Book excerpt: Long march of Islam is a reality. The rising crescendo of Jihadi warriors footfalls can be heard across India and many other countries. Religion-based faultline conflicts are growing globally. These are tourbo driven by the exceptionally high rise in Muslims population, both in Islamic and non-Islamic countries. This book is about tomorrow and the day after - an alert about mankind's future imperfect! By 2025 Muslims will comprise 30 percent of the world population. That could destabilize many countries and regions because Islam is a conquest oriented religion. Indian sub-continent is likely to be one of the conflict zones. As envisioned by Pakistan's idealogue, Allama Iqbal, the Islamists hope to restore the lost grandeur of Islam on the strength of sharply rising numbers and the time-tested strategy of Jihad. The author has analysed Pakistan's role in the long march of Islam and identified the regions likely to be worst affected.

Book excerpt: Islamist thinkers used to debate the doctrine of the caliphate of man, which holds that God is sovereign but has appointed the multitude of believers as His vicegerent. Andrew March argues that the doctrine underpins a democratic vision of popular rule over governments and clerics. But is this an ideal regime destined to survive only in theory?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the West, we tend to think of Islamic law as an arcane and rigid legal system, bound by formulaic texts yet suffused by unfettered discretion. While judges may indeed refer to passages in the classical texts or have recourse to their own orientations, images of binding doctrine and unbounded choice do not reflect the full reality of the Islamic law in its everyday practice. Whether in the Arabic-speaking world, the Muslim portions of South and Southeast Asia, or the countries to which many Muslims have migrated, Islamic law works is readily misunderstood if the local cultures in which it is embedded are not taken into account. With Islam and the Rule of Justice, Lawrence Rosen analyzes a number of these misperceptions. Drawing on specific cases, he explores the application of Islamic law to the treatment of women (who win most of their cases), the relations between Muslims and Jews (which frequently involve close personal and financial ties), and the structure of widespread corruption (which played a key role in prompting the Arab Spring). From these case studie the role of informal mechanisms in the resolution of local disputes. The author also provides a close reading of the trial of Zacarias Moussaoui, who was charged in an American court with helping to carry out the 9/11 attacks, using insights into how Islamic justice works to explain the defendant’s actions during the trial. The book closes with an examination of how Islamic cultural concepts may come to bear on the constitutional structure and legal reforms many Muslim countries have been undertaking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization have provoked global controversy and ethical debate. This book provides a groundbreaking investigation into those debates in the Islamic Middle East, simultaneously documenting changing ideas of kinship and the evolving role of religious authority in the region through a combination of in-depth field research in Lebanon and an exhaustive survey of the Islamic legal literature. Lebanon, home to both Sunni and Shiite Muslim communities, provides a valuable site through which to explore the overall dynamism and diversity of global Islamic debate. As this book shows, Muslim perspectives focus on the moral propriety of such controversial procedures as the use of donor sperm and eggs as well as surrogacy arrangements, which are allowed by some authorities using surprising and innovative legal arguments. These arguments challenge common stereotypes of the rigidity and conservatism of Islamic law and compel us to question conventional contrasts between ‘liberal’ and Islamic notions of moral freedom, as well as the epistemological assumptions of anthropology’s own ‘new kinship studies’. This book will be essential reading for anyone interested in contemporary Islam and the impact of reproductive technology on the global social imaginary.

Book excerpt: Discussing the Million Man March of October 16, 1995 as a turning point in the history of African American protest, this volume offers five interpretive contexts to demarcate its cultural location: The March is analyzed as a struggle within the African American political establishment (1), as an attempt at unified black action against a new politics of white resentment (2), and as the Nation of Islam's (NOI) most visible self-dramatization since its founding in the 1930s (3). Relying on these themes, a rhetorical analysis of Louis Farrakhan's speech at the March uncovers the NOI's uneasy yet intimate relationship with the rituals of American civil religion (4). Finally, Con/Tradition addresses Farrakhan's influence on black HipHop culture and academic Afrocentrism (5).

Book excerpt: Arabian armies, under the banner of Islam, began to sweep through Syria and Mesopotamia in 633. Within a decade, they had conquered Persia and Egypt and taken the holy city of Jerusalem. In 674, they were poised at the gates of Constantinople. By the early 800s, Islam's banners fluttered in the wind from Spain in the west to India in the east. This splendidly illustrated book tells of the great civilizations in Europe and Asia that were faced with this rapid expansion of Islam. Chapters: warriors and warlords; the prophet's quest; the structures of Islam; the changing face of Europe; empire building in the east; inscribing the sacred word; the Kingdom of the Rising Sun; and Shomu's eclectic treasures.
