Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2019, suicide was the second leading cause of death in young children, with a percentage of those deaths occurring before the age of twelve. The rate goes up with many children having attempted or thought about committing suicide. The faces of these children are never known, and their voices are never heard until they make headlines from this unspeakable act. Parents, teachers, counselors, other school staff, and pastors are often unaware of the storm that is raging inside of our children. Many ask how can this happen, while others turn their heads and ears to the cry and desperation of children in turmoil. How are we as a human race failing our children? There is so much that is misunderstood about suicide, and society chooses not to talk about this deadly problem. As parents, we teach our children the benefits of healthy eating, how to cross the street, and stranger danger. We also prepare them for going to college, saving money, and being successful in life. However, as parents, we do not think about suicide being an issue in the lives of our kids. Factors that encourage suicide may be bullying, depression, low self-esteem, trouble in the home, physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, and mental illness. Games, videos, and suicide challenges are also the causes of a child taking his or her life. What can adults do? We need to listen to our children without dismissing their thoughts and feelings. We need to talk to our children about suicide, and we need to embrace them, so that they will know that we can be trusted. Parents should also seek professional help for their child. If you are a parent, caregiver, school staff, family member, friend, or pastor, listen with all your heart. The National Suicide Prevention Hotline number is 800-273-8255. My prayer is that the world will come together to fight this disease.

Book excerpt: With Texasville, Larry McMurtry returns to the unforgettable Texas town and entertaining characters from one of his best-loved books, The Last Picture Show. This is a Texas-sized story brimming with home truths of the heart, and men and women we recognize, believe in, and care about deeply. Set in the post-oil-boom 1980s, Texasville brings us up to date with Duane, who's got an adoring dog, a sassy wife, a twelve-million-dollar debt, and a hot tub by the pool; Jacy, who's finished playing "Jungla" in Italian movies and who's returned to Thalia; and Sonny—Duane's teenage rival for Jacy's affections—who owns the car wash, the Kwik-Sackstore, and the video arcade. With his talent for writing lovable, eccentric characters, Texasville is one of Larry McMurtry's funniest and most touching contemporary novels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Funny, sad, full of wonderful characters and the word-perfect dialogue of which he is the master, McMurtry brings the Thalia saga to an end with Duane confronting depression in the midst of plenty. Surrounded by his children, who all seem to be going through life crises involving sex, drugs, and violence; his wife, Karla, who is wrestling with her own demons; and friends like Sonny, who seem to be dying, Duane can't seem to make sense of his life anymore. He gradually makes his way through a protracted end-of-life crisis of which he is finally cured by reading Proust's Remembrance of Things Past, a combination of penance, and prescription from Dr. Carmichael that somehow works. Duane's Depressed is the work of a powerful, mature artist, with a deep understanding of the human condition, a profound ability to write about small-town life, and perhaps the surest touch of any American novelist for the tangled feelings that bind and separate men and women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on his own extraordinary life, Gregory David Roberts’ Shantaram is a mesmerizing novel about a man on the run who becomes entangled within the underworld of contemporary Bombay—the basis for the Apple + TV series starring Charlie Hunnam. “It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured.” An escaped convict with a false passport, Lin flees maximum security prison in Australia for the teeming streets of Bombay, where he can disappear. Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, the two enter the city’s hidden society of beggars and gangsters, prostitutes and holy men, soldiers and actors, and Indians and exiles from other countries, who seek in this remarkable place what they cannot find elsewhere. As a hunted man without a home, family, or identity, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city’s poorest slums, and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The search leads him to war, prison torture, murder, and a series of enigmatic and bloody betrayals. The keys to unlock the mysteries and intrigues that bind Lin are held by two people. The first is Khader Khan: mafia godfather, criminal-philosopher-saint, and mentor to Lin in the underworld of the Golden City. The second is Karla: elusive, dangerous, and beautiful, whose passions are driven by secrets that torment her and yet give her a terrible power. Burning slums and five-star hotels, romantic love and prison agonies, criminal wars and Bollywood films, spiritual gurus and mujaheddin guerrillas—this huge novel has the world of human experience in its reach, and a passionate love for India at its heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Childhood disabilities, particularly cognitive disabilities, are on the rise yet social programs and services to help US families respond to disabilities are not. Many families turn to grandparents for assistance juggling work, family responsibilities, and specialized therapies. This book is based on in-depth interviews with grandparents who are providing at least some care to grandchildren with disabilities. The analyses will help to better understand (1) under what conditions grandparents provide care and support, (2) what types and intensities of care and support grandparents provide, and (3) the impact of that care and support on grandparents’ social, emotional, physical, and financial wellbeing. In this fascinating and provocative book, Madonna Harrington Meyer and Ynesse Abdul-Malak take readers on a deep dive into the complex lives of grandparents who care for their disabled grandchildren. In Grandparenting Children with Disabilities, their interviews reveal the joy, meaning, and purpose grandparents find in caregiving, the challenges and frustrations they encounter, and the many ways they compromise their own health and well-being for the sake of their grandchildren. Drawing from theories of cumulative inequality and from their deep knowledge of the US policy context, the authors lay bare the systemic failures that leave families of children with disabilities without adequate support and that place the most vulnerable among them at grave physical, emotional, and financial risk... Jane McLeod, Provost Professor, Indiana University Grandparents in the U.S. already take on far more parenting responsibilities as compared to their peers in other countries. Grandparenting Children with Disabilities demonstrates that the intensity of these responsibilities is compounded for those whose grandchildren have disabilities given limited policy supports and a society still largely unaccommodating to those with disabilities. This book beautifully navigates the tension between the love these grandparents have for their grandchildren and the challenges they face caring for them. Pamela Herd, Professor, Georgetown University Grandparenting Children with Disabilities offers important insights about the lived experience of older adults who care for and care about their grandchildren...The authors skillfully integrate the stories they tell with consideration of macro social structural influences and life course perspectives... I recommend it highly! Eva Kahana, Distinguished University Professor, Case Western Reserve

Book excerpt: Take a police chief who has never before served in law enforcement, push a reluctant but more convenient than qualified doctor into the job of coroner, insert a mayor in his first few weeks of holding any office, and show them a water-filled mine pit with bodies dressed in costumes of the roaring twenties popping to its surface, and what you get is a fiasco of epic proportions. Add to that a ninety-six-year old former Catholic nun who knows the story but will only dish it out in portions to a team of amateurs who are unsure she will live to tell, and an eccentric mining company employee who has everything to lose if the truth be told, and you have what should be an unsolvable crime. True enough for most, but this team of know-nothings will surprise. And their journey to the bottom of the truth is the journey found within the pages of Little Cicero. Little Cicero is the nickname given a small town on Minnesota's picturesque Mesabi Iron Range for its similarity to the Cicero, Illinois of Capone days; the streets of both having been honeycombed with tunnels for ease of travel from speakeasy to speakeasy during prohibition. The story surrounding the town explores the happenings of an earlier time through the ongoing investigation of an old woman who lived it, and the relationship that develops between her and the novice police chief as she relives those early memories reveal two things: the new chief is capable of getting to the truth, and his inexperience hinders him from taking action, even when the truth may involve murder.
