Book Synopsis Something That Feels Like Truth by : Donald Lystra
Download or read book Something That Feels Like Truth written by Donald Lystra and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald Lystra's first novel, Something That Feels Like Truth, was the winner of the 2009 Midwest Book Award for fiction. This volume gathers a bracing selection of short stories by Lystra that are cut from the same cloth as his highly acclaimed novel. The stories in Something That Feels Like Truth confound expected plot turns, and Lystra develops his characters patiently and naturally, bringing them into convincing and honest actions. Every plot point in every story here holds an integral part in the imbuing of its beauty and meaning. You can also tell Lystra has read a lot of Hemingway and Chekhov: and that he aspires to be an inheritor of their effectively concise tradition. But there's a touch of Cheever in Lystra's stories as well: what that master storyteller did for the suburbs of New York, Lystra does for the Midwest.

Book Synopsis Corporation tax in Northern Ireland by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Northern Ireland Affairs Committee
Download or read book Corporation tax in Northern Ireland written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Northern Ireland Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-06-09 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The committee supports the principle of devolving to the Northern Ireland Executive the decision over whether or not to amend the rate of corporation tax, and believes this would assist the indigenous private sector to expand, innovate and employ more staff. The report uses 12.5% as a benchmark for the lower rate of corporation tax, but suggests that on the basis that the decision is devolved to the Northern Ireland executive it may, in due course, choose a lower rate. To maximise the benefits of a lower rate, though, continued progress needs to be made on other economic development policy mechanisms, including planning, education, and incentives for research and development and exporting. Low corporation tax is not a panacea for all Northern Ireland's economic ills, warns the committee, and there are considerable implementation issues: direct comparisons with the Republic of Ireland and its experience with 12.5% are difficult because the UK and Irish tax systems are different; and the UK Government would have to satisfy the criteria laid down in the Azores judgment for the tax reduction to satisfy EU rules on state aids. The committee was surprised to discover HM Treasury do not know how much corporation tax is raised in Northern Ireland. It is important that the Northern Ireland Executive has as much information as possible before deciding if, and how, it wishes to lower the rate, and at least a better idea of the amount of financial risk they are taking on. Furthermore, the benefits of lowering corporation tax must not be outweighed by the costs to businesses and HMRC.
Download or read book The Last Stone written by Mark Bowden and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true story of a cold case, a compulsive liar, and five determined detectives, from the #1 New York Times–bestselling author and “master journalist” (The Wall Street Journal). On March 29, 1975, sisters Katherine and Sheila Lyons, ages ten and twelve, vanished from a shopping mall in suburban Washington, DC As shock spread, then grief, a massive police effort found nothing. The investigation was shelved, and the mystery endured. Then, in 2013, a cold case squad detective found something he and a generation of detectives had missed. It pointed them toward a man named Lloyd Welch, then serving time for child molestation in Delaware. The acclaimed author of Black Hawk Down and Hue 1968 had been a cub reporter for a Baltimore newspaper at the time of the original disappearance, and covered the frantic first weeks of the story. In The Last Stone, he returns to write its ending. Over months of intense questioning and extensive investigation of Welch’s sprawling, sinister Appalachian clan, five skilled detectives learned to sift truth from determined lies. How do you get a compulsive liar with every reason in the world to lie to tell the truth? The Last Stone recounts a masterpiece of criminal interrogation, and delivers a chilling and unprecedented look inside a disturbing criminal mind. “One of our best writers of muscular nonfiction.” —The Denver Post “Deeply unsettling . . . Bowden displays his tenacity as a reporter in his meticulous documentation of the case. But in the story of an unimaginably horrific crime, it’s the detectives’ unwavering determination to bring Welch to justice that offers a glimmer of hope on a long, dark journey.” —Time
Download or read book You the Jury written by Gini Graham Scott and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a person repress memories of childhood sexual abuse and suddenly "recover" those memories 10, 15, or 20 years later? YOU THE JURY offers a balanced approach in which you will hear arguments on both sides of the question in a representative case argued by opposing attorneys. It's a fast-paced legal drama that takes place both inside and outside the courtroom, when the plaintiff, 27-year old Roberta Claire, decides to file a lawsuit charging sexual abuse by the defendant, her 66-year old stepfather, Lloyd Adams. Although the alleged incidents occurred more that fifteen year ago, Roberta is convinced they actually happened, while Lloyd insists he is innocent and that Roberta's psychologist planted the awful memories in his step-daughter's mind. When the case goes to trial, you'll be invited to participate in the decision-making process as a voting member of the jury. So are the memories of abuse real and do you find for the plaintiff? Or do you reject the theory of recovered memories as "junk science" and find for defendant? You decide. "This book is unique among the many books about 'recovered memories' because it presents both sides of the issue. Readers will get to 'see' what really happens in a trial-and the reader is a juror. Which witnesses should be believed is up to the reader. It is a realistic challenge."-Robert Koscielney, Member/Board of Directors, False Memory Syndrome Foundation "You the Jury is a riveting and fascinating book and shows the human element of the destruction and devastation of family members. It shows professional therapists with their conflicting opinions on this controversial issue. Written in fiction-like form, You the Jury is magnetic in holding your attention to an issue and tragedy that is all too endemic in our society."-Claire R. Reeves, President/Founder, Mothers Against Sexual Abuse, MASA
Download or read book Tarnished Heisman written by Don Yaeger and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-01-15 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In order that there will be no misunderstanding regarding the eligibility of a candidate, the recipient of the award must be a bona fide student of an accredited university. The recipient must be in compliance with the bylaws defining an NCAA student." -- From the ballot for the Heisman Trophy December 10, 2005: Amid a roaring ovation and media crush, with his family standing proudly by his side, Reginald Alfred Bush is named the year's Heisman Trophy winner. With his honest demeanor, effervescent smile and, of course, stunning talent displayed on the fields of the University of Southern California, Reggie Bush is, on that celebratory night, the portrait of a great American sportsman, and the pinnacle of everything the NCAA espouses in its athletes. What America didn't know about the acclaimed college star was that, in direct violation of NCAA policies, Bush and his family had allegedly taken hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and gifts long before he ever laid his hands on the Heisman. The rumors first surfaced one week before the 2006 NFL draft: allegations of improper benefits that transformed Bush's final year at USC into a financial windfall. The resulting scandal from such charges could mark one of the darkest chapters in college football history. Now, drawn together for the first time in Tarnished Heisman, the facts are laid bare. Don Yaeger, a former Sports Illustrated investigative reporter who documented the Duke University lacrosse case in the shattering New York Times bestseller It's Not About the Truth, reveals the heated controversy behind Bush's high-flying rise before turning pro for the New Orleans Saints, going back to his first taste of fame, when Bush landed in the pages of Sports Illustrated and all eyes were watching to see what was next for the USC sophomore. What few eyes saw, however, were the ties between Bush and two San Diego men, cofounders of a fledgling sports agency, who claim to have paid Bush and his family in cash and gifts to ensure his endorsement -- benefits including a vintage car, lavish trips, and an upscale home where Bush's family lived rent-free. Don Yaeger exposes the NCAA-prohibited activity in which Bush allegedly engaged, and also shows how USC and its coaching staff appeared to have turned a blind eye to the increasingly luxurious lifestyle of their star athlete and his family. With the explosive information revealed in Tarnished Heisman, Bush stands to be ruled ineligible -- a decision that could cost his alma mater the 2004 national championship title, force the forfeit of every game Bush played in after losing his eligibility, and potentially strip Reggie Bush of the shining prize of his college career: the Heisman Trophy.
