Book excerpt: Isozymes, III: Developmental Biology contains manuscripts presented at the Third International Conference on isozymes convened in April 1974 at Yale University. Separating 61 manuscripts into chapters, this book begins by discussing the areas of ""isozymology"" that appear particularly promising for further developmental analysis. This text also looks into the role of isozymes as genetic markers in early mammalian development, as well as the mechanisms of intracellular enzyme localization. Significant topics on specific isozymes are given separately in other chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isoenzymes in Biology and Medicine attempts to give an account of the study of isoenzymes in relation to humans, animals, insects, higher plants, fungi, protozoa, algae, and bacteria. This book discusses the chemical structure, physiological aspects, metabolic role, and function of isoenzyme observations in genetic, ontogenic, and phylogenic studies. A detailed account of the use of isoenzyme in the diagnosis and pathogenesis of disease and control of therapy is also provided. This text likewise considers the isoenzymes of the oxidoreductases, transferases, and hydrolases, including its relation to clinical medicine. This publication is intended for biochemists, biologists, clinical biochemists and physicians.

Book Synopsis EBO — Experimental Biology Online Annual 1996/97 by : Christopher R. Bridges
Download or read book EBO — Experimental Biology Online Annual 1996/97 written by Christopher R. Bridges and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March 1996 the Society of Experimental Biology (UK) together with two other international scientific societies, the Australian and New Zealand Society for Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry and the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (formally the American Society for Zoology) joined forces with Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg to produce one of the first fully electronic online, peer-reviewed biological journals, Experimental Biology Online. The present product represents the fruits of this joint venture and encapsulates Volumes 1 and 2 of the journal. This will be an ongoing series such that an archival version of the journal will be available to all libraries as well as the on-line version. At the outset this was "new land" for all concerned but the launching of a journal which would cover experimental biology in terms of Animal, Cell and Plant topics was daunting but we all felt that the use of electronic media and the internet would be ideally suited to this purpose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1980s the European Journal of Biochemistry set out to publish review articles. The enterprise proved successful, resulting in high-level reviews written by well-known scientists appearing in the Journal. The reviews represent emerging and rapidly growing fields of research in fundamental as well as applied areas of biochemistry, such as medicine, biotechnology, agriculture and nutrition. Novel methodological and technological approaches which stimulate biochemical research are also included. The authors of the reviews are explicitly asked to be critical, selective, evaluative and interdisciplinary oriented. The reviews should encourage young scientists to think independently and creatively, and inform active investigators about the state of the art in a given field.

Book Synopsis Origin and spatiotemporal dynamics of the peroxisomal endomembrane system by : Vladimir I Titorenko
Download or read book Origin and spatiotemporal dynamics of the peroxisomal endomembrane system written by Vladimir I Titorenko and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The peroxisome is an organelle with essential roles in lipid metabolism, maintenance of reactive oxygen species homeostasis, and anaplerotic replenishment of tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates destined for mitochondria. Peroxisomes constitute a dynamic endomembrane system. The homeostatic state of this system is upheld via two pathways for assembling and maintaining the diverse peroxisomal compartments constituting it; the relative contribution of each pathway to preserving such system may vary in different organisms and under various physiological conditions. One pathway begins with the targeting of certain peroxisomal membrane proteins to an endoplasmic reticulum template and their exit from the template via pre-peroxisomal carriers; these carriers mature into metabolically active peroxisomes containing the entire complement of membrane and matrix proteins. Another pathway operates via growth and maturation of pre-existing peroxisomal precursors that do not originate from the endoplasmic reticulum; mature peroxisomes proliferate by undergoing fission. Recent studies have uncovered new roles for the peroxisomal endomembrane system in orchestrating important developmental decisions and defining organismal longevity. This Frontiers Special Topic Issue is focused on the advances in our understanding of how evolutionarily distant organisms coordinate the formation, maturation, proliferation, maintenance, inheritance and quality control of the peroxisomal endomembrane system and how peroxisomal endomembranes communicate with other cellular compartments to orchestrate complex biological processes and various developmental programs from inside the cell.

Book Synopsis New Enzymes for Organic Synthesis by : Thomas Scheper
Download or read book New Enzymes for Organic Synthesis written by Thomas Scheper and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-04 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isolated enzymes are known as useful for synthesising of complex molecules with more and more large scale applications in recent years. These six reviews show different steps in the development of enzymatic syntheses for useful compounds. Screening of novel enzymes, their biochemical characterisation as well as reaction engineering approaches in order to increase their performance are treated in three papers. Then the use of protein design as a tool for the directed improvement of reactivity and selectivity of biocatalysts is described in two reviews. The supply of sufficient quantities of biocatalysts must not be neglected: fluidized bed adsorption as an emerging technology for the simple and fast purification of biomolecules is presented in the light of its potential in large scale supply of enzyme catalysts.
