Book excerpt: Issue eight is an expedition, a road trip. We follow the breadcrumbs of spilled sentences from the Deep South, where Terry Barr questions his relationship with his heritage, his soil and his child, to the cluttered streets of India with critically acclaimed screenwriter and actress, Radha Bharadwaj, as she peeks under the covers of sibling love and rivalry. We gather roots and feathers with C. Malcolm Ellsworth in Farmer's Daughter. We eavesdrop on faith, feminism and femininity in taxi back-seats on the roads of Uzbekistan and Egypt with Kristen Hoggatt. Issue eight peeks through the cracks of Labor Day bedrooms and allows us to spy, for just a moment, on other people secrets and stories.

Book Synopsis The Power of Money by : Thomas Figueira
Download or read book The Power of Money written by Thomas Figueira and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2010-11-24 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was Athens an imperialistic state, deserving all the reputation for exploitation that adjective can imply, or was the Athenian alliance, even at its most unequal, still characterized by a convergence of interests? The Power of Money explores monetary and metrological policy at Athens as a way of discerning the character of Athenian hegemony in midfifth-century Greece. It begins with the Athenian Coinage Decree, which, after decades of scholarly attention, still presents unresolved questions for Greek historians about content, intent, date, and effect. Was the Decree an act of commercial imperialism or simply the codification of what was already current practice? Figueira interprets the Decree as one in a series concerned with financial matters affecting the Athenian city-state and emerging from the way the collection of tribute functioned in the alliance that we call the Athenian empire. He contends that the Decree served primarily to legislate the status quo ante.

Book Synopsis Crescas: Light of the Lord (Or Hashem) by :
Download or read book Crescas: Light of the Lord (Or Hashem) written by and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-10 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first complete English translation of Hasdai Crescas's Light of the Lord. Light of the Lord is widely acknowledged as a seminal work of medieval Jewish philosophy and second in importance only to Maimonides' Guide of the Perplexed. Crescas takes on not only Maimonides but, through him, Aristotle, and challenges views of physics and metaphysics that had become entrenched in medieval thought. Once the Aristotelian underpinnings of medieval thought are dislodged, Crescas introduces alternative physical views and reinstates the classical Jewish God as a God of love and benefaction rather than a self-intellecting intellect. The end for humankind then is to become attached in love to the God of love through devoted service.
