Book Synopsis Medial Representations by : Kaleem Siddiqi
Download or read book Medial Representations written by Kaleem Siddiqi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-09-08 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last half century has seen the development of many biological or physical t- ories that have explicitly or implicitly involved medial descriptions of objects and other spatial entities in our world. Simultaneously mathematicians have studied the properties of these skeletal descriptions of shape, and, stimulated by the many areas where medial models are useful, computer scientists and engineers have developed numerous algorithms for computing and using these models. We bring this kno- edge and experience together into this book in order to make medial technology more widely understood and used. The book consists of an introductory chapter, two chapters on the major mat- matical results on medial representations, ?ve chapters on algorithms for extracting medial models from boundary or binary image descriptions of objects, and three chapters on applications in image analysis and other areas of study and design. We hope that this book will serve the science and engineering communities using medial models and will provide learning material for students entering this ?eld. We are fortunate to have recruited many of the world leaders in medial theory, algorithms, and applications to write chapters in this book. We thank them for their signi?cant effort in preparing their contributions. We have edited these chapters and have combined them with the ?ve chapters that we have written to produce an integrated whole.

Download or read book Functional Coherence of Molecular Networks in Bioinformatics written by Mehmet Koyutürk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular networks provide descriptions of the organization of various biological processes, including cellular signaling, metabolism, and genetic regulation. Knowledge on molecular networks is commonly used for systems level analysis of biological function; research and method development in this area has grown tremendously in the past few years. This book will provide a detailed review of existing knowledge on the functional characterization of biological networks. In 15 chapters authored by an international group of prolific systems biology and bioinformatics researchers, it will organize, conceptualize, and summarize the existing core of research results and computational methods on understanding biological function from a network perspective.

Book excerpt: We study haplotype reconstruction under the Mendelian law of inheritance and the minimum recombination principleon pedigree data. We prove that the problem of finding a mini-mum-recombinant haplotype configuration (MRHC) is in general NP-hard. This is the first complexity result concerning the problem to our knowledge. An iterative algorithm based on blocks of consecutive resolved marker loci (called block-extension) is proposed. It is very efficient and can be used for large pedigrees with a large number of markers, especially for those data sets requiring few recombinants (or recombination events). A polynomial-time exact algorithm for haplotype reconstruction without recombinants is also presented. This algorithm first identifies all the necessary constraints based on the Mendelian law and the zero recombinant assumption, and represents them using a system of linear equations over the cyclic group Z2. By using a simple method based on Gaussian elimination, we could obtain all possible feasible haplotype configurations. We have tested the block-extension algorithm on simulated data generated on three pedigree structures. The results show that the algorithm performs very well on both multi-allelic and biallelic data, especially when the number of recombinants is small.

Book Synopsis Combinatorial Pattern Matching by : Alberto Apostolico
Download or read book Combinatorial Pattern Matching written by Alberto Apostolico and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-08-02 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers contained in this volume were presented at the 13th Annual S- posium on Combinatorial Pattern Matching, held July 3–5, 2002 at the Hotel Uminonakamichi, in Fukuoka, Japan. They were selected from 37 abstracts s- mitted in response to the call for papers. In addition, there were invited lectures by Shinichi Morishita (University of Tokyo) and Hiroki Arimura (Kyushu U- versity). Combinatorial Pattern Matching (CPM) addresses issues of searching and matching strings and more complicated patterns such as trees, regular expr- sions, graphs, point sets, and arrays, in various formats. The goal is to derive n- trivial combinatorial properties of such structures and to exploit these properties in order to achieve superior performance for the corresponding computational problems. On the other hand, an important goal is to analyze and pinpoint the properties and conditions under which searches cannot be performed e?ciently. Over the past decade a steady ?ow of high-quality research on this subject has changed a sparse set of isolated results into a full-?edged area of algorithmics. This area is continuing to grow even further due to the increasing demand for speed and e?ciency that stems from important applications such as the World Wide Web, computational biology, computer vision, and multimedia systems. These involve requirements for information retrieval in heterogeneous databases, data compression, and pattern recognition. The objective of the annual CPM gathering is to provide an international forum for research in combinatorial p- tern matching and related applications.
Book Synopsis Advances in Databases by : Brian Lings
Download or read book Advances in Databases written by Brian Lings and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-26 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a decade of major technical and theoretical advancements in the area, the scope for exploitation of database technology has never been greater. Neither has the challenge. This volume contains the proceedings of the 17th British National Conference on Databases (BNCOD 2000), held at the University of Exeter in July 2000. In selecting the quality papers presented here, the programme committee was p- ticularly interested in the demands being made on the technology by emerging application areas, including web applications, push technology, multimedia data, and data warehousing. The concern remains the same: satisfaction of user - quirements on quality and performance. However, with increasing demand for timely access to heterogeneous data distributed on an unregulated Internet, new challenges are presented. Our three invited speakers develop the theme for the conference, considering new dimensions concerning user requirements in accessing distributed, hete- geneous information sources. In the ?rst paper presented here, Gio Wiederhold re?ects on the tension between requirements for, on the one hand, precision and relevance and on the other completeness and recall in relating data from heterogeneous resources. In resolving this tension in favour of the former, he maintains that this will fundamentally a?ect future research directions. Sharma Chakravarthy adds another dimension to the requirement on inf- mation, namely timeliness. He shares a vision of just-in-time information de- vered by a push technology based on reactive capabilities. He maintains that this requires a paradigm shift to a user-centric view of information.
