Book excerpt: Excerpt from Islam and Christianity in India and the Far East The Papers published in this volume prepared specially for the Students' Lecture Course on Missions at the Princeton Theological Seminary sum up the results of many years of study in connection with missionary work in India. The object has not been so much to present what is most interesting in connection with the cause of missions to Mohammedans as to set forth the facts and conditions under which on the one hand, Islam has been propagated in India and the countries farther east and on the other Christianity has established its missions for the evangelisation of all non Christians, Moslems included. In the accomplishment of this purpose I have endeavoured to give a brief account of the religion of Islam, in order to show the character and quality of the work to be done in order to evangelise its votaries. Two chapters are then devoted to an account ef the propagation of Islam in India and the Far East. One of these emphasises the services of the proselyting sword. The other illustrates the power which Islam has exerted along the line of preaching. Taken together, these chapters show that in Islam, preaching and teaching normally follow upon the heels of the invading Moslem army, and on the other hand that the preaching of Islam invariably calls in the aid of the secular power. Again, the inquirer whose historical perspective is undisturbed by ecclesiastical considerations, will approach the subject with somewhat different interests. He will expect the comparison to provide him with a clear View of the influence which Christianity has exerted upon other religions or has itself received from them: or he may hope by comparing the general develop ment of special religious systems to gain a clearer insight into the growth of Christian ity. Hence the object of such comparisons is to trace the course of analogous develop ments and the interaction of influence and so to increase the knowledge of religion in general or of our own religion in particular. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conversion of India: From Pantænus to the Present Time, A. D. 193-1893 The Reformed Churches Of Europe and America, after a critical pause for two centuries more, during which they were unconsciously preparing the Word Of God for the world-races, and were Opening up new continents and islands to its sway, entered a century ago on the third spiritual revolution - the conversion Of the East, of India and Southern Asia, to Christ. The conversion of Africa and the islands may be regarded as the work Of the missionary century on which we are just entering. So far as Africa is under Mohammedan influence, the evangel ising Of that continent is really a part of the greater prob lem Of Asia. Following up the two revolutions of the eighteen Christian centuries, the third, the conversion of India in the widest sense of that word, is the first and greatest mission to which Western Christendom is called. The fitful and mistaken attempts of the Early Church, the long neglect or cruel intolerance that succeeded these up to a century ago, have made Brahmanism, with its odi spring, and Islam apparently more powerful enemies of Christ than even the classical paganism of Hellas and Imperial Rome. Hinduism and Islam once fairly grappled with, the millions of China and Japan, Of Africa and Oceania, must follow willing captives in the triumphal train of the Christ. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Islam and Christianity, or the Quran and the Bible: A Letter to a Muslim Friend I would remind you also of our agreement that the books which we accept as of Divine origin and authority, the Scriptures of the Old and New Testa ments - to which you add the Quran - should fur nish the tribunal to which we appeal and the decisive citations which we make. This is necessary, if we are to be upon equal terms, for, .as you are aware, Protestant Christians reject tradition as a ground of faith and practice, resting on the Scriptures alone as the infallible Word of God. I can, therefore, make no use of Christian tradition, believing it to be untrustworthy as most liable to be vitiated and corrupted by transmission through fallible mortals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book, renowned religion scholar Philip Jenkins offers a lost history, revealing that, for centuries, Christianity's center was actually in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, with significant communities extending as far as China. The Lost History of Christianity unveils a vast and forgotten network of the world's largest and most influential Christian churches that existed to the east of the Roman Empire. These churches and their leaders ruled the Middle East for centuries and became the chief administrators and academics in the new Muslim empire. The author recounts the shocking history of how these churches—those that had the closest link to Jesus and the early church—died. Jenkins takes a stand against current scholars who assert that variant, alternative Christianities disappeared in the fourth and fifth centuries on the heels of a newly formed hierarchy under Constantine, intent on crushing unorthodox views. In reality, Jenkins says, the largest churches in the world were the “heretics” who lost the orthodoxy battles. These so-called heretics were in fact the most influential Christian groups throughout Asia, and their influence lasted an additional one thousand years beyond their supposed demise. Jenkins offers a new lens through which to view our world today, including the current conflicts in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. Without this lost history, we lack an important element for understanding our collective religious past. By understanding the forgotten catastrophe that befell Christianity, we can appreciate the surprising new births that are occurring in our own time, once again making Christianity a true world religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The so-called 'Nestorian' Church (officially known as the Apostolic Assyrian Church of the East, with its See in Baghdad) was one of the most significant Christian communities to develop east of the Roman Empire. In its heyday the Church had 8 million adherents and stretched from the Mediterranean to China. Christoph Baumer is one of the very few Westerners to have visited many of the most important Assyrian sites and has written the only comprehensive history of the Church, which now fights for survival in its country of origin, Iraq, and is almost forgotten in the West. He narrates its rich and colorful trajectory, from its apostolic beginnings to the present day, and discusses the Church's theology, christology, and uniquely vigorous spirituality. He analyzes the Church's turbulent relationship with other Christian chuches and its dialogue with neighboring world religions such as Zoroastrianism, Manichaeism, Islam, Buddhism, and Taoism. Richly illustrated with maps and over 150 full-color photographs, the book will be essential reading for those interested in a fascinating, but neglected Christian community which has profoundly shaped the history of civilization in both East and West.
