Book Synopsis The Heart of Understanding by : Thich Nhat Hanh
Download or read book The Heart of Understanding written by Thich Nhat Hanh and published by Parallax Press. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprised of only 632 Chinese characters, the Heart Sutra is Buddhism in a nutshell. Despite its brevity, this powerful work covers more of the Buddha’s teachings than any other scripture, and its influence is more profound and wide-reaching than any other text in Buddhism. Thich Nhat Hanh’s translation and commentary is regarded as the most simple, clear, concise, and understandable available. He describes the sutra as “a precious gift to us, the gift of fearlessness," offering subtle and profound teachings on non-duality and the letting go of all preconceived notions, opinions, and attachments, thereby becoming open to all the wonders of our life. This completely revised edition celebrates the 20th anniversary of the first publication of a modern classic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the other passengers aboard a transatlantic ocean liner, Katharine Monahan might seem like a typical sixteen-year-old American girl on her way to study in a Junior-Year-Abroad program. What they don't know is that her family physician has given her only a year to live. Desperate to realize every dream she's ever had, she has left family, school, and friends in New Orleans to live in the only place she believes she truly belongs: Paris, France. But the Paris of 1986 proves not to be the Paris of Piaf, Chevalier, and Colette. Language and cultural barriers, hard as they may be, will prove the least of the crises she will face. Lonely and alienated in her newly adopted home, she finds solace and companionship with a congregation of expatriate American artists and misfits at Lost Generation Bookstore. Shadowed by the consciousness of her own mortality and driven by a panic-stricken desire to drink up as much experience as she can leads her into a number of bizarre relationships and even dangerous situations which challenge every moral, religious, and political belief she has ever held, but also expose the political and moral hypocrisy of those with whom she is involved. Among these is an expatriate American with heavy Marxist-Leninist leanings as well as a questionable past; a fashion designer with an equally questionable sexuality; a wealthy American businessman, who knows only how to wield power but is incapable of love, and a spoiled art student, whose immediate family prove to be a sample of French bourgeoisie life at its worst. Strengthened by her ordeals, she is suddenly overcome by a tragic new set of circumstances she cannot handle. Fleeing to the south of France, she is taken into the home of a wealthy Riviera couple, whose hospitality is inspired by motives less disinterested than they at first seem. A pilgrimage to Lourdes in the company of a kind yet worldly-wise young nun seems to promise a way out of her predicament. But upon her return to Paris, she encounters new pressures which eventually force her to make the most critical decision of her life: the choice between the ways of the world or the ways of the spirit.

Book Synopsis Return to the Caffe Cino by : Steve Susoyev
Download or read book Return to the Caffe Cino written by Steve Susoyev and published by Moving Finger Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RETURN TO THE CAFFE CINO gives a fresh, exciting portrait of the non-commercial NY theater scene in the 1960's. The scene is painted here by dozens of short essays by the artists that were a part of the creative fission that flared so brightly there and that still influences so much of today's theatre. The eyewitness stories are usually hysterically funny, filled with that sense of freedom that ignited a movement that continues today in small independent theaters. And the editors of the anthology have filled the pages with vintage pictures, including one of a fifteen-year-old Bernadette Peters getting her start at the Caffe Cino!
Book Synopsis Sally Mara's Intimate Diary by : Raymond Queneau
Download or read book Sally Mara's Intimate Diary written by Raymond Queneau and published by Deep Vellum Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sally Mara’s Intimate Diary, dating from 1950, is exceptional; a salacious, black humorous and meaningful story by the influential and erudite French novelist, Raymond Queneau. When ‘Sally Mara’ begins her diary in January 1934, she is 17 years old and lives with her mother, older brother and younger sister in south central Dublin. The everyday language is, of course, English, but she is writing in ‘newly-learned’ French to impress her beloved and just departed French tutor, a professional polyglot linguist. To impress him even more, she decides to learn Irish in order to write a novel of some kind in Irish. However, the action throughout is determined by Sally’s resolution to overcome her ignorance of the mysteries of sex and reproduction. The often sensual and dark humour of Sally Mara’s Journal intime is founded on language and languages, so this translation, while prioritizing clarity, aims to maintain ‘Frenchness’, tinged of course with Dublinese. Surprisingly, for a French author, Irish words and phrases occur throughout; these are not translated but, like some challenging French phrases, are supported by footnotes. In 1949, when Raymond Queneau wrote Journal intime, published anonymously under the pseudonym Sally Mara, he was, as always, greatly influenced by James Joyce and fascinated by the limitations of language. He was also in need of the ready money provided by Éditions du Scorpion, publishers of erotic and violent pulp fiction, and of Journal intime.

Book excerpt: It’s against the rules for a Guardian to fall in love with their mortal charge, but it’s too late for Seth, the supernatural playboy assigned to look after Genesis Green. Because the night Genesis crawls from the wreckage of her boyfriend’s totaled SUV, just before she slips into the darkness, Seth calls out to her, promising everything will be okay. It’s this mysterious voice that pulls Genesis back from the brink, and when Seth finally steps into her world, Genesis is just as drawn to him as he is to her. When she begins having strange visions—something she attributes to the head trauma she suffered from the accident—the Guardian Council, an otherworldly force of good, reaches out, asking for her help. The goal? To minimize or undo the damage the Diabols are inflicting upon her seaside town. But with her visions growing increasingly unreliable and her behavior more reckless by the day, Seth is finding it harder and harder to keep her safe, especially from herself, and losing her would be the end of him. What happens when the line between reality and the celestial becomes so blurred it’s impossible to determine who’s real and who’s otherworldly, and worse: who's good and who's evil? With her life and soul on the line, Genesis will suffer the greatest sacrifices imaginable to put an end to the evil threatening her world—and it isn’t the evil she was anticipating.
