Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Itineraries of Expertise contends that experts and expertise played fundamental roles in the Latin American Cold War. While traditional Cold War histories of the region have examined diplomatic, intelligence, and military operations and more recent studies have probed the cultural dimensions of the conflict, the experts who constitute the focus of this volume escaped these categories. Although they often portrayed themselves as removed from politics, their work contributed to the key geopolitical agendas of the day. The paths traveled by the experts in this volume not only traversed Latin America and connected Latin America to the Global North, they also stretch traditional chronologies of the Latin American Cold War to show how local experts in the early twentieth century laid the foundation for post–World War II development projects, and how Cold War knowledge of science, technology, and the environment continues to impact our world today. These essays unite environmental history and the history of science and technology to argue for the importance of expertise in the Latin American Cold War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade flowed across Eurasia, around the Indian Ocean, and over the Mediterranean for millennia, but in the early modern period, larger parts of the globe became connected through these established trade routes. Knowledge, embodied in various people, materials, texts, objects, and practices, also moved and came together along these routes in hubs of exchange where different social and cultural groups intersected and interacted. Entangled Itineraries traces this movement of knowledge across the Eurasian continent from the early years of the Common Era to the nineteenth century, following local goods, techniques, tools, and writings as they traveled and transformed into new material and intellectual objects and ways of knowing. Focusing on nonlinear trajectories of knowledge in motion, this volume follows itineraries that weaved in and out of busy, crowded cosmopolitan cities in China; in the trade hubs of Kucha and Malacca; and in centers of Arabic scholarship, such as Reyy and Baghdad, which resonated in Bursa, Assam, and even as far as southern France. Contributors explore the many ways in which materials, practices, and knowledge systems were transformed and codified as they converged, swelled, at times disappeared, and often reemerged anew.

This book sheds light on how AI technologies are poised to replace certain traditional jobs while simultaneously creating new opportunities in emerging fields. The book begins by setting the stage, explaining the historical context of technological revolutions and their profound impact on society and the labor market. It then delves into the basic principles of AI, highlighting its learning mechanisms through machine learning and deep learning. The core of the book revolves around the identification of old jobs and industries that are susceptible to automation and replacement by AI and humanoid robots. It examines various professions, such as customer service representatives, drivers, computer programmers, research analysts, paralegals, factory and warehouse workers, financial traders, travel advisors, content writers, and graphic designers, to illustrate how AI is disrupting these fields. While discussing the decline of traditional jobs, the book simultaneously explores the emergence of new opportunities in industries that are set to thrive alongside AI and automation. It identifies sectors where demand for human workers is expected to rise, emphasizing the need for reskilling and adaptation to these changing job markets. The book underscores the significance of adaptability and lifelong learning in the face of AI-driven disruptions.
