Thirteen-year-old Eldora has always believed that her mother died when she was very little, and for nine years she has lived with people that she calls Aunt and Uncle. The year is 1850, and all three have exchanged their quiet lives in New Bedford, Massachusetts, for new ones in San Francisco, the rapidly growing city that is the heart of the California Gold Rush. Shortly after their arrival, they receive a letter from an unknown woman who believes she is Eldora's mother. She is eager to meet her long-lost daughter, and a visit is arranged. As Eldora deals with her conflicting feelings about this news, she must also adjust to the challenges -- and dangers -- of living in a brash and growing city. She finds herself teaching English to two Mexicano children and beginning to learn Spanish, and an unlikely friendship with a boy named Luke introduces her to the hard, sometimes humorous, and often violent world of the mining camps. Every day seems to bring something different and new to consider. But can Eldora discover where -- and to whom -- she belongs? Told in letters that ring with the voice of the times, Letters from the Corrugated Castle is an intriguing adventure set in a fascinating time in California's history -- a worthy conclusion to the geographical trilogy begun with A Gathering of Days, winner of the Newbery Medal, and Brothers of the Heart.

Book excerpt: Finalist for the 2022 National Book Award in Translated Literature! “Was desire something like being possessed by a nightmare?” Fernanda and Annelise are so close they are practically sisters: a double image, inseparable. So how does Fernanda end up bound on the floor of a deserted cabin, held hostage by one of her teachers and estranged from Annelise? When Fernanda, Annelise, and their friends from the Delta Bilingual Academy convene after school, Annelise leads them in thrilling but increasingly dangerous rituals to a rhinestoned, Dior-scented, drag-queen god of her own invention. Even more perilous is the secret Annelise and Fernanda share, rooted in a dare in which violence meets love. Meanwhile, their literature teacher Miss Clara, who is obsessed with imitating her dead mother, struggles to preserve her deteriorating sanity. Each day she edges nearer to a total break with reality. Interweaving pop culture references and horror concepts drawn from from Herman Melville, H. P. Lovecraft, and anonymous “creepypastas,” Jawbone is an ominous, multivocal novel that explores the terror inherent in the pure potentiality of adolescence and the fine line between desire and fear.

But when her mother has a stroke and her beloved uncle suddenly disappears, Mariana must put her life on hold to return to her home in Ayotlan, Mexico. She soon discovers her town is no longer the place she remembers. Ayotlan’s beaches, sea turtle colonies, and historic center are decimated under decades of neglect and abuse. What part did her late father have in this? And could it be related to her uncle’s disappearance? When Fernanda Lucero, a member of the indigenous Concáac people, convinces Mariana to join her sea turtle and architectural conservation projects, the deepening love between Mariana and Fernanda threatens to put them both further in harm’s way. This, together with the web of secrets Mariana unravels, stands to radically transform her and her family’s fate. Arribada is the story of a well-to-do woman pushed to confront her role in environmental and social injustice. It is the saga of a family faced with the realization that their comfortable position rests, beyond a strong work ethic, on crimes against what they hold dearest: the natural world, their town, and their loved ones.

Book excerpt: A retreat to Greece becomes a dangerous trap for a grieving and haunted widow in this novel from “a superb and gifted storyteller” (Mary Higgins Clark). Ever since Dorcas Brandt’s husband, Gino Nikkaris, died in a plane crash, she’s been beset by troubling suspicions that his shady intrigues in the art world may have been the cause of his death. Desperate for both a new future and answers to the questions about Gino’s past, Dorcas whisks her daughter away to the Greek island of Rhodes. Among Gino’s family, friends, and former colleagues—and a kindhearted American named Johnny—Dorcas hopes to find a semblance of peace as she traverses the magnificent ruins and ancient fortresses. But her dreams are soon dashed: There’s something accusatory and unforgiving in her late husband’s elderly female patron; the peculiar woman enlisted as her daughter’s nanny is a black hole of hostility; a new love is under threat; and as scrawled warnings appear and disappear before her eyes, she fears for her own sanity. Now, as her husband’s mysterious past casts a shadow over Dorcas’s every move, the young mother must confront not only a terrible truth but also the terrifying fate that awaits her on the white cliffs of the Aegean. Set against a picturesque Mediterranean backdrop, this novel of lies and family secrets from a New York Times–bestselling and Edgar Award–winning author is “told with the skill that has caused Miss Whitney to be compared with Mary Stewart and Daphne du Maurier” (The Springfield Republican). This ebook features an illustrated biography of Phyllis A. Whitney including rare images from the author’s estate.

Book excerpt: A violent crime brings together four lives in Danielle Steel’s sixtieth bestselling novel, the story of a mother’s courage, a family’s terror, and a triumph of human strength and dignity in the face of overwhelming odds. Outside the gates of a California prison, Peter Morgan is released after four long years and vows to redeem himself in the eyes of the young daughters he left behind. Simultaneously, Carl Waters, a convicted murderer, is set on the path of freedom with him. That night, three hundred miles south in San Francisco, police detective Ted Lee comes home to a silent house; for twenty-nine years, he has been living for his job—and slowly falling out of love with his wife. Across town, in an exclusive Pacific Heights neighborhood, a mother tries to shield her three children from the panic rising within her. Four months after her husband’s death, Fernanda Barnes faces a mountain of debt she cannot repay, a world destroyed, and a marriage lost. Within weeks, the lives of these four people will collide in ways none of them could have foreseen. For Fernanda, whose life had once been graced by beautiful homes, security, success, and stunning wealth, the death of her brilliant, brooding husband was already too much to bear. She simply couldn’t imagine a greater loss, until a devastating crime rocks her family to its core—and brings Detective Ted Lee into her life. A man of unshakable integrity, Lee will soon become the one person who tries to save Fernanda’s family from a terrifying fate. Fernanda must draw on a strength she never knew she had. Racing against time in the underbelly of the criminal world, buffeted by the dark side of power, and unmoored by loss and betrayal, no one can predict where this tragedy will take them. Danielle Steel brilliantly explores the collision of a shocking crime with the ordinary lives of its victims in a novel that mesmerizes from start to finish. Ransom is at once a riveting evocation of life’s inexplicable turns of fate and a testament to the human will to survive.

Book excerpt: Rafael Molinet Rojas, an inconspicuous Spaniard living in London, regrettably finds that there is nothing worth living for when his closest companion–his mother–dies. Hoping to make a dignified–and, although he won’t admit it, dramatic–exit from this world, Molinet plots his escape, picking an elegant setting for his suicide via sleeping pills: Morocco’s L’Hirondelle d’Or, one of the most luxurious resorts in the world. There, he will be able to forget his cares, drape himself in a white caftan, and try to make a little money playing backgammon before he does himself in. The day before his trip, Molinet has a lunch date with his vivacious niece–who enthralls him with the story of a scandalous and deeply suspicious death. Jaime Valdés, high society lothario, has seemingly choked to death in the presence of both his mistress and his wife, but all of Spain is atwitter with the possibility of murder. Coincidentally, when he arrives at the spa, Molinet realizes that the stylish woman sitting by the pool is none other than Valdés’s widow. And when a throng of gossipy Europeans arrive on the scene, it quickly becomes clear that despite its air of tranquility, many sinister things are happening at L’Hirondelle. Before he knows it, Molinet’s eavesdropping leads to a startling turn of events. Internationally bestselling author Carmen Posadas has created a corrosive and witty high society whodunit in the vein of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. The Last Resort mixes poolside cocktails and acid-laced gossip with privilege and murder to marvelous effect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume brings transnational feminisms in conversation with intersectional and decolonial approaches. The conversation is pluriversal; it voices and reflects upon a plurality of geo- and corpopolitical as well as epistemic locations in specific Global South/East/North/West contexts. The aim is to explore analytical modes that encourage transgressing methodological nationalisms which sustain unequal global power relations, and which are still ingrained in the disciplinary perspectives that define much social science and humanities research. A main focus of the volume is methodological. It asks how an engagement with transnational, intersectional and decolonial feminisms can stimulate border-crossings. Boundaries in academic knowledge-building, shaped by the limitations imposed by methodological nationalisms, are challenged in the book. The same applies to boundaries of conventional – disembodied and ethically un-affected – academic writing modes. The transgressive methodological aims are also pursued through mixing genres and shifting boundaries between academic and creative writing. Pluriversal Conversations on Transnational Feminisms is intended for broad global audiences of researchers, teachers, professionals, students (from undergraduate to postgraduate levels), activists and NGOs, interested in questions about decoloniality, intersectionality, and transnational feminisms, as well as in methodologies for boundary transgressing knowledge-building.

'A unique and honest perspective on the fashion industry... Cameron doesn’t just hold the door open for more voices from within fashion, she makes a compelling argument as to why they must be heard.' CHRISTY TURLINGTON BURNS Scouted by a modelling agent when she was sixteen years old, Cameron Russell approached her job with scepticism. She was a precocious and serious student with her sights set on college — not the runway. But modelling seemed to offer young women like her access to wealth, fame, and influence. Besides, as she was often reminded, there were 'a million girls in line' to replace her. A ferocious, visceral memoir, How to Make Herself Agreeable to Everyone chronicles how Russell learned to navigate the dizzying space between physical appearance and interiority, and making money in an often-exploitative system. *** 'A book of real power.' STYLIST, Best Non-Fiction Books of 2024 'Russell’s voice is steady and compelling throughout, offering young women, especially, a thoughtful and powerful way through.' PEGGY ORENSTEIN, author of Girls & Sex 'Compelling, smart and insightful.' VENETIA LA MANNA, host of All The Small Things 'Unforgettable... Fiercely intellectual, deeply vulnerable, and unapologetically honest, Russell reads through the layers of gender, race, capital, and exploitation in the fashion industry.' Book excerpt: The second story in the Zack Stone series finds Zack in the country of Bahrain, tasked by the SOC Command to assist the Bahrain government in standing up their own Special Ops program. Zack works his way through and around the customs of this small Arabic country to bring the program to fruition in less than three months. During his time there, Zack falls in love with one of the female cadets, putting both himself and the women in constant danger of discovery. He manages to leave Bahrain with his reputation as the best of the best still intact. He recruits his lover, Dounia al Zanawi to join him and several U.S. special ops members in standing up a private security company known as CAPSTONE-X. Headed by former Senator Charles Clyborne, CAPSTONE’s mission is to rid the country of the corruption running rampant within the U.S. Political machine, as well as rid the world of corrupt leaders. Zack remains the number one target of Denny Cravens, the Chief of the Special Operations Division at CIA. The two go back and forth with the all-out intent of getting rid of each other. Zack loses good friends, colleagues, and professional acquaintances in the ongoing battle to unseat Denny Cravens from his powerful position. Along the way, it seems Denny is protected by very powerful political figures, making it nearly impossible to bring him to justice. The entire CAPSTONE team heads to North Korea to rescue the United States’ top Nuclear Scientist. Kidnapped by North Korean agents as he drove to work, Dr. Paul Dunning was moved to the NK nuclear lab in Pyong Yang. He was told, assist the NK scientists there to develop a nuclear weapon, or his entire family would be killed. A daring rescue takes place as the team devise a plan to enter North Korea, obtain Dr. Dunning, and egress North Korea. In order to have plausible deniability, the president was forced to use non-USG assets for the rescue.
