Dolphins flash in the blue waters around it, sea otter play in the vast kep beds, and sea elephants loll on the stony beaches. Here, in the early 1800s, according to history, an Indian girl spent eighteen years alone, and this beautifully written novel is her story. It is a romantic adventure filled with drama and heartache, for not only was mere subsistence on so desolate a spot a near miracle, but Karana had to contend with the ferocious pack of wild dogs that had killed her younger brother, constantly guard against the Aleutian sea otter hunters, and maintain a precarious food supply. More than this, it is an adventure of the spirit that will haunt the reader long after the book has been put down. Karana's quiet courage, her Indian self-reliance and acceptance of fate, transform what to many would have been a devastating ordeal into an uplifting experience. From loneliness and terror come strength and serenity in this Newbery Medal-winning classic.

Book excerpt: Everyone loves a good fairy tale and Island Girl: A Triumph of the Spirit, from author Norma Joyce Dougherty, fits the bill. Norma shares how in 1970, God led her, a poor, young farm girl from Prince Edward Island, Canada to live out a real-life fairy tale on the world stage. “I became a world traveler and overnight success as Miss Dominion of Canada and contestant in the Miss World, Miss Universe, Queen of the Pacific, and semi-finalist in Miss International. She found fame and fortune,” but adds, “I lost my home, my self, and a sense of belonging. It took many years to find ‘me’ again.” Women of every age will relate with her identity crisis—a crisis that is all too common in this post-modern era due to the bombardment of direct marketing campaigns designed to focus our goals on looking, acting, and being someone we're not. Norma Joyce recounts her story in a lively “fairy-tale” theme as she shares the long journey from a world where lies and deception prevail to one where the truth of Jesus Christ is her power source, her light, radiance, beauty, peace, joy and her triumph.

Book excerpt: The life story of Mary Elizabeth LeBlanc in Jackie Muise's Island Girl is compelling and moving, not because she was highly unusual, but because she experienced, suffered, survived, and triumphed over challenges commonly faced by ordinary people during her era. She did so with inspiring fortitude and grace. Orphaned at an early age on PEI, she lives first with lightkeepers at Souris East Lighthouse, then with a St. Georges farming couple, Dolph and Jeannette Gallant, who become her beloved lifelong parents. With wartime, Mary is transplanted to Nova Scotia, where Dolph works in the Pictou shipyards building cargo ships, and where she marries Pictou native Fred Leblanc, who becomes a soldier. Afflicted and critically ill with tuberculosis, Mary dwells at length and gives birth in the Kentville sanitorium. Prevailing, she devotes herself to the roles, sometimes draining, often fulfilling, of a military wife and mother. During postings in Germany and New Brunswick, she copes with and finally confronts her husband's alcoholism, while nurturing children through their struggles and victories. When we arrive at the end of Mary's long life and story, we deeply admire and miss her as if she were our own cherished and extraordinary relative. We agree with the Chronicles of Narnia author C.S. Lewis that "There are no ordinary people."

Book excerpt: Black & White Edition -- In the 1670s, a Dutch settler named Claudius van Beverhoudt arrived on St. Thomas, Danish West Indies. He married a woman named Elizabeth deWindt and made St. Thomas his home. Arnold van Beverhoudt, Jr. is a direct 8th generation descendant of Claudius and Elizabeth. His paternal grandparents, Ernest and Elisa, were living on St. Thomas in 1917 when the Danish West Indies became the U.S. Virgin Islands. They eventually moved to Venezuela, but Arnold's father remained on St. Thomas, where he became an auto repairman and raised his family. This book presents - in words and photos - Arnold's memories of life growing up and eventually meeting his "Island Girl" Helena on the tiny Caribbean island that its residents affectionately call "the Rock." It's a story that's been over 340 years in the making.

Book excerpt: I am not a writer but I am a story teller with a tale to tell. This novel is based, to some extent, on things that happened during my years on and around Sullivan s Island, South Carolina. This story is about a mother, her husband and three children who lived on Sullivan s island near Fort Moultrie during World War II and several decades after the war. It includes living through hurricanes, eating what the ocean had to offer, enjoying the beach and the friends and relatives who affected their lives. In the middle of all this is another story.....a love story between the mother and a soldier, whom she introduces to her family, even to her husband as a friend. The surprise ending brings to the reader an interesting conclusion. Remember this is not a true story but one that could have happened. I was born on Sullivan s Island over 80 years ago. I grew up there and lived through most of the events from which my imagination took over and built this story. Since being married almost 60 years to my husband Bill, the love of my life, we have traveled to all fi fty states, parts of Europe, South America, Canada and cruised all over the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. In addition to our traveling we enjoy duplicate bridge, reading, senior activities at our church and writing. Writing has always been my passion but this is my fi rst attempt at writing a novel. I just love what I ve done and have another in the back of my mind. We have three daughters and seven grandchildren and currently live in the clay hills of Chapin, South Carolina but I just cannot get the beach sand from between my toes.

But with the help of her family and friends, and their memories—joyous, fantastical, heartbreaking, and frightening—Lola's imagination takes her on an extraordinary journey back to The Island. As she draws closer to the heart of her family's story, Lola comes to understand the truth of her abuela's words: “Just because you don't remember a place doesn't mean it's not in you.” Gloriously illustrated and lyrically written, Islandborn is a celebration of creativity, diversity, and our imagination's boundless ability to connect us—to our families, to our past and to ourselves.

I like to imagine you some days when I look out the window across the harbour, all those miles of sea and land between us. But, sister, we are always connected. When young nurse Emer loses her beloved sister, she is haunted by grief and desperate to escape her memories. Taking a job in Vinalhaven, a rocky outpost in the wild Atlantic, feels like the refuge she so badly needs. Her patient, Susannah, has lived in isolation for many years, since the tragic death of her sister Kate caused her to withdraw from island life. However, when Emer discovers a bundle of letters in a rainbow quilt in her bedroom and shares the story of her own loss, Susannah opens up. She begins to tell the story of Kate's brutal and secret past, and her marriage to a man with a heart as cold as the ocean. But when Emer starts asking locals about Kate, the island air sizzles with hostility. There are people who would rather that Susannah kept quiet, who have no qualms about threatening Emer. But despite the warnings to stay away, Emer is determined to find out what really happened the night Kate died - and the final secret that is keeping Susannah a prisoner to the past. An unputdownable and unforgettable story of impossible choices and two sisters who would do anything for one another. Set on a bewitching sea-scented island, The Island Girls will burrow into your heart. Perfect for fans of Lisa Wingate, Anita Shreve and The Light Between Oceans. What everyone's saying about The Island Girls: 'This book was so good. I didn't want to put it down! The characters were well rounded, and the storyline sucked you into it and made you feel like you were really there. The author did a great job telling this story.' Goodreads Reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 'Highly enjoyed this wonderful, warm and inviting read, good story line, excellent characters - makes a great book.' Goodreads Reviewer 'A compelling story about the love between sisters... hard to put down from beginning to end.' Goodreads Reviewer 'I am a sucker for stories that take place on just about any coast. Add in some family drama and I am hooked. This novel did not disappoint me. There are many story lines all going on at once, including differing time periods, points of view, and locations, yet I never got lost. ... As each layer of each story is removed, I felt closer to the characters, and the locale is at times a character by itself. This story is a good roadmap of how families can drive us crazy while drawing us close at the same time.' Spinning Cracked Plates 'This was my first book from this author, and I intend to read more.' Goodreads Reviewer Readers are gripped by Noelle Harrison's writing: 'A life-affirming read with wonderful characters and beautiful writing. It is a compelling and engaging story that grips you from the start.' Goodreads Reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
