as a young feminist who clashed with Garner over the publication of The First Stone.
