Book excerpt: To accompany the exhibition in the Austrian Pavilion for the 55th Biennale di Venezia, a landmark publication titled "Austria and the Venice Biennale 1895-2013" will be launched in May 2013. This scholarly, 400-page publication will present, for the first time, a comprehensive overview of each individual exhibition, with the help of previously unpublished photographs, plans and correspondence drawn from public and private archives in several different countries. The list of artists presented by Austria at the Venice Biennale over the last 120 years includes most, if not all, of the leading figures of its cultural avantgarde: from Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka, Hermann Nitsch and Arnulf Rainer to VALIE EXPORT, Maria Lassnig and Franz West.
Book Synopsis Murano, Island of Glass by : Attilia Dorigato
Download or read book Murano, Island of Glass written by Attilia Dorigato and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murano owes its worldwide fame to blown glass. The works created by the skillful hands of the island's master glassblowers have been exported East and West for centuries now, providing some of the most exquisite decorations for royal palaces and princely homes, and arousing the wonder and delight of travellers, poets and writers throughout the ages. Attilia Dorigato, Director of the Murano Glass Museum, traces all the key stages in the development of this age-old craft. Running from the Middle Ages to the heart of the contemporary world, her study focuses particular attention on the master glass-makers of the late part of the twentieth century. This up-to-date survey draws on an extraordinary range of photographs, some of them being published for the first time, and constitutes a fundamental work for anyone who wishes to understand the history of glass. Special illustrated appendices are included to reveal the techniques and secrets of this fascinating craft; what tools the master glassblowers use;
Book Synopsis Baroquemania by : Laura Moure Cecchini
Download or read book Baroquemania written by Laura Moure Cecchini and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baroquemania explores the intersections of art, architecture and criticism to show how reimagining the Baroque helped craft a distinctively Italian approach to modern art. Offering a bold reassessment of post-unification visual culture, the book examines a wide variety of media and ideologically charged discourses on the Baroque, both inside and outside the academy. Key episodes in the modern afterlife of the Baroque are addressed, notably the Decadentist interpretation of Gianlorenzo Bernini, the 1911 universal fairs in Turin and Rome, Roberto Longhi’s historically grounded view of Futurism, architectural projects in Fascist Rome and the interwar reception of Adolfo Wildt and Lucio Fontana’s sculpture. Featuring a wealth of visual materials, Baroquemania offers a fresh look at a central aspect of Italy's modern art.

Book Synopsis Symbolism, Its Origins and Its Consequences by : Rosina Neginsky
Download or read book Symbolism, Its Origins and Its Consequences written by Rosina Neginsky and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of the symbol is at the root of the Symbolist movement, but this symbol is different from the way it was used and understood in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. In the Symbolist movement, a symbol is not an allegory. The Belgian writer Maurice Maeterlinck defined its essence in an article that appeared on April 24, 1887, in L’Art moderne. He wrote that the notion of a symbol in the Symbolist movement is the opposite of the notion of the symbol in classical usage: instead of going from the abstract to the concrete (Venus, incarnated in the statue, represents love), it goes from the concrete to the abstract, from “what is seen, heard, felt, tasted, and sensed to the evocation of the idea.” This volume attempts to give a glimpse into the power of the Symbolist movement and the nature of its fundamental and interdisciplinary role in the evolution of art and literature of the twentieth century. It records the studies of a group of scholars, who met and discussed these topics together for the first time in 2009. While illuminating the specificity of Symbolism in art, architecture and literature in different European countries, these articles also demonstrate the crucial role of French Symbolism in the development of the international Symbolist movement. The authors hope that an expanding group, a society of Art, Literature and Music in Symbolism and Decadence (ALMSD), born out of the first meeting, will continue to further this discussion at future conferences and in the printed conference proceedings.

Book Synopsis Italian Venice by : R. J. B. Bosworth
Download or read book Italian Venice written by R. J. B. Bosworth and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this elegant book Richard Bosworth explores Venice—not the glorious Venice of the Venetian Republic, but from the fall of the Republic in 1797 and the Risorgimento up through the present day. Bosworth looks at the glamour and squalor of the belle époque and the dark underbelly of modernization, the two world wars, and the far-reaching oppressions of the fascist regime, through to the “Disneylandification” of Venice and the tourist boom, the worldwide attention of the biennale and film festival, and current threats of subsidence and flooding posed by global warming. He draws out major themes—the increasingly anachronistic but deeply embedded Catholic Church, the two faces of modernization, consumerism versus culture. Bosworth interrogates not just Venice’s history but its meanings, and how the city’s past has been co-opted to suit present and sometimes ulterior aims. Venice, he shows, is a city where its histories as well as its waters ripple on the surface.
