Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his introduction, Fr. Julián Carrón asks: "Why is hospitality a miracle? It seems like something we should take for granted-opening the door of our home and letting someone in should be normal." And yet, he notes, "it is so exceptional that when it happens, everyone is amazed." In the talks and interviews collected in The Miracle of Hospitality, Fr. Luigi Giussani, founder of the international lay movement Communion and Liberation (CL), delves into the source of this miracle-the free gift we call charity. He writes: "Only if we are aware that we are loved-with clarity or confusion, implicitly or explicitly-can we love, which means to embrace, to welcome within us, and to share." Fr. Giussani's words were shaped by a long-running dialogue with the Welcoming Families Association, an organization that emerged out of the lived experience of CL and which has for many years promoted foster care and adoption, as well as support for migrants, the elderly, and the disabled. Given the ever-present phenomena of war, mass migration, and the many threats facing millions of children today, the miracle of hospitality is more urgently needed than ever.

Book excerpt: 'An enjoyable, highly readable history that manages to bring murky, often fiendishly complex events into the light' Sunday Times Italy emerged from the Second World War in ruins. Divided, invaded and economically broken, it was a nation that some people claimed had ceased to exist. And yet, as rural society disappeared almost overnight, by the 1960s, it could boast the fastest-growing economy in the world. In The Archipelago, historian John Foot chronicles Italy's tumultuous history from the post-war period to the present day. From the silent assimilation of fascists into society after 1945 to the artistic peak of neorealist cinema, he examines both the corrupt and celebrated sides of the country. While often portrayed as a failed state on the margins of Europe, Italy has instead been at the centre of innovation and change – a political laboratory. This new history tells the fascinating story of a country always marked by scandal but with the constant ability to re-invent itself. Comprising original research and lively insights, The Archipelago chronicles the crises and modernisations of more than seventy years of post-war Italy, from its fields, factories, squares and housing estates to Rome's political intrigue.

Book excerpt: A Cultural History of Education in the Age of Empire presents essays that examine the following key themes of the period: church, religion and morality; knowledge, media and communications; children and childhood; family, community and sociability; learners and learning; teachers and teaching; literacies; and life histories. The period between 1800 and 1920 was pivotal in the global history of education and witnessed many of the key developments which still shape the aims, context and lived experience of education today. These developments included the spread of state sponsored mass elementary education; the efforts of missionary societies and other voluntary movements; the resistance, agency and counter-initiatives developed by indigenous and other colonized peoples as well as the increasingly complex cross border encounters and movements which characterized much educational activity by the end of this period. An essential resource for researchers, scholars, and students in history, literature, culture, and education.

Book excerpt: Pope Benedict XVI has proclaimed a year dedicated to St. Paul, beginning on June 29, 2008. Readers can celebrate the “Year of St. Paul” by praying through this unique collection of meditations by renowned biblical scholar and retired archbishop of Milan, Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini. In simple and moving language, Martini weaves together St. Paul’s life, character, and teachings in such a way that we come to know the apostle as a human being with the same hopes and struggles that we have. At the end of each chapter, Cardinal Martini leads us through a series of questions to help us reflect on our own lives in light of St. Paul’s experiences. The depth and significance of St. Paul’s New Testament teachings—and their relevance to our lives today—come to light in these meditations, most of which are being published in English for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together new writing by some of the field’s most compelling voices from the United States and Europe, this is the first book to examine Italy--as a territory of both matter and imagination--through the lens of the environmental humanities. The contributors offer a wide spectrum of approaches--including ecocriticism, film studies, environmental history and sociology, eco-art, and animal and landscape studies--to move past cliché and reimagine Italy as a hybrid, plural, eloquent place. Among the topics investigated are post-seismic rubble and the stratifying geosocial layers of the Anthropocene, the landscape connections in the work of writers such as Calvino and Buzzati, the contaminated fields of the ecomafia’s trafficking, Slow Food’s gastronomy of liberation, poetic birds and historic forests, resident parasites, and nonhuman creatures. At a time when the tension between the local and the global requires that we reconsider our multiple roots and porous place-identities, Italy and the Environmental Humanities builds a creative critical discourse and offers a series of new voices that will enrich not just nationally oriented discussions, but the entire debate on environmental culture. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Armistice and the consequent German occupation of the Julian regions, which were in fact annexed to the German Reich with the creation of the Zone of Operations of the Adriatic Coast, the German military authorities decreed the establishment of territorial self-defense units, formed by Italian, Slovenian and Croatian citizens, to flank the German units in the fight against the partisan phenomenon. The Landschutz was thus organized, an ethnically based corps, which had to “contribute to the maintenance of order and security”, and was formally established by Supreme Commissioner Rainer on October 1, 1943. In the varied panorama of units created during the war with non-German personnel, not enough importance has ever been given to these small units of Territorial Defense, and this volume attempts to provide as in-depth an analysis as possible of the life of the Landschutz.

St. Francis of Assisi was constantly aware of God's hand being ever operative in his own life. Helping others perceive God's direct and personal intervention in their lives highlights St. Francis'way of training others in Christian discipleship."--Publisher.

Book excerpt: Innovative practices in education and local development in Western Europe, Australia, and the United States are described and analyzed in this report. Part One reviews urban problems, their impact on education, and the need for a new approach. Part Two explores how schools and institutes of adult education can provide information about the local community and in the process teach children and adults how to analyze the community's situation and needs. It also describes community service projects that both address the problems of local development and help individual students to choose careers. Examples given include involvement in social services programs and housing rehabilitation programs. Part Three discusses a variety of projects in which schools and colleges concern themselves with improving the local community's economic situation. Examples presented here are school-based youth enterprises, school-business consulting activities, employment training and skills training programs, and college contributions at the teaching, research, and service levels. Part Four stresses the need for an effective alliance between education and development and offers suggestions for aiding this alliance through changes in teaching methods and curricula. Finally, general issues for analysis and themes for further work are indicated. (CMG)

Book excerpt: Calcio is John Foot's love letter to Italian football and its absorbing history. 'Calcio' tells the story of Italian football from its origins in the 1890s to the present day. It takes us through a history of great players and teams, of style, passion and success, but also of violence, cynicism, catenaccio tactics and corruption. We meet the personalities that have shaped this history - from the Italian heroes to the foreigners that failed, the model professionals to the mavericks. 'Calcio' evokes the triumphs (the 1982 World Cup victory) and the tragedies (Meroni, the 'Italian George Best', killed by his number one fan), set against a backdrop of paranoia and intrigue, in a country where the referee is seen as corrupt until proven otherwise. Calcio is no longer a game. It is sometimes difficult to define it as a sport. It is certainly big business and a fanatical civic religion. There is no moral code here. Winners are always right, losers always wrong. This history of Italian football - the first written in English - is a mix of serious analysis and comic storytelling, with vivid descriptions of games, goals, dives, missed penalties, riots and scandals in the richest and toughest league in the world.
