Book excerpt: Five unforgettable women. One beloved yoga studio. A million tales to tell. Lee is a caring yoga teacher who changes lives and inspires friendships. But a year after the breakup of her marriage, she's struggling to raise her twins and make ends meet at her small studio in LA's trendy Silver Lake. The California yoga scene is dominated by celebrity teachers with agents, publicists, and other trappings Lee has rejected. When she's offered a teaching stint at a high-profile yoga festival at Lake Tahoe, she has to choose between standing by her principles--and those of the man she's just started dating--and the lure of becoming a "star." It would be an easier choice if her four best friends could join her, but each has problems of her own. Katherine, a masseuse with a troubled past, is being evicted from the only real home she's ever had. Graciela, a dancer, is in New York trying to hide her affair with a famous baseball player from her volatile boyfriend. Imani is a TV actress coping with motherhood as she's struggling to make a comeback in film. Stephanie, a screenwriter, is trying to come to terms with a very unexpected relationship. Head Over Heels explores the burgeoning world of commercialized yoga with the warmth, humor, and insider knowledge that won Rain Mitchell's Tales from the Yoga Studio raves from critics and yogis, and made the book an international success.

Graciela would really like everyone to stop dying. After the scarring loss of her beloved dog Buster at the age of five, Graciela decides that no one she loves will ever die. But stopping death is easier said than done. Time rolls on inescapably and, as she grows, Graciela will, like everyone else, gain and lose the people most important to her to the eternal absence of mortality. Wickedly funny and deeply humane, Jacob Marx Rice's A Brief List of Everyone Who Died tells the story of all the deaths that make up a life. An online rehearsed reading of A Brief List of Everyone Who Died was shown by the Finborough Theatre in 2021 and was a finalist for the OffWestEnd Awards OnComm Award. This edition is published to coincide with the world premiere at London's Finborough Theatre in May 2023.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complicating the common view that immigrant incorporation is a top-down process, determined largely by parents, Vikki Katz explores how children actively broker connections that enable their families to become woven into the fabric of American life. Children’s immersion in the U.S. school system and contact with mainstream popular culture enables them more quickly to become fluent in English and familiar with the conventions of everyday life in the United States. These skills become an important factor in how families interact with their local environments. Kids in the Middle explores children’s contributions to the family strategies that improve communication between their parents and U.S. schools, healthcare facilities, and social services, from the perspectives of children, parents, and the English-speaking service providers that interact with these families via children’s assistance. Katz also considers how children’s brokering affects their developmental trajectories. While their help is critical to addressing short-term family needs, children’s responsibilities can constrain their access to educational resources and have consequences for their long-term goals. Kids in the Middle explores the complicated interweaving of family responsibility and individual attainment in these immigrant families. Through a unique interdisciplinary approach that combines elements of sociology and communication approaches, Katz investigates not only how immigrant children connect their families with local institutional networks, but also how they engage different media forms to bridge gaps between their homes and mainstream American culture. Drawing from extensive firsthand research, Katz takes us inside an urban community in Southern California and the experiences of a specific community of Latino immigrant families there. In addition to documenting the often-overlooked contributions that children of immigrants make to their families’ community encounters, the book provides a critical set of recommendations for how service providers and local institutions might better assist these children in fulfilling their family responsibilities. The story told in Kids in the Middle reveals an essential part of the immigrant experience that transcends both geographic and ethnic boundaries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This powerful and enriching collection of nine stories explores and illuminates the fusion of intimate and public dramas. Focusing on the persistence of personal memory amid political and historical upheaval, the tales in The Eighth Continent portray the impact of broad political and historical events on individual lives, success in the face of low expectations and the humor that redeems everyday struggles. In rich evocative language, award winning author Alba Ambert invokes strong characters and demonstrates the cool detachment of modern life. Populating the stories are engrossing individuals: underground revolutionaries faced with fear of betrayal; a woman who looks back at a massacre she witnessed as a child and the wrenching consequences of this event on her life; a linguist who makes a dangerous trip to a tropical island and finds a language on the verge of extinction; and a young woman in a mental hospital who challenges our perception of truth and lies, sanity and insanity.

Book excerpt: “What will I do if Carmela Bordeaux doesn’t arrive on time?” Graciela Brown shouted over her shoulder as she headed out the door. “That makes two of us,” Gabriel softly replied to Brown’s backside. “Especially since she has never existed anywhere except in my head,” he muttered softly when the woman was out of hearing range. So begins a harrowing tale as teen girl advice author Carmela Bordeaux battles with one of sudden fame's downsides: death threats from a White Supremacist group intent on killing her because she is beautiful, intelligent and a Latina.

Book excerpt: For Whom the Bell Tolls for Central America: The Flies of a Summer is the story of several young Americans living in Central America during the war-torn years of the Cold War. Scott Perez is a college graduate working on boats in Panama when he gets a career opportunity from an enigmatic old man claiming to be a general from the Cuban Revolution. While traveling throughout Central America, doing research for the old man, he learns he has been a courier for a vast Communist network and the old man is indeed Camilo Cienfuegos, the Cuban General presumed to have died in a plane crash in the sixties. Bill Walters is an army engineer stationed in Panama who dreams of a career in the Foreign Service. While doing several humanitarian missions for the embassy, there is a massacre in one of the villages in which he worked. Bill discovers the Guatemalan military committed the crime but in the interests of democracy, he is asked by the ambassador to cover it up. The two men are drawn to Guatemala where they struggle to walk a fine line between the warring ideologies of communism and democracy.
