Book excerpt: This book deals with the Old Testament theme of the vengeance of YHWH, discussing both the exegetical and theological aspects of a biblical notion that until now has received far too little attention in scholarly research. After an exploration of the Umwelt use of the root NQM (vengeance/avenge), in the main part of the study all relevant Old Testament texts are dealt with in a thorough exegetical investigation. This leads to a theological outline which stresses the important place and positive function of God's vengeance in the Old Testament revelation. The theories of G.E. Mendenhall, P. Volz and K. Koch with regard to the theme of vengeance are criticized. Of special interest are the additional sections on the issues of blood vengeance and the imprecatory prayers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did medieval society deal with private justice, with grudges, and with violent emotions? This ground-breaking reader collects for the first time a number of unpublished or difficult-to-find texts that address violence and emotion in the Middle Ages. The sources collected here illustrate the power and reach of the language of vengeance in medieval European society. They span the early, high, and later middle ages, and capture a range of perspectives including legal sources, learned commentaries, narratives, and documents of practice. Though social elites necessarily figure prominently in all medieval sources, sources concerning relatively low-status individuals and sources pertaining to women are included. The sources range from saints' lives that illustrate the idea of vengeance to later medieval court records concerning vengeful practices. A secondary goal of the collection is to illustrate the prominence of mechanisms for peacemaking in medieval European society. The introduction traces recent scholarly developments in the study of vengeance and discusses the significance of these concepts for medieval political and social history.

Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered why in the Old Testament God wiped out an entire population in a global flood except for one family? Or why, when giving the land of Canaan to the children of Israel, He commanded the destruction of the entire Canaanite nation? Does this sound to you like a loving God, or does He seem more like a vengeful tyrant or egomaniac, demanding service and worship? On the other hand, there’s the God of the New Testament—Jesus, the Messiah. He is loving and patient, caring and selfless—not at all like the God of the Old Testament, right? He even gave His life for the people He loves. So how do we reconcile this picture of God, as seen in the life of Jesus, with the picture of God in the Old Testament? Are there two different Gods? Or perhaps this shows two different sides of the same God—with the Old Testament displaying God’s justice and vengeance toward the sinner, while the New Testament shows His mercy and forgiveness. In this book, the author seeks to offer the reader an alternative perspective, one that is biblically and historically founded in recorded Old Testament events, revealing God’s unconditional love for His creation throughout the Old Testament. As we explore Old Testament stories, it should become quite clear that the God of the Old Testament is just as loving, patient, and longsuffering—if not more so—as the God of the New Testament, Jesus Christ Himself! As you review the evidence contained herein, you may be surprised that you come to the same conclusion, understanding the consistent and amazing love of God throughout the history…and the future of humankind.

Book excerpt: Real World Application of the Judeo-Christian faith for the Military, Intelligence, and Law Enforcement communities. Principles and guidelines for those serving in all nations and cultures. The Lord God says “Thou shalt not kill”, yet kill we do. Cain killed Abel. Criminals steal, destroy, and kill. Soldiers kill the enemy. The enemy kills us. Then comes the day you pull the trigger and send someone into eternity. You did what must be done. Some say it had to be done, but you still sinned. Others say it’s all a sin and should not be done it all. But, where does that leave you? This book has the answers. Is “Thou shalt not kill” really that cut and dry? Are there Biblical precedents or provisions for Christians to do what is necessary in the line of duty without sinning? Is doing your duty, to God and Country, the dirty work, really a sin? No, it’s just the opposite. What God authorizes and the support He provides will surprise, encourage, and empower you. Minsters of Vengeance Gives Biblical guidance during undercover ops: for lying, stealing, sabotage, and more. Looks at subjects like lethal force authority, and different religious views of warfare. Draws a blueprint for prayer and a covenant mindset toward the enemy and for yourself. Discusses PTSD; concepts of mental, emotional and physical healing, help, and prevention. Examines spiritual gifts and help from the Holy Spirit and angels for the dirty work. Tackles the Problem of Evil and presents a Biblical Just War Theory or Doctrine of Violence. If John wrote Revelation to tell the Christian communities that he had seen the Lord and to encourage them to persevere, the macarisms underscore his conviction of God's vindication of the righteous who suffer now. With the sevenfold macarisms expressing hope in God's grace, John lays grounds for action by positing the good for which the contrary must be rejected.

Offering the truth is the primary and most important intent of this novel. James L. Avery (a seer) offers by explaining all evidence issues and describing the truth of who, how, what, why, where, and when; that is a requirement by the power of God. Neither of the polarized opinions about the homicides had any validity because the entire truth was not of knowledge. Not one crime scene expert can offer the truth better than this seer can about the issues of the double homicides. I am offering the truth because those experts failed God with their expertise gifted by him to do his will. In this, there is an obviously given difference between self-made and godsent. The truth is offered inside of a fiction novel so that it can be offered legally. The author is required to offer the names given to him, spiritually.

Elena Maldonado struggles to reach her father's home after she's been beaten brutally by the henchman of a local businessman, Robert Meister. At one time, Elena's father, Ray Cruz, worked as hired muscle himself, but he thought he'd left that life behind. When Elena knocks at his door, a wreck and unwilling to explain, his instincts kick in – the instinct to protect his family and wreak vengeance on whoever was behind the brutal message his daughter seems to have understood all too clearly – stay quiet, do as we say or worse will happen and no one you love will be safe. A trip to the hospital attracts the attention of the police and Detective Jack Carver. Carver warns Ray to let the police handle the case, but Ray is not the type to let this attack go unpunished. It doesn’t take long, however, before the FBI gets involved telling Ray that Elena is working with them. None of this stops Ray from asking his questions, bribing some, intimidating others and beating the hardest cases. Soon, he finds the henchmen, but they know very little about who hired them and nothing about why. Ray makes them pay for their ignorance and their brutality. Detective Carver and FBI agent Ramona Esposito warn Ray against taking things into his own hands not knowing how far Ray has already gone or is willing to go. Book excerpt: On November 4, 1995 the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin left Israeli society shocked and bewildered by the reemergence of religiously motivated political violence in an age of secularism. In Zealotry and Vengeance Samuel Peleg analyzes the social, political, and structural motivations and conditions that have encouraged this resurgence of religious violence. It profiles the rise of the Zionist messianic movement from protest and activism to assassination, and asks whether the killing of Rabin was a fluke or a harbinger of things to come--based on Israeli society's extensive support for the proclivity to violence. The book provides students of political behavior and participation with both a scientific study of the extremist state of mind and an acute analysis of the cycle of violence and tolerance threatening to once again engulf the Middle East.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible frequently depicts God as angry and violent, and sometimes depicts human violence as positive or even as commanded by God. This forms one of the most vexing problems in approaching Scripture and interpreting the Bible for preaching and teaching today. In this volume, Creach first examines the theological problems of violence and categorizes the types of violence that appear in scripture. He then wrestles with the most important biblical texts on violence to work through specific interpretational issues. This new volume in the Interpretation: Resources for Use of Scripture in the Church series will help preachers and pastors interpret those difficult texts, encouraging them to face violence in the Bible with honesty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only recently have historians of the crusades begun to seriously investigate the presence of the idea of crusading as an act of vengeance, despite its frequent appearance in crusading sources. Understandably, many historians have primarily concentrated on non-ecclesiastical phenomena such as feuding, purportedly a component of "secular" culture and the interpersonal obligations inherent in medieval society. This has led scholars to several assumptions regarding the nature of medieval vengeance and the role that various cultures of vengeance played in the crusading movement. This monograph revises those assumptions and posits a new understanding of how crusading was conceived as an act of vengeance in the context of the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. Through textual analysis of specific medieval vocabulary it has been possible to clarify the changing course of the concept of vengeance in general as well as the more specific idea of crusading as an act of vengeance. The concept of vengeance was intimately connected with the ideas of justice and punishment. It was perceived as an expression of power, embedded in a series of commonly understood emotional responses, and also as an expression of orthodox Christian values. There was furthermore a strong link between religious zeal, righteous anger, and the vocabulary of vengeance. By looking at these concepts in detail, and in the context of current crusading methodologies, fresh vistas are revealed that allow for a better understanding of the crusading movement and those who "took the cross," with broader implications for the study of crusading ideology and twelfth-century spirituality in general.
