Book Synopsis Beothuk by : Christopher Patrick Aylward
Download or read book Beothuk written by Christopher Patrick Aylward and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The well-known story of the Beothuk is that they were an isolated people who, through conflict with Newfoundland settlers and Mi’kmaq, were made extinct in 1829. Narratives about the disappearance of the Beothuk and the reasons for their supposed extinction soon became entrenched in historical accounts and the popular imagination. Beothuk explores how the history of a people has been misrepresented by the stories of outsiders writing to serve their own interests – from Viking sagas to the accounts of European explorers to the work of early twentieth-century anthropologists. Drawing on narrative theory and the philosophy of history, Christopher Aylward lays bare the limitations of the accepted Beothuk story, which perpetuated but could never prove the notion of Beothuk extinction. Only with the integration of Indigenous perspectives, beginning in the 1920s, was this accepted story seriously questioned. With the accumulation of new sources and methods – archaeological evidence, previously unexplored British and French accounts, Mi’kmaq oral history, and the testimonies of Labrador Innu and Beothuk descendants – a new historical reality has emerged. Rigorous and compelling, Beothuk demonstrates the enduring power of stories to shape our understanding of the past and the impossibility of writing Indigenous history without Indigenous storytellers.

After two years of marching and fighting Confederate soldiers, Danny is discouraged and homesick and hopes to be heading home soon. But instead of going north, he is being led further south and further into enemy territory. While marching and fighting ever southward, they reach a small town in south Mississippi. Here Danny does something that goes against everything he has been taught. Something that burdens him with guilt. Guilt that plagues him until his death and beyond. Mortally wounded in a battle at the small town of Revoux, Louisiana, Danny is carried to an old hotel which is being used as a hospital. Unable to leave this earthly dwelling because of his guilt, Danny is destined to haunt the halls of Hotel Chalpella, until he can correct the crime he has committed. One hundred years later, a man with twin children moves to the grounds of the old hotel as a caretaker. Danny watches the twins and sees goodness in the children that might aid him in his salvation.
Download or read book La Petite Fadette written by George Sand and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in the French countryside of George Sand’s childhood and narrated in the unique voice of a Berrichon peasant, La Petite Fadette is a beloved 1848 novel about identical twin brothers and Fadette, the mysterious waif with whom they both fall in love. The brothers, Landry and Sylvinet, belong to a highly respected farm family. When young Landry meets Fadette, whose very name suggests that she is a witch, he is captivated by the girl despite her lowly status and disreputable family. Sylvinet soon follows suit. Fadette’s relationship with the twins defies the patriarchal norms of French society as well as the expectations of the village, resulting in a tale of love, courage, and clever strategy winning out over superstition and prejudice. Often regarded as a simple country tale, Sand’s novel is layered with meaning, including subtle nods to the burgeoning desire for political and sexual equality in nineteenth-century France. This thoughtful critical translation by Gretchen van Slyke brings the complexity of the original story to life. Her introduction explores the autobiographical and political dimensions of the novel, and her translation preserves the rustic charm and archaic flavor of Sand’s language. An invaluable contribution to French literary studies and nineteenth-century literature studies, this new edition ensures that La Petite Fadette will be read by generations to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An eloquent, honest tribute to a sports genius.” —Publishers Weekly, Best 100 Books of 2013 As the coach during professional football’s most storied era, Tom Landry transformed the gridiron from a no-holds-barred battlefield to the highly-technical chess match it is today. With his trademark fedora and stoic facade, he was a man of faith and few words, for twenty-nine years guiding “America’s Team” from laughingstock to well-oiled machine, with an unprecedented twenty consecutive winning seasons and two Super Bowl titles. Now, more than a decade after Landry’s death, acclaimed biographer Mark Ribowsky takes a fresh look at this misunderstood legend, telling us as much about our country’s obsession with football as about Landry himself, the likes of whom we’ll never see again.

Book excerpt: One the greatest NFL broadcasters distills the wisdom of two of the greatest coaches As both a tight end and a place kicker for the 1958 Giants (back when special teams were part of the defense), Pat Summerall was the only person to be coached by both Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry, the team's offensive and defensive coaches, respectively. In telling the story of that legendary season, which ended with the Giants losing to the Colts in the NFL championship game, Summerall explores the wisdom that was passed along to him that made him a better player, and later a better broadcaster and better a man. The wide range of lessons covers personal behavior (react like a football player; training doesn't end in training camp; don't dwell on your success), work relationships (the boss keeps time, they can get somebody who wants to play) and winning (believe in your heart that you'll win, try to win every game, but focus on one game at a time) The book also lays out the Lombardi Code (Speak Confidently, and Prepare) and the Landry Code (Faith, Family and Football) Summerall tells vivid and inspirational stories about the game on and off the field that bring the lessons to life
