Die Zeit, die jeder Mensch täglich dafür aufwendet, um Social-Media-Anwendungen zu nutzen, steigt seit 2006 kontinuierlich an. Aufgrund der immer höheren Reichweite von sozialen Medien ergeben sich tiefgreifende Veränderungen für die Kommunikation von Unternehmen mit ihren verschiedenen Anspruchsgruppen. Klassische Medien wie Zeitungen werden seltener genutzt, um von Unternehmensseite aus mit dem potenziellen Konsumenten in Kontakt zu treten. Dabei ist nicht nur die Verbreitung unternehmenseigener Werbung ein Thema, sondern auch die Kommunikation des eigenen Images. Fraglich bleibt, ob die Kommunikation über Social-Media-Anwendungen nur für den B2C-Markt als sinnvoll erachtet werden kann, oder ob sich ihre potentiellen Stärken auch für den B2B-Markt nutzen lassen.

The authors of Newsgames propose a new way of doing good journalism: videogames. Videogames are native to computers rather than a digitized form of prior media. Games simulate how things work by constructing interactive models; journalism as game involves more than just revisiting old forms of news production. Wired magazine's game Cutthroat Capitalism, for example, explains the economics of Somali piracy by putting the player in command of a pirate ship, offering choices for hostage negotiation strategies. Videogames do not offer a panacea for the ills of contemporary news organizations. Book excerpt: An investigation into the use of information communication technologies by refugees during flight, displacement and in settlement, this book examines the impact of Australia’s official policy of mandatory detention on how asylum seekers and refugees maintain links to diasporas and networks of support. Given the restricted contact with the world outside of the immigration detention centre, the book juxtaposes forms and processes of technology-mediated communication between institutionalised detention, with those of displacement and settlement. It finds that while there are obstacles to communication in situations of conflict and dislocation, asylum seekers and refugees are able to ‘make do’ with the technology options available to them in ways which were less constrained than in detention settings. The book also outlines how communication practices during the settlement process focus on learning new technologies, and repairing the disconnections with family members resulting from separation and detention.
