Book excerpt: "I truly believe that I should be here and I can't even tell you why....God's palpable presence has never been more real ever since we came to Salvador-He's make a lot of things clear to us-what we should be doing, etc.-and I trust in that and I hope you can too." --Ita Ford, September 7, 1980 Ita Ford: Missionary Martyr is a literary biography of Ita Ford, one of four American churchwomen murdered in El Salvador by government forces on December 2, 1980. In these pages the author invites us to learn about Ita--about her courage, her humor, and her unquenchable hope. In the midst of the repression and violence of El Salvador, Ita Ford drew strength from her deep faith in God and found joy in her work on behalf of the poor. This book is not only about a tragic death, but about a life inspired by the gospel and marked by immense spiritual courage. Phyllis Zagano spent two years researching Ita Ford and here presents a moving account of the life and death of this extraordinary woman. It is an unforgettable story. +

Book excerpt: Intended for use in the two-term, freshman-level General, Organic, and Biochemistry course taken by Allied Health students, the Ninth Edition of this widely adopted text includes improved explanations, updated materials, cutting-edge developments, emerging technologies, and revisions to the popular Chemistry in Action sections. Hein, Pattison, Best, and Arena is a market-proven text that provides the most comprehensive coverage of general, organic, and biochemistry available at this level. Experienced authors, Hein, Pattison, Best, and Arena, recognize that both science and mathematics can be daunting subjects to students. They skillfully anticipate areas of difficulty and pace the text accordingly. Particular emphasis is placed on the understanding of how chemical principles relate to their lives and future careers. The authors focus on problem solving over rote memorization and provide a variety of exercises to aid in the development of this essential skill. While the authors have revised and updated sections on inorganic and organic chemistry throughout the text, they particularly focused on incorporating many of the recent developments in biochemistry.

Book excerpt: Throughout the Gospel of John Jesus poses a series of questions: "What are you looking for?" "Do you want to be healed?" "Why do I speak to you at all?" as well as the most poignant, addressed to Peter, "Do you love me?" Michael Crosby's reflections on these questions take us into the heart of John's gospel. He highlights an important theme: the tension between a model of the church that gives emphasis to the Petrine principle of apostolic authority and a model of the church -- characterized by the Beloved Disciple -- that gives greater emphasis to loving service and discipleship. As Crosby shows, it is in balancing the roles of both Peter and the Beloved Disciple that the church best reflects the spirit of Christ.

Book excerpt: For some decades, the work of Carmelite theologian Constance FitzGerald, OCD, has been a well-known secret, not only among students and practitioners of Carmelite spirituality, but also among spiritual directors, spiritual writers, retreatants, vowed religious women and men, and Christian theologians. This collection sets out to introduce the work of Sister Constance to a wider and more diverse audience––women and men who seek to strengthen themselves on the spiritual journey, who yearn to deepen personal or scholarly theological and religious reflection, and who want to make sense of the times in which we live. To this end, this volume curates seven of Sister Constance’s articles with probing and responsive essays written by ten theologians. Contributors include: Susie Paulik Babka Colette Ackerman, OCD Roberto S. Goizueta Margaret R. Pfeil Alex Milkulich Andrew Prevot Laurie Cassidy Maria Teresa Morgan Bryan N. Massingale M. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1984, Mother Teresa arrived in New Orleans to speak to a large crowd waiting in the Superdome. As Marie Bissell Constantin drove in from Baton Rouge to take her photograph, she had no idea that her encounter would mark the first of many, and that one day one of her images of Mother Teresa would be unveiled in front of over three hundred thousand people for her beatification ceremony in St. Peter's Square. In her photographic memoir, Constantin leads others through her unique journey of exploring the possibility of becoming a nun herself as she traveled to capture Mother Teresa in rare, private moments. In addition to powerful black-and-white images of Mother Teresa, Constantin shares personal stories that shine a light on the selfless life of nuns, from other religious orders, who live and work among the most abandoned people in the world.

Book excerpt: In this updated anthology Ethel Pochocki (author of Once Upon a Time Saints books) has selected a mixture for older youth of “soldiers and sailors, kings and queens, doctors, lawyers, beggars, thieves, poets, diplomats, fools and cranks,” and she has told their stories in her characteristic lively style. She shows how brave and generous such people were; how they challenged the society they lived in; and how they have since become light-bearers to enthral future generations of young people. Beginning with the Mexican Indian, Saint Juan Diego, born in 1474, and spanning 500 years, these 33 chapters include modern men and women, such as Blessed Teresa of Calcutta and Jean Vanier, as well as old favorites such as SS Teresa of Avila, Philip Neri and Francis de Sales. The author shows us how human and attractive their lives are, whatever the century they lived in, as they spring to life in these pages. Chapter head drawings are by Mary Beth Owens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic columns from the legendary New York journalist—“a master of the tough-talking, thoroughly researched, contentious, street-wise vignette” (San Francisco Chronicle). Although his career spans decades, the seven years that Jimmy Breslin spent at the New YorkDaily News sparked some of his finest work. When New York City tumbled into economic and social chaos at the end of the 1970s, Breslin was there. In his brief, insightful columns, he looked at the city not from the top down but from the bottom up. Eschewing the view of politicians, socialites, and captains of industry, Breslin’s heroes are men like Jim Moran, the cop who drove John Lennon to the emergency room after he was shot, or Barney Baker, an ex-boxer who served as bodyguard to mobster Meyer Lansky. These are average people who see big things, and Breslin is their herald. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Jimmy Breslin including rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the author’s personal collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Reagan's Gun-Toting Nuns, Theresa Keeley analyzes the role of intra-Catholic conflict within the framework of U.S. foreign policy formulation and execution during the Reagan administration. She challenges the preponderance of scholarship on the administration that stresses the influence of evangelical Protestants on foreign policy toward Latin America. Especially in the case of U.S. engagement in El Salvador and Nicaragua, Keeley argues, the bitter debate between U.S. and Central American Catholics over the direction of the Catholic Church shaped President Reagan's foreign policy. The flash point for these intra-Catholic disputes was the December 1980 political murder of four American Catholic missionaries in El Salvador. Liberal Catholics described nuns and priests in Central America who worked to combat structural inequality as human rights advocates living out the Gospel's spirit. Conservative Catholics saw them as agents of class conflict who furthered the so-called Gospel according to Karl Marx. The debate was an old one among Catholics, but, as Reagan's Gun-Toting Nuns contends, it intensified as conservative, anticommunist Catholics played instrumental roles in crafting U.S. policy to fund the Salvadoran government and the Nicaraguan Contras. Reagan's Gun-Toting Nuns describes the religious actors as human rights advocates and, against prevailing understandings of the fundamentally secular activism related to human rights, highlights religion-inspired activism during the Cold War. In charting the rightward development of American Catholicism, Keeley provides a new chapter in the history of U.S. diplomacy and shows how domestic issues such as contraception and abortion joined with foreign policy matters to shift Catholic laity toward Republican principles at home and abroad.
