Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tristan da Cunha is both a remote group of volcanic islands in the south Atlantic Ocean and the main island of that group. It is the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world, lying approximately 1,511 miles (2,432 km) off the coast of Cape Town in South Africa, 1,343 miles (2,161 km) from Saint Helena and 2,166 miles (3,486 km) off the coast from the Falkland Islands. The territory consists of the main island, Tristan da Cunha, which has a diameter of roughly 11 km (6.8 mi) and an area of 98 sq km (38 sq mi), the smaller, uninhabited Nightingale Islands, and the wildlife reserves of Inaccessible Island and Gough Island. As of October 2018, the main island has 250 permanent inhabitants who all carry British Overseas Territories citizenship. The other islands are uninhabited, except for the personnel of a weather station on Gough Island. Tristan da Cunha is part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha. This includes Saint Helena and also near-equatorial Ascension Island, which lies some 1,741 miles (2,802 km) to the north of Tristan. There is no airstrip of any kind on the main island, meaning that the only way of travelling in and out of Tristan is by boat, a six-day trip from South Africa. Angry Island: The Story of Tristan da Cunha (1506-1963) by Margaret Mackay was first published in 1963, the year the Tristanians returned to their island after its volcano erupted in 1961 and forced the evacuation of the entire population to England. As the most isolated inhabited island on Earth, the Tristanians have had to adapt and develop innovative ways in order to survive, and in this book, Mrs. Mackay tells a very detailed history of Tristan da Cunha since its discovery over five hundred years ago, sharing many shipwreck tales and early yet failed attempts to settle the island. A gripping read!

LONDON 1812: For forty years Britain has dreamed of the Pacific island of Tahiti, a dark paradise of bloody cults and beautiful natives. Now, decades after the first voyage of Captain Cook, a new ship returns to London, crammed with botanical specimens and, it seems, the mysteries of Tahiti. When, days after the Solander's arrival, some of its crew are found dead and their sea-chests ransacked - their throats slashed, faces frozen into terrible smiles - John Harriott, magistrate of the Thames river police, puts constable Charles Horton in charge of the investigation. But what connects the crewmen's dying dreams with the ambitions of the ship's principal backer, Sir Joseph Banks of the Royal Society? And how can Britain's new science possibly explain the strangeness of Tahiti's floral riches now growing at Kew? Horton must employ his singular methods to uncover a chain of conspiracy stretching all the way back to the foot of the great dead volcano Tahiti Nui, beneath the hungry eyes of ancient gods. 'I loved it! Very stylish, very ingenious and very well-written' Joanne Harris 'Shepherd adroitly blurs fact and fiction with a hint of the fantastic, creating his own superior blend of historical crime fiction' Financial Times 'Georgian London is vividly brought to life … A gutsy, involving yarn' Guardian

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A personal and cultural mediation, Philip D. Beidler’s The Island Called Paradise explores the fascinating ways Cuban history and culture have permeated North American consciousness, and vice versa. In The Island Called Paradise, Philip D. Beidler shares his personal discovery of the vast, rich, and astonishing history of the island of Cuba and the interrelatedness of Cuba and the US. Cuba first entered Beidler’s consciousness in the early 1960s when he watched with mesmerized anxiety the televised reports of the Cuban missile crisis, a conflict that reduced a multifaceted, centuries-old history between North America and Cuba to the stark duotones of Cold War politics. Fifty years later, when Beidler traveled to the US’s island neighbor, he found a Cuba unlike the nation portrayed in truculent political rhetoric or in the easy preconceptions of US popular culture. Instead he found an entrancing people and landscape with deep historical connections to the US and a dazzling culture that overwhelmed his creative spirit. In twelve original essays, Beidler reintroduces to English-speaking readers many of the central figures, both real and literary, of Cuban and Cuban-American history. Meet Cecilia Valdés, the young mixed-race heroine of a 1839 novel that takes readers to the poor streets and sumptuous salons of Spanish colonial Cuba, and Narciso López, a real-life Venezuelan adventurer and filibustero who attempted to foment a Cuban uprising against Spain. Both would have been familiar figures to nineteenth-century Americans. Beidler also visits the twentieth-century lives of “the two Ernestos” (Ernest Hemingway and Che Guevara), and the pop-culture Cuban icon Ricky Ricardo. A country not with one history but multiple layers of history, Cuba becomes a fertile island for Beidler’s exploration. Art, he argues, perpetually crosses walls erected by politics, history, and nationality. At its core, The Island Called Paradise renews and refreshes our knowledge of an older Atlantic world even as we begin to envision a future in which the old bonds between our nations may be restored.

Book excerpt: A sequel to his first book, Archie Stanley’s Journeys II offers alternative family migrations that parallel the DNA-based migrations described in Journeys. These alternative migrations branch off from the main family migration pathway from Africa to North America, and could account for many relatively recent archeological discoveries that seem to be in unexpected places, given the extremely accurate DNA Traces documented in the Genome Project of the National Geographic Magazine of human migrations. Crisscrossing the earth, these alternative migrations travelled varied directions and some met in unexpected and remote places. Fictional family members intermingled and exchanged stories of experiences with fictional natives over virtually the entire globe. Survival was the paramount objective across many generations of family members as they journeyed over millennia to faraway corners of our planet. Stories and discussions among the characters in Journeys II offer new theories of gravity, earth magnetic and electro forces, structured space energy grid, dating of ancient monuments, purpose of the Great Pyramid, age of the Great Sphinx, and possible sources and reasons for evidence that exists before our eyes all across the world. Based upon this worldwide evidence an exciting alternative pre-ancient history scenario is offered whose cultures exerted global influence and was based on two continents that no longer exist; rather, they were submerged 12,500 years ago in the areas of today’s two major oceans, the Atlantic and Pacific. These massive changes in our planet earth, were a result of incredible cosmic induced forces 12,500 years ago that virtually peppered our planet with near light speed particles and large projectiles that collided with or nearly collided with earth. The result was a near complete melting of the massive icecap that covered most of the northern hemisphere with subsequent huge tidal waves and massive flooding of continents, extinction of most of the large species of animals all across the earth, and near complete destruction of earth’s landscape, and complete destruction and submergence of the two former Atlantic and Pacific continents described in the previous paragraph. Brought to life pictorially by Google Earth maps, sketches, and custom full color illustrations, the stories take the reader’s emotions on several wild journeys that provoke deep thought on how evidence, including massive monuments, myths, chants, stories, carvings, religions, and unexplained damage of the earth and huge deposits of the bones of extinct animals all over the world came to be. It is recent anomalous archeologic discoveries all across the earth that drive the need for rewriting the history of the earth. The stories and ideas presented in Journeys II are in part intended to assist in bringing worldwide evidence to the reader’s attention and encourage new ideas of who created the evidence and what the evidence means.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can your employer require you to travel to India for a hip replacement as a condition of insurance coverage? If injury results, can you sue the doctor, hospital or insurer for medical malpractice in the country where you live? Can a country prohibit its citizens from helping a relative travel to Switzerland for assisted suicide? What about travel for abortion? In Patients with Passports, I. Glenn Cohen tackles these important questions, and provides the first comprehensive legal and ethical analysis of medical tourism. Medical tourism is a growing multi-billion dollar industry involving millions of patients who travel abroad each year to get health care. Some seek legitimate services like hip replacements and travel to avoid queues, save money, or because their insurer has given them an incentive to do so. Others seek to circumvent prohibitions on accessing services at home and go abroad to receive abortions, assisted suicide, commercial surrogacy, or experimental stem cell treatments. In this book, author I. Glenn Cohen focuses on patients traveling for cardiac bypass and other legal services to places like India, Thailand, and Mexico, and analyzes issues of quality of care, disease transmission, liability, private and public health insurance, and the effects of this trade on foreign health care systems. He goes on to examine medical tourism for services illegal in the patient's home country, such as organ purchase, abortion, assisted suicide, fertility services, and experimental stem cell treatments. Here, Cohen examines issues such as extraterritorial criminalization, exploitation, immigration, and the protection of children. Through compelling narratives, expert data, and industry explanations Patients with Passports enables the reader to connect with the most prevalent legal and ethical issues facing medical tourism today.
