Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second printing of the book first published in 1988. The first four chapters of the volume are based on lectures given by Stroock at MIT in 1987. They form an introduction to the basic ideas of the theory of large deviations and make a suitable package on which to base a semester-length course for advanced graduate students with a strong background in analysis and some probability theory. A large selection of exercises presents important material and many applications. The last two chapters present various non-uniform results (Chapter 5) and outline the analytic approach that allows one to test and compare techniques used in previous chapters (Chapter 6).

Book Synopsis Knots and Surfaces by : David W. Farmer
Download or read book Knots and Surfaces written by David W. Farmer and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1996 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most mathematics textbooks, the most exciting part of mathematics - the process of invention and discovery - is completely hidden from the student. The aim of Knots and Surfaces is to change all that. Knots and Surfaces guides the reader through Euler's formula, one and two-sided surfaces, and knot theory using games and examples. By means of a series of carefully selected tasks, this book leads the reader on to discover some real mathematics. There are no formulas to memorize; no procedures to follow. This book is a guide to the mathematics - it starts you in the right direction and brings you back if you stray too far. Discovery is left to you. This book is aimed at undergraduates and those with little background knowledge of mathematics.

Along the way, the structure theory of the compact semisimple Lie groups is exposed. This is aimed at research mathematicians and graduate students studying group theory.
Book Synopsis Affine and Projective Geometry by : M. K. Bennett
Download or read book Affine and Projective Geometry written by M. K. Bennett and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-02-14 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important new perspective on AFFINE AND PROJECTIVEGEOMETRY This innovative book treats math majors and math education studentsto a fresh look at affine and projective geometry from algebraic, synthetic, and lattice theoretic points of view. Affine and Projective Geometry comes complete with ninetyillustrations, and numerous examples and exercises, coveringmaterial for two semesters of upper-level undergraduatemathematics. The first part of the book deals with the correlationbetween synthetic geometry and linear algebra. In the second part, geometry is used to introduce lattice theory, and the bookculminates with the fundamental theorem of projectivegeometry. While emphasizing affine geometry and its basis in Euclideanconcepts, the book: * Builds an appreciation of the geometric nature of linear algebra * Expands students' understanding of abstract algebra with itsnontraditional, geometry-driven approach * Demonstrates how one branch of mathematics can be used to provetheorems in another * Provides opportunities for further investigation of mathematicsby various means, including historical references at the ends ofchapters Throughout, the text explores geometry's correlation to algebra inways that are meant to foster inquiry and develop mathematicalinsights whether or not one has a background in algebra. Theinsight offered is particularly important for prospective secondaryteachers who must major in the subject they teach to fulfill thelicensing requirements of many states. Affine and ProjectiveGeometry's broad scope and its communicative tone make it an idealchoice for all students and professionals who would like to furthertheir understanding of things mathematical.
Book Synopsis Groups and Symmetry: A Guide to Discovering Mathematics by : David W. Farmer
Download or read book Groups and Symmetry: A Guide to Discovering Mathematics written by David W. Farmer and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1996 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics is discovered by looking at examples, noticing patterns, making conjectures, and testing those conjectures. Once discovered, the final results get organized and put in textbooks. The details and the excitement of the discovery are lost. This book introduces the reader to the excitement of the original discovery. By means of a wide variety of tasks, readers are led to find interesting examples, notice patterns, devise rules to explain the patterns, and discover mathematics for themselves. The subject studied here is the mathematics behind the idea of symmetry, but the methods and ideas apply to all of mathematics. The only prerequisites are enthusiasm and a knowledge of basic high-school math. The book is only a guide. It will start you off in the right direction and bring you back if you stray too far. The excitement and the discovery are left to you.
Book Synopsis Sociology in Action by : Diane Symbaluk

Book excerpt: The essence of sociology lies in the sociological imagination. Sociology in Action: A Canadian Perspective, Third Edition, articulates the importance of developing a sociological imagination and highlights the tools that are necessary to develop that skill: empirical research methods that create verifiable knowledge, sociological theories that explain that knowledge, and critical thinking that enables us to evaluate and to extrapolate from that knowledge. By the time students have completed this text, they will be better equipped to engage in effective social action in the context of their families, communities, and professions, as well as in the context of larger social problems such as social inequality and environmental degradation. With their signature passion and Sociological Toolkit, Diane Symbaluk and Tami Bereska have created a text that will inspire 21st-century learners to become active and informed citizens.
Book Synopsis Mathematics of the 19th Century by : KOLMOGOROV
Download or read book Mathematics of the 19th Century written by KOLMOGOROV and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multi-authored effort, Mathematics of the nineteenth century (to be fol lowed by Mathematics of the twentieth century), is a sequel to the History of mathematics fram antiquity to the early nineteenth century, published in three 1 volumes from 1970 to 1972. For reasons explained below, our discussion of twentieth-century mathematics ends with the 1930s. Our general objectives are identical with those stated in the preface to the three-volume edition, i. e. , we consider the development of mathematics not simply as the process of perfecting concepts and techniques for studying real-world spatial forms and quantitative relationships but as a social process as weIl. Mathematical structures, once established, are capable of a certain degree of autonomous development. In the final analysis, however, such immanent mathematical evolution is conditioned by practical activity and is either self-directed or, as is most often the case, is determined by the needs of society. Proceeding from this premise, we intend, first, to unravel the forces that shape mathe matical progress. We examine the interaction of mathematics with the social structure, technology, the natural sciences, and philosophy. Throughan anal ysis of mathematical history proper, we hope to delineate the relationships among the various mathematical disciplines and to evaluate mathematical achievements in the light of the current state and future prospects of the science. The difficulties confronting us considerably exceeded those encountered in preparing the three-volume edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the lecture notes prepared for the AMS Short Course on Matrix Theory and Applications, held in Phoenix in January, 1989. Matrix theory continues to enjoy a renaissance that has accelerated in the past decade, in part because of stimulation from a variety of applications and considerable interplay with other parts of mathematics. In addition, the great increase in the number and vitality of specialists in the field has dispelled the popular misconception that the subject has been fully researched.
