This book was released on 2006-11-15 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this expository work we shall conduct a survey of iterative techniques for solving the linear operator equations Ax=y in a Hilbert space. Whenever convenient these iterative schemes are given in the context of a complex Hilbert space -- Chapter II is devoted to those methods (three in all) which are given only for real Hilbert space. Thus chapter III covers those methods which are valid in a complex Hilbert space except for the two methods which are singled out for special attention in the last two chapters. Specifically, the method of successive approximations is covered in Chapter IV, and Chapter V consists of a discussion of gradient methods. While examining these techniques, our primary concern will be with the convergence of the sequence of approximate solutions. However, we shall often look at estimates of the error and the speed of convergence of a method.

This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on iterative methods for the treatment of the steady state neutron transport equation in slab geometry, bounded convex domain of Rn (n = 2,3) and in 1-D spherical geometry. We introduce a generic Alternate Direction Implicit (ADI)-like iterative method based on positive definite and m-accretive splitting (PAS) for linear operator equations with operators admitting such splitting. This method converges unconditionally and its SOR acceleration yields convergence results similar to those obtained in presence of finite dimensional systems with matrices possessing the Young property A. The proposed methods are illustrated by a numerical example in which an integro-differential problem of transport theory is considered. In the particular case where the positive definite part of the linear equation operator is self-adjoint, an upper bound for the contraction factor of the iterative method, which depends solely on the spectrum of the self-adjoint part is derived. As such, this method has been successfully applied to the neutron transport equation in slab and 2-D cartesian geometry and in 1-D spherical geometry. The self-adjoint and m-accretive splitting leads to a fixed point problem where the operator is a 2 by 2 matrix of operators. An infinite dimensional adaptation of minimal residual and preconditioned minimal residual algorithms using Gauss-Seidel, symmetric Gauss-Seidel and polynomial preconditioning are then applied to solve the matrix operator equation. Theoretical analysis shows that the methods converge unconditionally and upper bounds of the rate of residual decreasing which depend solely on the spectrum of the self-adjoint part of the operator are derived. The convergence of theses solvers is illustrated numerically on a sample neutron transport problem in 2-D geometry. Various test cases, including pure scattering and optically thick domains are considered.

Book excerpt: The Handbook of Mathematical Methods in Imaging provides a comprehensive treatment of the mathematical techniques used in imaging science. The material is grouped into two central themes, namely, Inverse Problems (Algorithmic Reconstruction) and Signal and Image Processing. Each section within the themes covers applications (modeling), mathematics, numerical methods (using a case example) and open questions. Written by experts in the area, the presentation is mathematically rigorous. The entries are cross-referenced for easy navigation through connected topics. Available in both print and electronic forms, the handbook is enhanced by more than 150 illustrations and an extended bibliography. It will benefit students, scientists and researchers in applied mathematics. Engineers and computer scientists working in imaging will also find this handbook useful.
Book Synopsis Iterative Methods for Ill-posed Problems by : Anatoly B. Bakushinsky
Download or read book Iterative Methods for Ill-posed Problems written by Anatoly B. Bakushinsky and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ill-posed problems are encountered in countless areas of real world science and technology. A variety of processes in science and engineering is commonly modeled by algebraic, differential, integral and other equations. In a more difficult case, it can be systems of equations combined with the associated initial and boundary conditions. Frequently, the study of applied optimization problems is also reduced to solving the corresponding equations. These equations, encountered both in theoretical and applied areas, may naturally be classified as operator equations. The current textbook will focus on iterative methods for operator equations in Hilbert spaces.

Book Synopsis Generalized Inverses and Applications by : M. Zuhair Nashed
Download or read book Generalized Inverses and Applications written by M. Zuhair Nashed and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 1069 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generalized Inverses and Applications, contains the proceedings of an Advanced Seminar on Generalized Inverses and Applications held at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on October 8-10, 1973 under the auspices of the university's Mathematics Research Center. The seminar provided a forum for discussing the basic theory of generalized inverses and their applications to analysis and operator equations. Numerical analysis and approximation methods are considered, along with applications to statistics and econometrics, optimization, system theory, and operations research. Comprised of 14 chapters, this book begins by describing a unified approach to generalized inverses of linear operators, with particular reference to algebraic, topological, extremal, and proximinal properties. The reader is then introduced to the algebraic aspects of the generalized inverse of a rectangular matrix; the Fredholm pseudoinverse; and perturbations and approximations for generalized inverses and linear operator equations. Subsequent chapters deal with various applications of generalized inverses, including programming, games, and networks, as well as estimation and aggregation in econometrics. This monograph will be of interest to mathematicians and students of mathematics.

Book Synopsis Non Linear Mathematics Vol. II by : Thomas L. Saaty
Download or read book Non Linear Mathematics Vol. II written by Thomas L. Saaty and published by RWS Publications. This book was released on 2014-12-22 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear equations have existed for hundreds of years; their systematic study, however, is a relatively recent phenomenon. This volume, together with its companion', Nonlinear Matliematics Vol. I, provides exceptionally comprehensive coverage of this recently formed area of study. It encompasses both older and more recent developments in the field of equations, with particular emphasis on nonlinear equations because, as Professor Saaty maintains, "that is what is needed today." Together the two volumes cover all the major types of classical equations (except partial differential equations, which require a separate volume). This volume includes material on seven types: operator equations, functional equations, difference equations, delay-differential equations, integral equations, integro-differential equations and stochastic differential equations. Special emphasis is placed on linear and nonlinear equations in function spaces and On general methods of solving different types of such equations. Above all, this book is practical. It reviews the variety of existing types of equations and provides methods for their solution. It is meant to help the reader acquire new methods for formulating problems. Its clear organization and copious references make it suitable for graduate students as well as scientists, technologists and mathematicians.
