Book excerpt: This volume provides a fascinating account of the natural forces which shaped the Island's landscape from its formation some 500 million years ago to the present nature of the Manx environment and landscape. The story of the island's colonisation by plants and animals sets the scene for the later volumes which deal with the impact of man's arrival. A key element of the volume is an in depth examination of the contemporary landscape, with an appraisal of how the environment has affected man and how man has affected the environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of 24 papers aims to reconsider the nature and significance of the Irish Sea as an area of cultural interaction during the Neolithic period. The traditional character of work across this region has emphasised the existence of prehistoric contact, with sea routes criss-crossing between Ireland, the Isle of Man, Anglesey and the British mainland. A parallel course of investigation, however, has demonstrated that the British and Irish Neolithics were in many ways different, with distinct indigenous patterns of activity and social practices. The recent emphasis on regional studies has further produced evidence for parallel yet different processes of cultural change taking place throughout the British Isles as a whole. This volume brings together some of these regional perspectives and compares them across the Irish Sea area. The authors consider new ways to explain regional patterning in the use of material objects and relate them to past practices and social strategies. Were there practices that were shared across the Irish Sea area linking different styles of monuments and material culture, or were the media intrinsic to the message? The volume is based on papers presented at a conference held at the University of Manchester in 2002.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work for the series »Placenames of the Isle of Man« is undertaken under the auspices of the Manx Place-Name Survey, set up at the University of Mannheim in 1988. The survey falls into two parts: material collected from a) oral, and b) documentary sources. Place-name material, mostly Manx Gaelic, for the first part, was collected on sound-recordings or in phonetic script 1989-1992 from some 200 informants, almost exclusively from the farming community. The second part contains material drawn from documentary sources of 13th-20th century date, but mostly from 17th-19th centuries. This is the final volume in the series »Placenames of the Isle of Man«. Six volumes, based on the Sheadings (districts) of Glenfaba, Michael, Ayre, Garff, Middle and Rushen, are already published. Volume 7 includes the town of Douglas (capital), place-name and field-name addenda, as well as complete indexes of place-name elements, place-names, field-names, and personal names. In addition are the following four articles: »Place-Names and the Physical and Human Geography of the Isle of Man: an Overview« (Peter Darvey), »Pre-Scandinavian Place-Names in the Isle of Man« (George Broderick), »The Scandinavian Element in the Place-Names of the Isle of Man« (Gillian Fellows-Jensen), and »Common Elements in Manx Place-Names« (George Broderick). To complete the volume are 17 parish maps containing the traditional land divisions of treen and quarterland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Isle of Man is a small island off the northwest coast of England in the Irish Sea. Though heavily influenced by nearby England, Ireland, Wales, and Scotland, it possesses a distinct culture all its own that is reflected in everything from its language, Manx, to its independent parliament, the Tynwald, a legacy of Viking rule. A New History of the Isle of Man takes a fascinating, in-depth look at the island's past. The third volume of the series, examining the medieval era, reveals the period to be extraordinarily important in the Isle of Man's development, as the island's proximity to Britain, Ireland, and Scandinavia made it a nexus of differing military, political, economic, and ecclesiastical aims. Such competing interests helped lay the foundations of the current Manx culture, creating a truly unique society similar to many of its neighbors but the same as none.

Book excerpt: Heritage, memory, community archaeology and the politics of the past form the main strands running through the papers in this volume. The authors tackle these subjects from a range of different philosophical perspectives, with many drawing on the experience of recent community, commercial and other projects. Throughout, there is a strong emphasis on both the philosophy of engagement and with its enactment in specific contexts; the essays deal with an interest in the meaning, value and contested nature of the recent past and in the theory and practice of archaeological engagements with that past.

The number of Manx speakers has increased tenfold in the last twenty years, and this linguistic descendant of old Irish now lays claim to its own drama groups, second language seminars, and even its own primary school. The government-sponsored Manx Heritage Foundation and the Manx Gaelic Advisory Council regulate and standardize the official use of Manx and have together commissioned this definitive guide to the language. Practical Manx covers the grammar, spelling, and pronunciation of Manx Gaelic, rendering it accessible to readers of all levels of competence, while an accompanying website provides an opportunity to observe intonation patterns and other features of this remarkable language.
