Book excerpt: "The Qur'an has been interpreted by many scholars (Muslims and non-Muslims) for centuries, and many interpretive works presently in circulation are more or less similar in tone and contents. The "Essential Message of Islam," however, is a challenging book that stands apart from the traditional interpretive works. Evolved primarily by a computer-aided scrutiny of the Qur'anic text, the book provides an invaluable source that offers eye-opening and enlightening insights to the Muslims' sacred Text, without any personal, sectarian, cultural or gender influences. The book removes any misconception about Muslim-Christian-Jewish relationships, presenting Islam as a 'Universal Religion' that promotes a peaceful coexistence of people of all faiths. A must read book for all!" -- Publisher description.

Book excerpt: In much of the Muslim world, religion is the central foundation upon which family, community, morality, and identity are built. The inextricable embedment of religion in Muslim culture has forced a new generation of non-believing Muslims to face the heavy costs of abandoning their parents’ religion: disowned by their families, marginalized from their communities, imprisoned, or even sentenced to death by their governments. Struggling to reconcile the Muslim society he was living in as a scientist and physician and the religion he was being raised in, Ali A. Rizvi eventually loses his faith. Discovering that he is not alone, he moves to North America and promises to use his new freedom of speech to represent the voices that are usually quashed before reaching the mainstream media—the Atheist Muslim. In The Atheist Muslim, we follow Rizvi as he finds himself caught between two narrative voices he cannot relate to: extreme Islam and anti-Muslim bigotry in a post-9/11 world. The Atheist Muslim recounts the journey that allows Rizvi to criticize Islam—as one should be able to criticize any set of ideas—without demonizing his entire people. Emotionally and intellectually compelling, his personal story outlines the challenges of modern Islam and the factors that could help lead it toward a substantive, progressive reformation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islam, the religion of total submission to God, is the belief of more than one fifth of all human beings and is the second largest religion in the world. Despite its large number of followers, little was known about it in America until after the tragic event of September 11, 2001. Unfortunately, the media portrayed Islam negatively after September 11th and distorted its true nature. Hence, some people do not want to hear anything about Islam while many others began to ask many questions about it. An Insider's Guide to Islam is a practical guide that explains Islam as understood and practiced by Muslims of diverse background. To Muslims, Islam is a way of life and a religion of peace which brings tranquility and harmony to their lives. Islam is a rich culture and a unique tradition which must be understood on its own merits. The author brings insight into what Islam means, how it is practiced and its relationship with other religions. He also analyzes the concept of Jihad, the role of women in Islam and the values that Islam cherishes. The development of Islam in America and the roles that Muslims play in the United States are also elaborated upon in this volume.

Book excerpt: With everything going on around us, it is difficult to focus on what truly matters. We are often overwhelmed in our lives; so focused on the details that we forget the big picture. It is important to take a step back and take a look at the master plan. There is more to life than the little annoyances, the daily grind, and even the temporary moments of happiness we may experience. This book is divided into six parts. The intention of each part is to help us take a step back and refocus our energy and attention on a Muslim's true-life purpose, thus helping us impalement our Islamic faith accurately. The first part is, "The Purpose of Life." When we do things, we have to do them with right intention. We must fully understand why we are here and what Allah SWT wants from us. Understanding the purpose of life helps us to have balanced lives and to have patience towards the less desirable moments in our lives, keeping in mind our priorities and duties assigned to us by Allah SWT. The Second part is, "Islamic Principles." We are here to navigate life, but as any wayfarer on a journey knows, one must have a compass to know which direction to go. This is where Islam comes in. In Islam we find a simple and universal religion. If we impalement the simple principles of Islam and the example of our Prophet Muhammad PBUH and fulfill our roles as Muslims than our presence on this earth becomes momentous. Islam becomes a blessing for us and for those around us.The third part is, "Islamic Way of Life." Surely navigating this life is difficult but Allah SWT has blessed us in giving us direction. The codes that Allah SWT has given us through his messenger Muhammad PBUH, the ways he asks us to behave, the dangers he asks us to keep away from are all for our own benefit. They are given to us in order to help us navigate through this life so that we can arrive soundly at our final destination, Jannah Insha'Allah. The fourth part is, "Our Journey Together." On this journey called life we must remember that we are not islands. We need each other, as by nature we are social beings. In fact, it is why isolation is considered a form of torture. As we go on life's journey we have companions that are a part of the sweetness of this life. With this great blessing from Allah SWT comes great responsibility towards these companions. The fifth part is, "Our Hereafter." Allah SWT has blessed us with being able to see parts of the future as He as described them to us. He has warned us of what is to come so that we can have a stronger motivation now to do better. This section is meant as a motivation so that we can remember that our eternal abode is what deserves the most of our attention. Finally, the sixth part is, "Timeless Stories of Inspiration." There are people that have gone through this journey of life before us. We can learn from their stories and we can use the stories as a source of inspiration. It is the intention that these sections help us understand that there is a bigger picture in life. And what is by far the most beautiful thing of all is that this master plan of our life is created by the Most Generous, the Most Merciful, and the All-Knowing Allah SWT. I don't claim that all ideas and thoughts in this book belong to me. It is the accumulation of knowledge and thoughts of numerous Muslim scholars for several generations. I must give credits to Imam Mohammed Al-Ghazali of Egypt, Sheikh Al-Nabulsi, Imam Al-Muhassibi, Dr. Amr Khalid, Dr. Al-Marzouki and Dr. Mustafa Mahmoud. Most of these thoughts and inspirations originally come from two sources, The Quran and the Sunnah. Any good that comes from this book is from Him and any errors are my own.

Book excerpt: In recent months, much attention has been paid to Islam and the greater Muslim world. Some analysis has been openly hostile, while even more has been overly simplistic. Islam in Context goes behind the recent crisis to discuss the history of Islam, describe its basic structure and beliefs, explore the current division between Muslim moderates and extremists, and suggest a way forward. Authors Peter G. Riddell and Peter Cotterell draw from sources such as the Qur'an, early Christian chronicles of the Crusades, and contemporary Muslim and non-Muslim writings. They move beyond the stereotypes of Muhammad-both idealized and negative-and argue against the myth that relatively recent events in the Middle East are the only cause for the clash between Islam and the West. Riddell and Cotterell ask the non-Muslim world to attempt to understand Islam from the perspective of Muslims and to acknowledge past mistakes. At the same time, they challenge the Muslim world by suggesting that Islam stands today at a vital crossroads and only Muslims can forge the way forward. Islam in Context will appeal to all those who are interested in an alternative to the easily packaged descriptions of the relationship between Islam and the West.

Book excerpt: Progress in biomedical science has called for an international discussion of the medical, ethical, and legal problems that confront physicians, medical researchers, infertile couples, pregnant women, and parents of premature or disabled infants. In addition, the unprecedented technological developments in obstetrical, perinatal, and neonatal medicine in recent years have indicated a need for an international forum for interdisciplinary dialogue regarding the definition of early human life, the neurological development of early human life, the value of early human life, the obligations for its protection and prolongation, and the limits to these obligations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most important innovators of the century, Tariq Ramadan is a leading Muslim scholar, with a large following especially among young European and American Muslims. Now, in his first book written for a wide audience, he offers a marvelous biography of the Prophet Muhammad, one that highlights the spiritual and ethical teachings of one of the most influential figures in human history. In the Footsteps of the Prophet is a fresh and perceptive look at Muhammad, capturing a life that was often eventful, gripping, and highly charged. Ramadan provides both an intimate portrait of a man who was shy, kind, but determined, as well as a dramatic chronicle of a leader who launched a great religion and inspired a vast empire. More important, Ramadan presents the main events of the Prophet's life in a way that highlights his spiritual and ethical teachings. The book underscores the significance of the Prophet's example for some of today's most controversial issues, such as the treatment of the poor, the role of women, Islamic criminal punishments, war, racism, and relations with other religions. Selecting those facts and stories from which we can draw a profound and vivid spiritual picture, the author asks how can the Prophet's life remain -- or become again -- an example, a model, and an inspiration? And how can Muslims move from formalism -- a fixation on ritual -- toward a committed spiritual and social presence? In this thoughtful and engaging biography, Ramadan offers Muslims a new understanding of Muhammad's life and he introduces non-Muslims not just to the story of the Prophet, but to the spiritual and ethical riches of Islam.
