Exam ples include the breaking of sea waves on a harbour wall, the transport of sloshing fluids in partly filled containers, and the design of micronozzles for high speed ink-jet printing. Apart from the intrinsic mathematical challenge in describing and solving the governing equations, there are usually important environmental, safety and engineering features which need to be analysed and controlled. A rich variety of techniques has been developed over the past two decades to facilitate this analysis; singular perturbations, dynamical systems, and the development of sophisticated numerical codes. The extreme and sometimes violent nature of some free surface flows taxes these methods to the limit. The work presented at the symposium addressed these limits and can be loosely classified into four areas: (i) Axisymmetric free surface flows. There are a variety of problems in the printing, glass, fertiliser and fine chemical industries in which threads of fluid are made and controlled. Presentations were made in the areas of pinch-off for inviscid and viscous threads of fluid, recoil effects after droplet formation and the control of instability by forced vibration. (ii) Dynamic wetting. The motion of three phase contact lines, which are formed at the junction between two fluids and a solid, plays an important role in fluid mechanics.

From a more practical point of view, there exist many applications that involve turbulent flow where the Reynolds numbers are extremely large. For example, large vehicles such as submarines and commercial transports operate at Reynolds 9 numbers based on length ofthe order oft0 , and industrial pipe flows cover a 7 very wide range of Reynolds numbers up to 10 • Many very important applications of high Reynolds number flow pertain to atmospheric and other geophysical flows where extremely high Reynolds numbers are the rule rather than the exception, and the understanding of climate changes and the prediction of destructive weather effects hinges to some extent on our appreciation ofhigh-Reynolds number turbulence behavior. The important effects of Reynolds number on turbulence has received a great deal of recent attention. The objective of the Symposium was to bring together many of the world's experts in this area to appraise the new experimental results, discuss new scaling laws and turbulence models, and to enhance our mutual understanding of turbulence.

A series of IUTAM symposia held over the last twenty five years at well-known Centres of research in the subject - Novosibirsk, Stuttgart, Toulouse, Sendai and Sedona (Arizona) - has proved to be a great catalyst which has given a boost to research and our understanding of the field. At this point of time, the field is changing significantly with several emerging directions. The sixth IUTAM meeting in the series, which was held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore, India, focused on the progress after the fifth meeting held at Sedona in 1999. The s- posium, which adhered to the IUTAM format of a single session, included seven invited lectures, fifty oral presentations and eight posters. During the course of the symposium, the following became evident. The area of laminar-turbulent transition has progressed considerably since 1999. Better theoretical tools, for handling nonlinearities as well as transient behaviour are now available. This is accompanied by an en- mous increase in the level of sophistication of both experiments and direct numerical simulations. The result has been that our understanding of the early stages of the transition process is now on much firmer footing and we are now able to study many aspects of the later stages of the transition process.

The Symposium was proposed in 1996, aiming at organizing concen trated discussions on current understanding of fluid turbulence with empha sis on the statistics and the underlying geometric structures. The decision of the General Assembly of International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) to accept the proposal was greeted with enthusiasm. Turbulence is often characterized as having the properties of mixing, inter mittency, non-Gaussian statistics, and so on. Interest is growing recently in how these properties are related to formation and evolution of struc tures. Note that the intermittency is meant for passive scalars as well as for turbulence velocity or rate of dissipation. There were eighty-eight participants in the Symposium. They came from thirteen countries, and fifty-seven papers were presented. The presenta tions comprised a wide variety of fundamental subjects of mathematics, statistical analyses, physical models as well as engineering applications. Among the subjects discussed are (a) Degree of self-similarity in cascade, (b) Fine-scale structures and degree of Markovian property in turbulence, (c) Dynamics of vorticity and rates of strain, (d) Statistics associated with vortex structures, (e) Topology, structures and statistics of passive scalar advection, (f) Partial differential equations governing PDFs of velocity in crements, (g) Thermal turbulences, (h) Channel and pipe flow turbulences, and others.

The acceptance of the proposal, forwarded by the Deutsches Komitee fiir Mechanik (DEKOMECH) signalized, that there was a need for discussing the topic chosen in the frame the IUTAM Symposia offer. Also the location of the symposium was suitably chosen: It was decided to hold the symposium at the RWTH Aachen, where, years ago, Theodore von Karman had worked on problems related to those to be discussed now anew. It was clear from the beginning of the planning, that the symposium could only be held in the von Karman-Auditorium ofthe Rheinisch-Westfalische Technische Hochschule Aachen, a building named after him. The symposium was jointly organized by the editors of this volume, strongly supported by the local organizing committee. The invitations of the scientific committee brought together scientists actively engaged in research on the dynamics of slender vortices. It was the aim of the committee to have the state of the art summarized and also to have the latest results of specific problems investigated communicated to the participants of the symposium. The topics chosen were asymptotic theories, numerical methods, vor tices in shear layers, interaction of vortices, vortex breakdown, vortex sound, and aircraft and helicopter vortices.

Theoretical SEA is form of modelling the vibrational and acoustical behaviour of complex mechanical systems which has undergone a long period of gestation before recent maturation into a widely used engineering design and analysis tool which is supported by a rapidly growing supply of commercial software. SEA also provides a framework for associated experimental measurement procedures, data analysis and interpretation. Under the guidance of the members of a distinguished International Scientific Committee, participants were individually invited from the broad spectrum of 'SEAfarers', including academics, consultants, industrial engineers, software developers and research students. The Symposium aimed to reflect the balance of world-wide activity in SEA, although some eminent members of the SEA community were, sadly, unable to attend. In particular, Professor Richard Lyon and Dr Gideon Maidanik, two of the principal originators of SEA, were sorely missed. This publication contains copies of all the papers presented to the Symposium together with a summary of the associated discussions which contains valuable comments upon the contents of the formal papers together with the views of participants on some fundamental issues which remain to be resolved.
